  • Although remembered today chiefly for his archaeological discoveries in Crete, Sir Arthur John Evans (1851–1941) became Britain's leading expert on Balkan affairs after publishing his account of travelling through Bosnia in 1875 (also reissued in this series). In 1877 he returned to the region as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian, reporting on the continuing insurrection against Ottoman rule. Evans is at pains to point out that he does not regard himself as a war correspondent, but wishes to introduce 'in a tolerably peaceful fashion the insurgents and their little mountain territory to the English public'. Published in 1878, these letters offer historical, social and religious background to the insurrection. In so doing, they provide a valuable insight into the genesis of more recent conflicts in a region that has always been a melting pot of peoples and cultures.

  • This is the fourth volume in a seven-volume collection - published in nine parts between 1864 and 1890 - comprising Venetian and other northern Italian state papers relating to England. Translator and editor Rawdon Lubbock Brown (1806–83) lived for many years in Venice, had unrivalled access to the Venetian archives and travelled widely to find documents in other Italian libraries and archives. He had previously published two volumes of Sebastian Giustinian's dispatches to Venice from Henry VIII's court (also reissued in this series). This fourth volume contains documents from the years 1527–33, including the important diaries of Marin Sanuto, which chronicle the momentous period when Henry was seeking a divorce from Catherine of Aragon and when Cardinal Wolsey's failure to have the marriage annulled led to his downfall. The editor's preface puts the various documents into historical context, and an appendix of miscellaneous items is also included.

  • At the close of the Napoleonic Wars, Malta officially became part of the British Empire in 1814. As the British presence there increased, so too did public interest in the island's history, particularly the military religious order of the Knights Hospitaller. In 1858, the army officer Whitworth Porter (1827–92) published this two-volume work, tracing the fortunes of the order since its establishment following the First Crusade. Incorporating details of the knights' social habits and customs into his narrative, Porter also provides supplementary material such as royal and papal documents in translation. Volume 1 focuses on the centuries of warfare between the order and the forces of Islam, from its beginnings in the Holy Land through to the second siege of Rhodes in 1522, when the knights were outnumbered and ultimately defeated by the attacking Ottoman armies.

  • A lieutenant in the Royal Navy who served in South America, the Crimea and China, Charles Stuart Forbes (1829–76) was one of the many Englishmen who volunteered to support Giuseppe Garibaldi during the Risorgimento. Garibaldi (1807–82) was an immensely popular figure in England, often being identified with English heroes of the past. Streets, food and clothing were named in his honour, while Queen Victoria commented that he was 'honest, disinterested and brave'. Published in 1861, Forbes' work tells, mostly through letters, of the progress of the last territorial conquest before the creation of the Kingdom of Italy. From Forbes we learn something of the messianic character attributed to Garibaldi: 'I have many times been told, in all sincerity by the peasants, that he is the brother of the Redeemer.' This remains a valuable first-hand account of some of the most important events in the founding of modern Italy.

  • This is the last volume in a seven-volume collection - published in nine parts between 1864 and 1890 - comprising Venetian and other northern Italian state papers relating to England. Translator and editor Rawdon Lubbock Brown (1806–83) lived for many years in Venice, had unrivalled access to the Venetian archives and travelled widely to find documents in other Italian libraries and archives. After his death, the work was completed by George Cavendish Bentinck (1821–91), who was a trustee of the British Museum and provides a preface to the documents assembled by his predecessor. Brown had previously published two volumes of Sebastian Giustinian's dispatches to Venice from Henry VIII's court (also reissued in this series). This seventh volume documents Venetian relations with England during the period 1558–80, the early part of Elizabeth I's reign. An index and a brief appendix of miscellaneous documents are also included.

