The study adopted an ex post facto design to investigate background variables as predictors of utilisation of Web 2.0 applications in counsellor education. The population included 28 counsellor educators in the Department of Guidance and Counselling of the sampled university. Background variables and the Web 2.0 Utilisation Questionnaire (BVW2.0UQ) was used to gather data, which were analysed using means, standard deviations and multiple regression analysis. Findings of the study indicated, among others, that the extent of utilisation of Web 2.0 applications in counsellor education was low, and that the joint influence of the background variables on the extent of utilisation of Web 2.0 applications in counsellor education was not statistically significant.

The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of dietary supplemental vitamin D3 (VD3) on P absorption and utilisation as well as its related mechanisms in the small intestine of broilers. A total of 384 1-d-old Arbor Acres male broilers were assigned randomly into four treatments following a completely randomised design with a 2 (dietary non-phytate P (NPP) contents: 0·43 and 0·22 %)×2 (dietary VD3 supplemental levels: 0 and 87·5 μg/kg) factorial arrangement. The experiment lasted for 22 d. The results showed that P contents in serum from the hepatic portal vein and tibia ash of broilers were higher (P<0·05) for 0·43 % NPP than for 0·22 % NPP. The type IIb Na-dependent phosphate cotransporter (NaP-IIb) protein expressions in the duodenum and ileum were higher (P<0·05) also for 0·43 % NPP than 0·22 % NPP. Supplementation of VD3 enhanced (P<0·05) tibia P retention rate and type III Na-dependent phosphate cotransporter (PiT)-1 protein expression in the duodenum of all broilers. Moreover, VD3 supplementation decreased (P<0·002) mortality and increased (P<0·02) serum P content from the hepatic portal vein after 4 h of feeding, tibia ash content, tibia ash P content and protein expressions of NaP-IIb and PiT-1 in the jejunum of broilers fed diet with 0·22 % NPP. Thus, dietary supplemental VD3 promoted intestinal P absorption and bone P utilisation, and this effect might be associated with enhanced PiT-1 levels in the duodenum and PiT-1 and NaP-IIb levels in the jejunum respectively when dietary NPP is limiting.

The importance of selenium as a key component of antioxidant systems in animals is well recognised due to much research about this mineral in many species. Selenium is required as part of the antioxidant enzyme structure and plays a major role in various protective systems in animal physiology, including immunity, cellular stability and DNA protection. The following review is the first in a series of three which details the importance of selenium in animal nutrition, and how the chemically organic form, which is akin to the form of the mineral in natural feed materials, can provide increased benefits in utilisation, storage and metabolism compared to inorganic sources.

The opportunities for sustainable utilisation and conservation of chicken genetic resources in Southern Africa need to be addressed. Indigenous chickens are an important animal genetic resource amongst resource-limited rural communities of Southern Africa. They play an important socio-economic role in traditional and religious ceremonies of rural households. They are important in customary rites, such as gift payments. Although the productivity of indigenous chickens in terms of growth and number of eggs per hen per year is low, its production is attained with minimal labour and rearing inputs. The low inputs and, consequently, low risk is one of the major advantages of indigenous chickens production. The conservation of these valuable chicken genetic resources is necessary in the light of the rapid loss of indigenous breeds and strains through commercial dilution and breed replacement. All varieties of domestic species and species with potential for domestication are considered to be important candidates for conservation. Indigenous chicken populations with economic potential, scientific use and cultural or aesthetic interest are of particular importance but all indigenous chickens which are unique and endangered should be incorporated into conservation efforts. This phenotypic information could be useful to standardise the different phenotypes within a region or country and design some criteria for characterisation and description of the indigenous chicken populations into breeds. Molecular markers are an indispensable tool to understand the genetic structures of populations. The assessed phenotypic coupled with genetic information could be a powerful tool towards the promotion of conservation and utilisation of indigenous chicken genetic resources.

