This article examines how mayfield brooks uses spatial, discursive, and vestibular disorientations to intervene within anti-Black regimes of perception in their Improvising While Black (IWB) workshops, which draw from their ongoing life/art project by the same name. Drawing from insights gathered through my participation in IWB workshops as well as through conversations with brooks and other workshop participants, I examine what brooks's guided disorientations do, that is, what they produce kinetically, perceptually, and relationally among participants. I show how brooks's disorientations expand on Sachi Sekimoto and Christopher Brown's conceptualization of racialized regimes of perception by revealing a set of choreographic tropes that undergird those regimes. These include perceiving from a vertical posture, leading movement from the head, navigating based on visual cues while inhibiting responsivity to other senses, turning away from cultural and ancestral context, and relating to self and others as individuals. Drawing on examinations of disorientation within contemporary dance practice and critical race theory, I argue that brooks guides participants into disorienting improvisations that draw attention to, refuse participation within, and generate otherwise possibilities to this choreography.

Background: The link between asthma and exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) is not completely understood. The aim of this study was to estimate the association between FENO and asthma, taking genetics, sensitization, and inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) into account. Methods: A total of 681 twins (53% monozygotic [MZ] and 47% dizygotic [DZ]) from the population-based STOPPA study (mean age 12.6 years) were recruited and information on FENO (parts per billion), parental report of current asthma, sensitization to airborne allergens (Phadiatop; IgE ≥0.35 kUA/l), and ICS-treatment was collected. We estimated the association between FENO and asthma, sensitization, and ICS in all twins and within pairs (DZ and MZ) to address shared genetic and environmental factors. Linear regression of log-transformed FENO was used and results presented as exponentiated regression coefficients (exp[β]), with 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: We found an association between asthma and FENO in all twins, exp(β) 1.31 [1.11, 1.54]. In within-pairs analysis, the association was stronger within DZ pairs discordant for FENO, exp(β) 1.50 [1.19, 1.89], compared to MZ pairs, exp(β) 1.07 [0.84, 1.37], p = .049. There was no difference in FENO in non-sensitized children with asthma, compared to children with neither asthma nor sensitization, exp(β) 0.89 [0.77, 1.03]. However, increased FENO was associated with sensitization, exp(β) 1.48 [1.30, 1.69], and with sensitization together with asthma, exp(β) 1.98 [1.57, 2.51], in all twins and within DZ pairs discordant for FENO, but not in MZ pairs. The FENO asthma association remained in DZ pairs without regular ICS-treatment. Conclusions: The association between FENO and asthma is explained by genetics and sensitization.

Repeated exposure of rats to cocaine, amphetamine, opiates, nicotine and alcohol causes a very long-lasting (months) increase in the behavioral effects of these addictive drugs and drug-associated environmental stimuli (sensitization). This hypersensitivity is associated with persistent changes in the reactivity of neurons of the motivational (mesocorticolim-bic) system in the brain. Using an animal model for relapse, recent studies in our laboratory show that relapse to drug-seeking behavior (following extinction of intravenous cocaine or heroin self-administration) depends on the occurrence of sensitization. Accordingly, sensitization and conditioning seem to be more important for the persistence of drug and alcohol addiction then the occurrence of withdrawal phenomena. Biochemical research on the molecular and cellular basis of behavioral sensitization and behavioral studies on readjustment of stimulus responsiveness in rats, is of great importance for the development of an adequate pharmacotherapy of addiction.

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes/Pd nanoparticles (CNT/Pd) were prepared by different four synthesis techniques. After the chemical oxidation of CNTs, the infrared absorption data indicated the existence of several functional groups loaded on the CNTs surfaces. The first Pd deposition technique went through the processes of Sn sensitization and Pd deposition on the functionalized surfaces of CNTs. The second method was Pd deposition by polyol process. The third method was Pd deposition using hydrazine in acidic media. In the fourth method, fourth generation poly(amidoamine) dendrimer and sodium borohydride were used as an intermediator between Pd and the surfaces of CNTs and as a reducing agent of the palladium chloride, respectively. It was observed from transmission electron microscope analysis of the produced CNT/Pd nanoparticles that the Pd particles on the CNTs prepared by the fourth method had the smallest average particle size of 3 nm. The Pd contents in the produced CNT/Pd nanocomposite powders were determined by thermogravimetric analysis.

