Summary

Patients with CV disease should be followed closely by a cardiologist prior to pregnancy to determine a safe plan. This plan may include lifestyle or medication modifications, need for cardiac surgery prior or concomitant with delivery, or a plan to avoid pregnancy altogether. Medical decision-making for a woman with CV disease of childbearing age involves a multidisciplinary team, including an obstetrician, maternal–fetal medicine specialist, cardiologist, cardiothoracic and/or obstetric anesthesiologist, and/or cardiac surgeon, together with the patient.
