The Marepalli dyke of the Vattikod cluster of the Ramadugu Lamproite Field, Nalgonda district, Telangana, India consists of pseudomorphed leucite, phlogopite (Al-poor, Ti-rich zoned phlogopite micas), pseudomorphed olivine, fluorapatite and Al-poor diopside embedded in groundmass consisting mainly of poikilitic Fe-rich titanian phlogopite and potassic amphibole. Other groundmass minerals are Al-Na-poor diopside, Al-poor spinels (titanian magnesian chromites to titanian chromites), Sr-rich fluorapatite and late-stage interstitial anhedral crystals of titanite and K-feldspar. The late-stage deuteric minerals present are REE-rich allanite, pyrite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, galena, hydro-zircon, carbonates (calcite, witherite and strontianite), baryte and cryptocrystalline SiO2. Apatite is an early crystallising phase and is present as inclusions in phlogopite and pyroxene. Phlogopite and amphibole occur as inclusions in titanite and K-feldspar. The compositional trends of phlogopite are of almost constant Al2O3 content with FeOT and TiO2 enrichment, and are typical of lamproitic micas. The FeOT enrichment is accompanied additionally by MgO depletion (reflecting VIFe2+ enrichment) from core to rim together with a slight increase in the tetraferric iron component. Diopside is characterised by <0.4 wt.% alumina and <0.6 wt.% sodium contents and exhibits typical lamproitic affinity. The spinels are alumina-poor with un-evolved titanian magnesian chromite to titanian chromite compositions. The presence of K-richterite, as an abundant amphibole, indicates a lamproite affinity, and on the basis of the typomorphic mineralogy, this rock is classified as a ‘pseudoleucite-amphibole-phlogopite lamproite’. The Marepalli lamproite shows significant difference in compositional ranges of phlogopite, amphibole, pyroxene and spinel in comparison to those reported from the Vattikod, Gundrapalli, Ramadugu, Somavarigudem and Yacharam lamproites of Ramadugu Lamproite Field. These lamproites are considered to form from a common parent magma under reducing conditions as evidenced from: (1) low tetraferric iron content in phlogopite; (2) low Fe3+# and Ti# in spinels; and (3) high F content in phlogopite and apatite.

We describe the mineralogy of a lamproite dyke from Gundrapalli village (Nalgonda district), Telangana, India. The dyke consists of a mineral assemblage characteristic of lamproites in terms of the presence of amphiboles (mainly potassic-richterite together with potassic-arfvedsonite, magnesio-riebeckite, Ti-rich potassic-magnesio-arfvedsonite, potassic-magnesio-arfvedsonite, katophorite and potassic-ferri-katophorite), Al-poor pyroxene, phlogopite (Ti-rich, Al-poor), pseudomorphed leucite, spinel (chromite-magnesiochromite), fluorapatite, baryte, titanite, rutile, barytocalcite, calcite, ilmenite, hydro-zircon, baotite, strontianite, allanite, quartz and pyrite. The absence of wadeite and priderite have been compensated for by the presence of baotite, rutile, titanite, baryte and hydro-zircons. The presence of the secondary phases: allanite, hydro-zircon, chlorite, quartz and cryptocrystalline silica, implies that the dyke has undergone deuteric alteration. On the basis of its typomorphic mineralogy the Gundrapalli dyke has been classified as a pseudoleucite-phlogopite-amphibole-lamproite. We report the presence of the rare mineral baotite from this lamproite, the first recognition of baotite from a lamproite in India. The mineralogy of the baotite-bearing Gundrapalli lamproite is analogous to the baotite-bearing Kvaløya lamproite from Troms, Norway.

Inclusions occurring in leucites from the Oscar and Zirkel Mesa leucite lamproites consist of high (>10 wt.%) and low (<4 wt.%) K2O discrete glass phases which are interpreted to have resulted from silicate liquid immiscibility. Both glasses are quartz-normative and rich in Ti, Fe, Mg, Ca and Ba and poor in Al. The high-K glass is strongly peralkaline. Neither of the glasses have compositions representative of any known lamproites. These inclusions represent the first described examples of silicate-silicate immiscibility shown by glass in alkaline rocks.

The lamproite of Gaussberg is an ultrapotassic rock where leucite, olivine and clinopyroxene microphenocrysts occur in a glass-rich groundmass, containing microliths of leucite, clinopyroxene, apatite, phlogopite and rare K-richterite.