À l'aide de données provenant d'une cohorte de 1 352 personnes àgées demeurant dans la communauté et ayant visité l'urgence d'un centre hospitalier, nous avons étudié la prévalence (avant la visite à l'urgence) et l'incidence (pendant une période de suivi de six mois) de l'utilisation des services communautaires de santé ainsi que les facteurs reliés à l'utilisation de ces services. Les données ont été recueillies lors d'entrevues à l'urgence et au téléphone lors du suivi. Avant la visite à l'urgence, 59,8 pour cent des patients avaient au moins une incapacité en regard aux activités de la vie quotidienne (AVQ); 16,8 pour cent des patients ayant une incapacité recevaient des services communautaires. Parmi les patients qui ne recevaient pas ces services auparavant, 45,4 pour cent ont développé une nouvelle incapacité pour les AVQ pendant les trois mois suivant la visite à l'urgence; et 23,5 pour cent des patients avec une nouvelle incapacité ont commencé à recevoir des services communautaires. En contrôlant pour l'ampleur des besoms, les patients admis à l'hôpital se sont avérés être plus susceptibles de recevoir des services pendant la période de suivi que ceux ayant reçu leur congé de l'urgence. Il existe probablement de nombreux besoins non comblés pour les services communautaires dans cette population.

The goal of this literature review is to identify key issues in the patterns of medical care utilization of services for seniors as a contribution to the National Consensus process on designing and delivering health care reforms which foster seniors' independence (Shapiro & Havens, 2000). A search strategy used to identify the relevant literature since 1985 focussing mainly on peer-reviewed journal articles is described and the results of the search strategy are summarized. Key articles are identified, analysed and synthesized based on Canadian and American evidence covering patterns of institutional care, physician use, ambulatory care and the determinants of utilization of these services.

Ensuring the delivery of comprehensive, high quality programs and services to seniors in Canada over the coming decades presents a significant challenge to policy makers and health care professionals. The goal of this study was to provide decision-makers with data on recent trends in the utilization of health services by seniors in Alberta. We compared recent trends in the utilization of acute hospital services (1992/93–1997/98), home care services (1994/95–1997/98), claims for physician consultations and procedures (1995/96–1997/98) and long-term facility care (1990–1996) for Albertans less than and over 65 years of age. We also assessed trends in the use of prescription drugs (1992/93–1997–98) by Albertans 65 years and older. Data for these analyses were obtained from Alberta Health and Wellness administrative databases and reports. Overall, the trends indicate fewer, though sicker, patients being cared for in institutions and more patients being cared for in the community. The receipt of prescription drugs obtained outside of facilities has also increased among seniors in recent years. The extent and appropriateness of substitution of community care for institutional care, the quality of that care, and whether health outcomes are better, worse, or unchanged, are important subjects for further study.

Échantillonnage des ménages de l'Ontario de la section de la santé de l'Enquête nationale sur la santé de la population de 1994–1995 a été relié à la base de données du Ontario Home Care Administrative System et l'on a exploré la relation entre les réponses des personnes interrogées et l'utilisation des soins à domicile dans les années qui ont suivi l'enquête dans le but d'évaluer les variables prédictives des soins à domicile. La prévalence de l'utilisation des soins à domicile chez les sujets de l'enquète s'élevait à 4,3 pour cent. Les facteur indépendants associés à une augmentation probable des soins à domicile étaient un age de 75 et plus, une contrainte des activités quotidiennes (AVQ) et des activités instrumentales de la vie quotidienne (AIVQ), une détérioration de la santé et l'utilisation antérieure de soins à domicile. Il faudra approfondir les travaux pour mieux comprendre les facteurs associés à l'utilisation des soins à domicile si l'on souhaite mieux définir le but et les objectifs des soins à domicile et contribuer à l'élaboration de modèles de financement de ces soins.

The intent of this study was to examine the effect of cognitive status on the use of inhome services by caregivers and their elders. Data from the screening, clinical and community-caregiver phases of the Manitoba Study on Health and Aging (MSHA-1) were analysed utilizing a modified Andersen-Newman model. The findings indicated that those with dementia were more likely to use personal care services and use two or more inhome services than caregivers and their elders with no cognitive impairment and those with cognitive impairment but no dementia. Functional status of the elder and living arrangement of the caregiver and elder were strongly associated with the use of specific inhome services and with overall use. Policy and research implications of the findings including other significant factors such as caregiver employment, are presented.