Spike discharges from the descending contralateral movement detector (DCMD) were recorded extracellularly from the ventral nerve cord of the locust in complete darkness, in response to dim flashes of constant-intensity light, and in response to pairs of identical flashes presented different intervals apart. Three phenomena were discovered: novel long-term sensitization which changes the DCMD's sensitivity to light, a multiplicative cascade process driven by shot events, and the suppression of the spike discharge shortly after a dim flash.

The DCMD's spike discharge is stochastic. It can be considered as a two-stage cascade process producing intrinsic multiplicative noise. An effective photon, or thermal isomerization in complete darkness, produces an unseen shot event which in turn initiates a random number of DCMD spikes in a cluster. A shot initiates a variable number of spikes when it directs the rate of a Poisson process. The results of statistical analyses are consistent with this model when the amplitudes of shot events are variable. The transmission efficiency is low because at least 2.4–9.6 quantum bumps are required to produce one extra DCMD spike.

The DCMD has a constant mean discharge rate of 0.25–1.5 spikes/s in complete darkness. Clustering about particular points in time (shots) leads to a lack of independence between interspike intervals, and the overdispersion of interspike interval and number distributions compared with those from a simple Poisson process. The mean cluster size is 1.3–1.6 spikes in darkness. Similar clustering was found in response to flashes of light.

A dim flash changes the DCMD's sensitivity to light, even at threshold when no spike discharge results. Sensitization occurs because the average number of shot events produced by isoquantal flashes depends on the history of visual stimulation. This contributes to the nonlinear response-intensity function. The evolution of sensitization is roughly constant in different DCMD cells, lasting approximately 3 s after a flash. Sensitization was observed in response to light only, presumably because the intensity of dark-light is too low. It is proposed that sensitization is associated with a set of processes or molecular state in the presynaptic region of a chemical synapse.

Neurons of the amygdala respond to a variety of stressors. The basolateral amygdala (BLA) receives dense norepinephrine (NE) innervation from the locus coeruleus, and stressful and conditioned stimuli cause increases in NE levels within the BLA. Furthermore, chronic stress exposure leads to sensitization of the stress response. The actions of NE in different structures involved in the stress circuit have been shown to play a role in this sensitization response. Here, we examine how chronic cold stress alters NE modulation of spontaneous and evoked activity in the BLA. In controls, NE inhibited spontaneous firing in the majority of BLA neurons, with some neurons showing excitation at lower doses and inhibition at higher doses of NE. NE also decreased the responsiveness of these neurons to electrical stimulation of the entorhinal and sensory association cortices. After chronic cold exposure, NE caused increases in spontaneous activity in a larger proportion of BLA neurons than in controls, and now produced a facilitation of responses evoked by stimulation of entorhinal and sensory association cortical inputs. These studies show that chronic cold exposure leads to an increase in the excitatory effects of NE on BLA neuronal activity, and suggest a mechanism by which organisms may display an enhancement of hormonal, autonomic, and behavioural responses to acute stressful stimuli after chronic stress exposure.

This target article examines the clinical and experimental evidence for a role of peripheral and central hyperexcitability in persistent pain in four key areas: cutaneous hyperalgesia, referred pain, neuropathic pain, and postoperative pain. Each suggests that persistent pain depends not only on central sensitization, but also on inputs from damaged peripheral tissue. It is instructive to think of central sensitization as comprised of both an initial central sensitization and an ongoing central sensitization driven by inputs from peripheral sources. Each of these factors, initial sensitization, ongoing central sensitization, and inputs from peripheral sources, contributes to the net activity in dorsal horn neurons and thus influences the expression of persistent pain or hyperalgesia. Since each factor, peripheral inputs and central sensitization (initial or ongoing), can contribute to both the initiation and maintenance of persistent pain, therapies should target both peripheral and central sources of pathology.
