The Author having received various letters from well-wishers to his work, in which, amongst much that is complimentary and gratifying, he finds complaints of his having too frequently made use of Spanish and other words, unintelligible to the generality of his readers, he has in the present edition done his best to remedy that inconvenience by giving, in most instances, the English equivalents; some few foreign terms and expressions, however, have been retained, but only where the force and spirit of particular passages would have been endangered by their omission.