Abundant silicate melt inclusions occur in olivine, leucite and, rarely, in clinopyroxene microphenocrysts. Raman investigations on melt inclusions showed the presence of pure CO2 in the shrinkage bubbles. On the other hand, the glass of the groundmass is CO2-poor and contains up to 0.70 wt.% of dissolved H2O, as estimated by infrared spectra. It is inferred that CO2 was released at every stage of evolution of the lamproite magma (CO2-rich shrinkage bubbles), whereas H2O was retained for longer in the liquid. At Gaussberg, CO2 seems to have a major role at relatively high pressure where it favoured the crystallization of H2O-poor microphenocrysts; the uprise of the magma to the surface decreased the solubility of CO2 and caused a relative increase in water activity. As a consequence, phlogopite and K-richterite appeared in the groundmass.

The glass composition of both the groundmass and melt inclusions suggests different evolutions for the residual liquids of the investigated samples. Sample G886 shows the typical evolution of a lamproite magma, where the residual liquid evolves toward peralkaline and Na-rich composition and crystallizes K-richterite in the latest stage. Sample G895 derives from mixing/mingling of different batches of magma; effectively glasses from melt inclusions in leucite and clinopyroxene are more alkaline than those found in early crystallized olivine. Leucite and clinopyroxene crystallized early from a relatively more alkaline batch of lamproite magma and, successively, a less alkaline, olivinebearing magma batch assimilated them during its rise to the surface.

Members of the roedderite-chayesite series in lamproites from Cancarix (SE Spain), crystallized from late magmatic residua under low PH2O, high temperature (∼ 1100°C), oxidizing conditions. They exhibit the following main chemical variations: 0.14 ⩽ Na ⩽ 0.62 atoms per formula unit (apfu); 0.80 ⩽ K⩽ 1.00 apfu; 2.97 ⩽ Mg ⩽ 4.33 apfu; 0.00 ⩽ Fe2+ ⩽ 1.19 apfu; 0.42 ⩽ Fe3+ ⩽ 0.87 apfu; they are hexagonal (10.120 ⩽ a ⩽ 10.135 Å, 14.305 ⩽ c ⩽ 14.326 Å), P6/mcc. The characteristic chemical substitution is: Fe3+ + □ ⇌ Fe2+ + (K+Na)+. Six crystal structures have been refined to 0.020 ⩽ Robs ⩽ 0.026. They have the osumilite/milarite-type structure, with Si entering the double tetrahedral T1 six-membered rings, and Mg and Fe entering both the ring-linking T2 tetrahedra, and the A octahedra. The 12-coordinated C site, located between two double rings of T1 tetrahedra, is occupied mainly by K and subordinately by Na. Furthermore, Na occupies the partially empty nine-fold coordinated B site which occurs both in the ideal (z = 0) and in a split-atom position along the c direction.

Gold of magmatic origin has been discovered in the lamproitic dyke of El Tale (Fortuna, Province of Murcia), a small outcrop of ultrapotassic rocks of tile Tertiary magmatic province of southeastern Spain. It is the first finding of gold grains in lamproite magmas from southeastern Spain, and indeed worldwide. Pure gold occurs only in the glassy groundmass as very rare spherules and globular grains (up to 5 µm). Despite the occurrence of gold grains, the bulk rock contains not more than ∼19 ppb Au.

The magmatic origin of gold is inferred from the heterogeneous distribution of the grains in the rock, the shape of the grains (which is comparable to that of gold grains crystallized experimentally from mafic liquids) and from the As-Sb-S-Cl-poor composition of the bulk rock. The Pd/Ir and Au/Pd ratios, little affected by the early segregation of olivine (∼10 vol.%), support an Au- and PGE-rich composition of the mantle source. The low f O2 (≈IW) and the complexing with F and alkalies probably favoured partitioning of Au and PGE into the lamproite magma.

