This chapter looks at the right-wing landscape in Chile, in particular the four parties present in it. To better understand the similarities and differences between these four parties, this chapter analyzes novel survey data that allows for a detailed description of those who identify with the right in contemporary Chile. By mapping out the right-wing electorate, the authors show that the formation of a stable electoral coalition between these four right-wing parties is anything but simple because of the important ideological differences between their voters.

The chapter focuses on two key aspects of Friedrich Kittler’s analysis of Richard Wagner’s Ring of the Nibelung. First, drawing on Kittler’s account of changing ‘discourse networks’, the cycle is seen (and heard) as a highly media-conscious total work of art that rises from noise into meaning and ultimately returns back to noise. Music and words are able to create and transmit messages by analysing their own technical properties. The second aspect is the modernisation of war. With the help of his Valkyrie daughters, Wagner’s Wotan turns into a modern warlord who no longer bullies unwilling conscripts or mercenaries but instead mobilises the affect of modern soldier-subjects  Wagner’s Siegfried, in turn, embodies military reforms that go by the name of mission tactics. He is the human equivalent of a fully autonomous drone: the new and independently operating soldier or partisan programmed from above to think on his own.

Small wars, or guerrilla wars, had an enormous impact in the age of Napoleon. Fought by peasants with access to land and resources, guerrilla wars in Haiti and Spain, in particular, reshaped the world in ways as profound as any of the major regular campaigns. They bled and demoralized the French and set the stage for the emergence of new nations in the Americas. This essay examines the two successful guerrilla wars in Haiti and Spain and compares them to two failed guerrilla wars in Calabria and the Tyrol in order to identify the key factors determining success or failure by guerrilla forces. Among the keys to success were: the geo-strategic importance of the theater of war; mobilizing ideologies; the presence of imperial troops for a long period of time with all of the resulting violence that implies; the reliance of imperial troops on requisitions in the countryside; the presence of strong allies; the impact of disease; and, above all, the presence of socio-economic conditions that both motivated peasants to take up arms to defend their families, land, and resources against long odds and that supplied peasants with the wherewithal to survive the French counterinsurgency.

The first part of the chapter discusses Serbia during the Great War. Following initial military successes, Serbias army was forced to retreat, together with the government and the royal family, to the Greek island of Corfu in late 1915. By late 1918, a recuperated Serbian army, together with its allies, liberated Serbia and occupied much of what would soon become Yugoslavia. Serbia suffered enormously in the war, but its domination of interwar Yugoslavia alienated non-Serbs and many formerly Habsburg Serbs. In response to the political crisis, King Aleksandar Karadjordjević introduced dictatorship in 1929. His project to create a unified Yugoslav nation had largely failed even before his assassination in 1934. The late 1930s saw a partial return to democracy, in contrast to developments elsewhere in East-Central Europe, a Serb-Croat compromise, and a move closer to Berlin and Rome. Serb officers and most political leaders rejected a pact with the Axis in 1941, leading to the invasion and partition of Yugoslavia by the Axis. The final part discusses resistance, civil war and collaboration and the German policy of reprisals against Serbs, Jews and Roma in occupied Serbia.

Chapter 7 describes events in Albania during the Second World War. During this critical period, two different Albanias are constructed. Following the Italian invasion a series of puppet regimes are installed which initially gain some support as Rome invests heavily in much-needed infrastructure and general development. Mussolini hopes to gain further support by encouraging "Greater Albania" dreams through his ultimately disastrous invasion of Greece. The chapter examines the formation of the Albanian Communist Party and the resultant growth in resistance movements. With the Italian collapse, the Germans invade and occupy Albania, constructing their own puppet regimes that gain only limited support. As the end of the war nears, the resistance degenerates into civil war. With the help of extensive British aid, the communist-dominated partisans, as the only national movement and the only group untainted by collaboration, are victorious and construct a new regime. The chapter concludes with an evaluation of the profound impact of the war.
