Appendix 3 - Chapels in 1842
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 03 August 2023
Summary
Samuel Lewis published topographical dictionaries (or gazetteers) for England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the 1840s which are of considerable value for local historians. Most compilers of similar works, usually for an individual county, omitted any mention of dissenting chapels and meeting houses. Lewis, however, tried to include all such buildings, but was not always successful. The information given here is taken from the fifth edition of his Topographical Dictionary of England (London, 1842). ‘Place of worship’ must be assumed for each denomination mentioned, unless some other term is given. Cottages and rooms used for religious worship are not mentioned.