Introduction. Hibiscus sabdariffa L. est une plante herbacée, vivace, localisée dans les zones tropicales et subtropicales des deux hémisphères. L’espèce est exploitée pour sa fibre et principalement pour ses calices qui sont de trois types : vert, rouge et rouge foncé. Composition. Les calices de type rouge sont les plus utilisés et se caractérisent par leur concentration élevée en anthocyanes qui peut atteindre 1,5 g·kg–1. La delphinidine 3-sambubioside et la cyanidine 3-sambubioside sont les anthocyanes majoritaires avec, respectivement, (71 et 29) % des anthocyanes totaux. Les acides organiques, minéraux et acides aminés sont présents dans les calices, feuilles et graines d’H. sabdariffa à des teneurs variables suivant la variété et la zone géographique. Utilisations. Les utilisations des différentes parties de l’H. sabdariffa sont nombreuses et variées aussi bien dans l’alimentation que dans la médecine traditionnelle. Les calices, du fait de leur concentration élevée en acides, vitamine C et surtout en anthocyanes, constituent la partie de la plante la plus valorisée. Ils sont surtout utilisés pour la production de boissons désaltérantes et tonifiantes sans alcool. Les graines d’H. sabdariffa de par leur richesse en protéine (26 %), lipides (20 %) et sucres totaux (40 %) sont très utilisées dans l’alimentation dans de nombreux pays africains. Les feuilles constituent une bonne source de nutriments et sont utilisées en Afrique pour la préparation de sauces.

Origin and importance. Acerola, or Malpighia emarginata D.C., is native to the Caribbean islands, Central America and the Amazonian region. More recently, it has been introduced in subtropical areas (Asia, India and South America). The vitamin C produced by acerola is better absorbed by the human organism than synthetic ascorbic acid. Exportation of acerola crops is a potential alternative source of income in agricultural businesses. In Brazil, the commercial farming of acerola is quite recent. Climatic conditions. Acerola is a rustic plant. It can resist temperatures close to 0 °C, but it is well adapted to temperatures around 26 °C with rainfall between (1200 and 1600) mm per year. Fruit characteristics. Acerola fruit is drupaceous, whose form can vary from round to conic. When ripe, it can be red, purple or yellow. The fruit weight varies between (3 and 16) g. Maturation. Acerola fruit presents fast metabolic activity and its maturation occurs rapidly. When commercialised in ambient conditions, it requires fast transportation or the use of refrigerated containers to retard its respiration and metabolism partially. Production and productivity. Flowering and fruiting are typically in cycles associated with rain. Usually, they take place in 25-day cycles, up to 8 times per year. The plant can be propagated by cuttings, grafting or seedlings. Harvest. Fruits produced for markets needs to be harvested at its optimal maturation stage. For distant markets, they need to be packed in boxes and piled up in low layers; transportation should be done in refrigerated trucks in relatively high humid conditions. Biochemical constituents. Acerola is the most important natural source of vitamin C [(1000 to 4500) mg·100–1 g of pulp], but it is also rich in pectin and pectolytic enzymes, carotenoids, plant fibre, vitamin B, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, proteins and mineral salts. It has also shown active anti-fungal properties. Products and market. Acerola is used in the production of juice, soft drinks, gums and liqueurs. The USA and Europe are great potential markets. In Europe, acerola extracts are used to enrich pear or apple juices. In the USA, they are used in the pharmaceutical industry. Conclusions. The demand for acerola has increased significantly in recent years because of the relevance of vitamin C in human health, coupled with the use of ascorbic acid as an antioxidant in food and feed. Acerola fruit contains other significant components, which are likely to lead to a further increase in its production and trade all over the world.

The plant. The aguaje (Mauritia flexuosa L. f.) is an Amazonian palm which grows naturally on flooded soils, forming dense gatherings called aguajales in Peru. It can reach a height of 35–40 m. Each tree has an average of 8 inflorescences per year and each inflorescence produces about 900 fruits. This palm is in the domestication process. A dwarf form, recently discovered, could permit the improvement of the methods of production. The fruit. The fruit is an ellipsoid oval-shaped drupe, covered by red or dark red-coloured cornea scales. It measures (5 to 7) cm long and (4 to 5) cm in diameter. The pulp has a high content of β-carotene (260 mg·100 g–1 of pulp). Marketing. Marketing is carried out for fruits coming from the natural environment. There is a local consumption of approximately 150 t·month–1 and it can be of raw or processed fruit. For this fruit’s demand, it is necessary to cut down approximately 24 000 palms a year. Discussion. The aguaje has big social and economical importance to these regions' inhabitants. It represents great potential for the national as well as the international market. The Research Institute of the Peruvian Amazon (IIAP) is devel-oping technologies for agronomical management of the species, and for production and proc-essing of the fruit. Studies on aguaje growth and genetic diversity in the natural conditions also have to be carried out.