A detailed mineralogical examination of representative material from the P2-West 'kimberlite' located in the Wajrakarur Kimberlite Field (India) demonstrates that significant differences exist between these rocks and archetypal hypabyssal kimberlite. The intrusion consists of an olivine-phyric facies which has been transected by, and includes clasts of, a consanguineous phlogopite-rich pegmatitic facies. The olivine-rich parts of P2-West are relatively fresh and consist of euhedral-to-subhedral microphenocrystal olivine set in a groundmass of fine-grained anhedral monticellite, amoeboid apatite, and subhedral-to-euhedral perovskite within a partially chloritized-to-fresh phlogopite-rich mesostasis. The rock lacks the abundant olivine macrocrysts characteristic of kimberlite. Monticellite crystals are commonly partially or completely replaced by pectolite and hydrogarnet. Similar material occurs as irregular aggregates randomly scattered throughout the groundmass. The groundmass, in contrast to that of hypabyssal kimberlites, is relatively poor in spinels. Atoll spinels are absent, with the majority of spinels occurring principally as mantles upon microphenocrystal olivine. Disaggregated cumulate-like assemblages of intergrown anhedral perovskite and spinel are common. Spinel compositions are unlike those of kimberlites and their evolutionary trend is similar to that of lamproite and lamprophyre spinels. The pegmatitic facies of the intrusion are highly and pervasively altered, and characterized by the presence of large clasts, veins, and irregular aggregates consisting of large (1–5 mm) crystals of pinkish-bronze Al-poor phlogopite intergrown with and/or including: apatite; pectolite-hydrogarnet pseudomorphs after an unidentified euhedral phase; chlorite laths; barytolamprophyllite; perovskite; tausonite; diverse Sr-Ba-carbonates; and baryte. The presence of barytolamprophyllite and tausonite are typical of potassic undersaturated alkaline rocks and have never been reported from kimberlite; however, neither feldspar nor feldspathoids are present in P2-West. Micas in fresh and altered rocks are Al2O3- and BaO-poor, and exhibit compositional evolutionary trends towards tetraferriphlogopite rather than kinoshitalite. On the basis of these mineralogical data it is suggested that P2-West represents an unusual lamproite-like intrusion which has undergone extensive hydrothermal deuteric alteration and should not be considered a bona fide kimberlite.

Na-poor, Fe-bearing high sanidine from a lamproite near Cancarix (Spain) has 2Vα‖(010) = 37-43° and C2/m, a = 8.598(15), b = 13.050(26), c = 7.209(17) Å, β = 116.00(18)° V = 727(2) Å3. Rims of sanidine crystals against vugs contain up to 60 mole % KFeSi3O8 and up to 10 at.% Si and 6 at.% K above the stoichiometric requirement; otherwise, they have up to 4 mole % □Si4O8 and 3 mole % K2O.Si4O8 in solid solution. Their MgO content may reach 0.46 wt.%. The skeletons of mm sized blocky crystals (Baveno habit) indicate formation under moderate undercooling at temperatures not much above 725°C Feldspar formation was facilitated by a high diffusion rate due to low viscosity in a highly perpotassic melt, supersaturated by pressure release and diopside fractionation, upon extrusion of a huge volume of lava in a crater. After titanian potassium-richterite largely filled the interstices in the sanidine fabric, crystals of dalyite (K2ZrSi6O15) and Fe-rich rims of sanidine and amphibole crystals were formed from an increasingly hydrous, silicic, ferric, and peralkaline residual melt. High rate nonequilibrium crystallisation caused the incorporation of excess SiO2 and K2O in the defect structure of the sanidine. Retrograde boiling initiated the escape of volatiles, causing the quenching, by which the disordered structural state and the nonstoichiometric composition of the sanidine were preserved.

Two mineralogically distinct lamproites occurring as dykes in the Raniganj coalfield of eastern India are described in terms of a mineralogical-genetic classification as: (1) peralkaline olivine-ilmenitephlogopite- K-feldspar lamproite (var. Damodar); and (2) peralkaline pseudoleucite-phlogopite-amphibole- K-feldspar lamproite (var. Damodar). Compositional and paragenetic data are provided for major, accessory and trace minerals. Minerals common to both rocks include: chlorite-pseudomorphed phenocrystal olivine, phenocrystal Ti-rich Al-poor phlogopite and tetraferriphlogopite, groundmass potassic amphiboles, Sr-rich apatite and monazite-(Ce), late stage Na-poor K-feldspar and quartz. The rocks differ in terms of the character of the amphiboles (Ti-potassian arfvedsonite vs. K-richterite– K-magnesioarfvedsonite–K-arfvedsonite solid solution), spinel compositions (qandilite–chromite– magnetite vs. chromite–ulvöspinel–magnetite), the presence or absence of: pseudoleucite, microphenocrystal magnesian ilmenite, diopside, titanian aegirine, lorenzenite, an unamed Ti-silicate, an unnamed Mg-Zr silicate, bazirite, rutile, dolomite and norsethite. The rocks are considered to be members of a spectrum of modally-diverse peralkaline rocks, formed from a common parental magma produced by the partial melting of the ancient metasomatized lithospheric mantle of the northern Singhbhum craton. None of the rocks can be considered as aillikites, minettes, orangeites or kimberlites.