  • The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries witnessed a revolution in the eating habits of European households with disposable incomes. Central to the culinary history of the period is the innovative French chef Georges Auguste Escoffier (1846–1935). His cooking methods, combined with a modern approach to managing professional kitchen staff, contributed to the development of a fashionable culture of dining out, notably at London's Savoy and Carlton hotels. Escoffier's influence was such that he was urged to publish his methods and recipes. Reissued here in its English translation of 1907, this textbook on haute cuisine was first published in French in 1903. Beginning with the fundamental elements of cooking, Escoffier gives nearly 3,000 descriptions and recipes, ranging from sauces and marinades to jams and jellies. Intended for the instruction of aspiring chefs, this monumental work remains a core text at cookery schools to this day.

  • As a younger woman, Anna Maria 'Marie' Tussaud (1761–1850) rubbed shoulders with many of the key figures of the French Revolution, sculpting in wax the likes of Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Marat and Robespierre. After moving to Britain, she made her living by exhibiting her sculptures in numerous towns and cities. In 1835 she settled in London and opened her museum, which became one of the city's most popular attractions. Initially reluctant about releasing her memoirs, Madame Tussaud was convinced by her editor Francis Hervé (1781–1850) that her unique position - of seeing first-hand the events and characters that drove the Revolution, while maintaining a generally non-partisan view of them - would make the book of real interest to the public. First published in 1838, it offers evocative eyewitness insights into one of the defining periods in modern European history.

  • Having married and settled in Florence in the 1840s, the poet and translator Theodosia Trollope (1816–65) found herself well placed to chronicle the events which contributed to the unification of Italy. While another Englishwoman in Italy, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, would become better known for her verse, Trollope nevertheless firmly established herself in the liberal and literary circles of Florentine society, allowing her to witness at first hand, and explore in prose, the effects that the Risorgimento was having on those living through it. Vividly capturing the unfolding situation in Tuscany, twenty-seven letters first appeared in The Athenaeum in 1859–60. They were published together in this work of 1861, along with an update on the months that had elapsed since the last letter was written in April 1860. Championing the cause of unification, Trollope's writing helped to generate enthusiasm in Britain for the progress and personalities of the Risorgimento.

  • An accomplished biographer of figures ranging from Talleyrand to Cardinal Newman, Charlotte Blennerhassett (1843–1917) originally published this three-volume study in German. Reissued here is the English translation of 1889 by J. E. Gordon Cumming. Madame de Staël (1766–1817), an intellectual in Paris at the turn of the nineteenth century, was ranked by Auguste Comte as among the 'great men' of the era. A novelist, salonnière, literary and social critic, and follower of Rousseau, she became keenly involved in the opposition to Louis XVI. Volume 1 of Blennerhassett's authoritative study addresses Madame de Staël's life up to the Revolution, examining her ancestry, family and marriage to the Swedish ambassador to France. The volume also covers her views on marriage, slavery, the Rights of Man and the contemporary political turmoil.

  • Sebastian Giustinian (1460–1543) served as the Venetian ambassador to the court of Henry VIII between 1515 and 1519, during which time he sent back frequent and detailed dispatches to the Signory of Venice. In 1515, when Giustinian arrived at the English court, Henry was only twenty-four and described as 'expert in arms, and of great valour, and most excellent in his personal endowments'. In this first of two volumes, Guistinian's letters paint a vivid portrait of a diplomat's life at court, covering treaty negotiations, meetings with Cardinal Wolsey, and the personal qualities of the monarch and his queen. Translator and editor Rawdon Lubbock Brown (1806–83) had an unrivalled knowledge of the Venetian archives: he was the first historian to appreciate the importance of the dispatches sent from London by the Venetian ambassadors. His edition of Giustinian's correspondence provided an entirely new insight into Henry's reign when it was first published in 1854.

In this extensive work, comprising ten separate parts - published in German between 1836 and 1867 - Palacký gives a detailed account of Bohemian history until 1526. It remains an important and ambitious feat of scholarship, still relevant to students of central European history. The second part of Volume 5 (1867) deals with the years 1500–26 and the reigns of Vladislaus II and Ludwig I.