Optimal utilisation of limited phosphate resources in animal feeding requires detailed knowledge of both the requirement for available phosphorus (P), and the availability of P from relevant feed ingredients. In growing ducks, the P concentration of gained body weight and the inevitable P losses voided determine the requirement for available P. The concentration of available P needed in the diet then depends on the feed conversion ratio. Plant and mineral feedstuffs contribute to the available P content of the diet depending on their respective availability. This review summarises the literature on P nutrition in ducks with regard to factors affecting P requirement and considerations of P availability, including the use of microbial phytase. Most of the published data refer to the Pekin duck. The P content in body weight gain is 5.0–5.5 g/kg in young ducks, and it probably decreases with age. The ratio of Ca to P in body weight gain is about 1.8:1. Inevitable P losses are not yet quantified and can only be estimated to account for 1 g/kg of feed intake. Availability of P from plant-based diets without P supplements and phytase ranged between 28 and 49%. Availability of P from different mineral sources ranged between 77 and 100%. Microbial phytases were efficient in improving the availability of P from plant-based diets. A simple model is presented, which allows flexible calculations to be made of the necessary P concentrations in the diets for ducks. The most efficient tool for reducing the use of P sources is the frequent adjustment of the dietary P content during the growth period. Data from growth studies indicate that the suggestions made herein are sufficiently safe for application in Pekin duck feeding.

Indigenous Tswana pigs are mostly found in Southern Botswana. There is concern that the breed may become extinct due to the low usage of the breed and the lack of implementation of a comprehensive conservation strategy. The objectives of this study were to identify places where indigenous Tswana pigs are kept in Gaborone Agricultural Region and document the numbers, distribution, management and utilisation of these pigs. A formal questionnaire was administered to all indigenous pig farmers who could be identified. The data was analysed using procedure frequency in Statistical System Analysis. A total of 51 indigenous pig farmers were interviewed, of these 71%, 16% and 14% were in Southeast, Kgatleng and Kweneng districts respectively. Only one farmer kept crossbreeds with the majority keeping pure indigenous Tswana. A total of 124 sows, 23 boars, 32 castrates and 211 piglets were counted in this region. All the pigs were kept under the communal system. None of the farmers surveyed kept records and they exhibited limited knowledge of pig farming and improved management. Pigs were kept for home consumption with very few sold, given out as gifts or loaned out. Pig fat was used as a by-product to make soap and a lubricant in traditional leather rope making. The farmers’ perception of indigenous pigs is good; they claim that the pigs posses traits of economic importance such as high heat and drought tolerance, which are of great significance in the harsh climatic conditions of Botswana. There is a need to undertake conservation efforts for this breed given that it survives and reproduces under harsh climatic conditions and sub-standard management. More research and further action is required to increase the production of this breed.

Introduction. Pays d'Afrique de l'Ouest, la Guinée a un climat tropical et un relief accidenté, avec un réseau hydrographique important. Elle présente quatre régions naturelles dans lesquelles se développent spontanément plusieurs espèces fruitières dont les fruits sont actuellement consommés et vendus dans les marchés nationaux. Afin de mieux exploiter ces produits, des enquêtes ont cherché à constituer une base de données fiables identifiant les espèces fruitières impliquées, leurs zones et leurs périodes de production, le circuit de commercialisation des produits, leurs techniques de conservation, de transformation et de consommation. Matériel et méthodes. Un suivi des prix des fruits de cueillette commercialisés en Guinée et une analyse approfondie de leur production et de leur utilisation ont été réalisés de mars 1998 à février 2000 sur deux mêmes marchés guinéens. Pour cela, les informations requises (prix, période, conditionnement, circuit de commercialisation) ont été collectées par enquêtes effectuées tous les quinze jours et consignées sur une fiche spécifique. Résultats. L'étude a mis en évidence d'éventuels problèmes d'approvisionnement des marchés, liés à leur site. Parmi les espèces identifiées, douze se sont révélées plus importantes et ont fait l'objet d'analyses. Leurs zones de production ont été définies. La majorité des fruits commercialisés sur les marchés enquêtés mûrissent entre mars et juin ; ils représentent une source de revenus pour une bonne part de la population. Les techniques de conservation, de commercialisation, de transformation et de consommation ont été répertoriées. Conclusion. L'enquête effectuée conduit à encourager la protection des fruitiers de cueillette et à conseiller leur introduction progressive dans les vergers familiaux. Les programmes de recherches nationaux cherchent à intervenir également dans la transformation et la conservation des produits issus de cueillettes, qui posent de grosses difficultés aux producteurs.