Mineralogical, geochemical and isotopic data including K-Ar age determinations are presented for one of the largely unknown, Mesozoic ultramafic (lamproitic) occurrences of the Aldan Shield. Ultramafic, ultrapotassic rocks occur as isolated pipes or as dykes in alkaline complexes as the Yakokut complex. K-Ar dating of phlogopites from different ultramafic dyke rocks of Yakokut give cooling ages of 133.3 ± 1.3 Ma. These rocks generally contain olivine, clinopyroxene, phlogopite and spinel phenocrysts. Olivines are forsterite-rich (Fo86–94) and undeformed, suggesting that they are phenocrysts. The low Ti and Al contents of clinopyroxenes are close to those of lamproites. Phlogopite cores are rich in Al2O3 and TiO2 relative to the rims with two different zonation trends caused by distinct crystallization conditions after emplacement. Spinels are Ti-bearing magnetites and Ti-Al-magnesiochromites with high Cr/(Cr+Al) ratios (> 0.9), indicating their crystallization from a lamproitic melt.

Geochemically, the rocks are ultrabasic — basic with high mg# values, low Ca, Al, Na and strong enrichments of Rb, Ba and K. Their CaO/Al2O3, Zr/Nb or Ba/Sr ratios indicate their lamproitic nature and origin in the subcontinental lithosphere of a depleted mantle source which had undergone metasomatic enrichment. As the rocks all show strong negative Nb anomalies and low Ti, Y and Yb contents, the enrichment is attributed to subduction zone fluids. The Sr-Nd-data (87Sr/86Sr0 0.70573−0.70605 ± 0.00003; ɛNd − 10.2 ± 0.7) indicate the origin by partial melting of a heterogeneous mantle source with relatively low Rb/Sr ratios and an early enrichment. The evolution model comprises a depletion of ‘basaltic elements’, leading to a harzburgitic source which was enriched by an early LREE contribution during the stabilization of the Archaean to Proterozoic Aldan Shield. It is further suggested that the Mesozoic northwesterly directed subduction of the Ochotsk-Chukotsk belt influenced the subcontinental lithosphere underneath the Aldan Shield, leading to the observed subduction-related signature of the Yakokut lamproites.

The mineralogy of nine recently discovered dykes (VL1:VL8 and VL10) in the vicinity of Vattikod village, Nalgonda district in Telangana State is described. The mineral assemblage present and their compositions are comparable to those of bona fide lamproites in terms of the presence of phlogopite (Ti-rich, Al-poor phlogopite and tetraferriphlogopite); amphiboles (potassic-arfvedsonite, potassic-richterite, potassic-ferro-richterite, potassic-katophorite, Ti-rich potassic-katophorite, Ti-rich potassic-magnesio-katophorite); Al-poor clinopyroxenes; feldspars (K-feldspar, Ba-K-feldspar and Na-feldspar) and spinels (chromite-magnetite and qandilite-ulvöspinel-franklinite). These dykes have undergone diverse and significant degrees of deuteric alteration as shown by the formation of secondary phases such as: titanite, allanite, hydro-zircon, calcite, chlorite, quartz and cryptocrystalline SiO2. On the basis of their respective mineralogy: the VL4 and VL5 dykes are classified as pseudoleucite-phlogopite lamproite; VL2 and VL3 dykes as pseudoleucite-amphibole-lamproite; and VL6, VL7 and VL8 as pseudoleucite-phlogopite-amphibole-lamproite. VL10 is extensively altered but contains fresh euhedral apatite microphenocrysts together with pseudomorphs after leucite and is classified as a pseudoleucite-apatite-(phlogopite?) lamproite. The mineralogy of the Vattikod lamproite dykes is compared with that of the Ramadugu, Somavarigudem and Yacharam lamproite dykes which also occur in the Ramadugu lamproite field. The lamproites from the Eastern Dharwar Craton are considered as being possible expressions of ancient subduction-related alkaline magmatism along the Eastern Ghats mobile belt.