Introduction. Le babaco (Carica pentagona Heilb.), plante équatoriale de mon- tagne, est originaire d'Équateur. Ses fruits sont particulièrement appréciés pour leur arôme caractéristique. La plante. Le babaco est un arbuste semi-ligneux de la famille des Caricacées. Cet hybride naturel se cultive en Équateur entre (1500 et 2500) m. Les rendements de production sont compris entre (60 et 80) fruits par plante et par an. Le fruit. Le fruit du babaco est une baie asperme jaune à maturité. Son arôme caractéristique se rapproche à la fois de l'ananas, du citron et de la papaye. Quand le fruit est vert, il exsude un latex qui con- tient une activité protéolytique semblable à celle de la papaye. Transformation. Le fruit est consommé essentiellement à l'état frais. La fabrication de pulpe, conserves et de fruits déshy- dratés est également possible. L'extraction et la purification des enzymes protéolytiques du latex des fruits verts pourrait être une nouvelle voie de valorisation industrielle du babaco. Tendances économiques. Grâce à des rendements de production élevés, ce fruit a éveillé un grand intérêt commercial. L'Équateur et la Nouvelle-Zélande sont les deux seuls pays où le babaco est cultivé à grande échelle. Conclusion. Le babaco présente d'intéressantes perspec- tives économiques, grâce notamment à ses propriétés sensorielles et à ses potentialités comme source d'enzymes protéolytiques.

Introduction. Originaire du Brésil, l'anacardier est largement présent dans la zone intertropicale. Une synthèse sur les intérêts économiques et les différentes voies de valorisations des produits de cet arbre a été effectuée. L'anacardier. De part sa résistance, notamment aux périodes de sécheresse, l'espèce Anacardium occidentale (anacardiacée) est adaptée à de nombreuses zones tropicales. Malgré sa tolérance aux attaques parasitaires, elle peut être sensible à certains insectes et attaques fongiques comme l'oïdium. Les rendements moyens obtenus pour la noix sont d'environ 600 kg × ha-1 × an-1 ; ils sont susceptibles d'être améliorés grâce à la sélection variétale. La noix de cajou. Elle est le fruit de l'anacardier au sens botanique du terme. L'amande est riche en lipides et contient environ 20 % de protéines. En 1999, les principaux producteurs mondiaux de noix de cajou ont été l'Inde, le Nigéria, le Brésil et la Tanzanie, qui ont produit chacun plus de 100 000 t × an-1. Après concassage de la coque et émondage, ce produit à forte valeur ajoutée est le plus souvent exporté. La pomme de cajou. Elle correspond au pédoncule hypertrophié de la noix qui possède à maturité une chair juteuse et sucrée. Ses principales caractéristiques sont son astringence et sa teneur élevée en vitamine C (200-300 mg × 100 g-1). La pomme de cajou est assez peu valorisée sauf en Inde et au Brésil, notamment sous forme de jus de fruit. Autres productions. Le baume de cajou est une production secondaire assez originale : extrait des coques de la noix, ce liquide corrosif, riche en composés phénoliques, est utilisé dans l'industrie chimique. Conclusion. La culture de l'anacardier, avec sa diversité de produits et notamment avec la noix qui est bien intégrée aux marchés internationaux, semble pouvoir constituer une source intéressante de revenus pour les zones tropicales sèches. Néanmoins, la pomme mériterait d'être mieux valorisée car elle reste encore un sous-produit de l'industrie de la noix de cajou.