Middle Miocene volcanic activity in the Afyon volcanic province (eastern part of Western Anatolia) is characterized by multistage potassic and ultrapotassic alkaline volcanic successions. The volcanism is generally related to the northward subduction of the African plate beneath the Eurasian Plate. In Afyon, the Middle Miocene volcanic products consist of melilite leucitite, tephriphonolite, trachyte, basaltic–trachyandesite, phonolite, phonotephrite, tephriphonolite and lamproite rocks. Near-surface emplacement and relatively quiescent subaerial eruptions of lamproitic magma produced different emplacement forms such as dome/plug-shaped bodies and lava flows, showing variation in volume and texture. The mineralogical constituents of the lamproites are sanidine, olivine (77 < Mg no. < 81), phlogopite (74 < Mg no. < 78), K-richterite, clinopyroxene (74 < Mg no. < 78), with accessory apatite, calcite and opaque minerals. Afyon lamproites resemble Mediterranean-type Si-rich lamproites. Their compositional range is 50–52 wt% SiO2, 4–8 wt% MgO, and they display a typical lamproitic affinity. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns exhibit enrichment in LREE relative to HREE ((La/Yb)CN=15.3–17.0). They show extreme enrichment in LILE relative to primitive mantle values and troughs of Nb and Ti. The lamproites give a range of high initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios and low 143Nd/144Nd ratios. The geochemical and isotopic characteristics suggest that lamproitic magma is derived from highly metasomatized mantle. The enrichment history may include metasomatic events related to subduction, as in other active orogenic areas of the Mediterranean.

Lamproite dykes that cross-cut Middle Jurassic Karoo-related flood basalts in Vestfjella, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica, have been dated at 158.7±1.6 Ma by 40Ar/39 Ar incremental heating of phlogopite. Compared to most lamproites, these dykes are unusually low in SiO2 (40.09–40.18 wt%) and high in CaO (12.35–16.24 wt%) and P2O5 (3.03–3.81 wt%). They have broad affinities to spatially and temporally related group II kimberlites of southern Africa, but the geochemically closest correlatives are CaO- and P2O5-rich diopside madupitic lamproites from Leucite Hills, USA. The Kjakebeinet lamproites are notably high in incompatible elements, show negative initial εNd values (−6.0, −6.7) and positive initial εSr values (+14, +17) with TDM model ages of c. 1.1 Ga, and probably record melting of metasomatized subcontinental lithospheric mantle beneath western Dronning Maud Land. Their emplacement records the youngest recognized magmatic event in the region, coincides with the proposed second and final stage of Gondwana breakup between Africa and Antarctica, and may be associated with deep-seated coast-parallel strike-slip faulting in Dronning Maud Land. Survival of old, easily fusible lithospheric mantle material 20 Ma after the eruption of voluminous flood basalt magmas suggests that the latter were emplaced within narrow zones of lithospheric thinning and that the source of lamproites remained largely intact between these zones.

Calc-alkaline lamprophyres are porphyritic dyke-rocks, richer in amphibole, biotite, ultramark elements (Mg, Cr, Ni) and incompatible elements (K, F, P, Rb, Sr, Zn, Nb, Ba, REE, Th, U) than other rocks of comparable colour index (35–67) or % SiO2 (46–57). Field and petrological criteria are suggested for identifying them uniquely. New average compositions, based on some 600 screened analyses, confirm the chemical variability but possible heteromorphism of vogesites, kersantites, spessartites and some minettes. Calc-alkaline lamprophyres probably crystallise from volatile-rich, crystal-laden fluids. Microdioritic ‘porphyrites’, K-rich syenites and quartz-feldspar porphyries commonly form from these fluids by acidic hybridisation, and more rarely by in situ differentiation. Calc-alkaline lamprophyres have close compositional equivalents among, for example, shonkinites and absarokites, but not among kimberlites or common plutonie or volcanic rocks. They are compositionally more ‘crustal’ than lamproites and leucitites, despite some overlap. They are far more widespread than other K-rich or alkaline rocks. Three genetic petrological associations are confirmed: with calc-alkaline granitoid plutons (A), with shoshonitic volcanic and subvolcanic suites (B), and with appinite—breccia-pipe complexes (C). Most calc-alkaline lamprophyres, from association A, perhaps form by crustal modification of primary lamproitic or leucititic magmas; a very few, carrying rare mantle-type xenoliths, may represent relatively unmodified, but otherwise similar, primary magmas. Those of association B may form merely by volatile enrichment of shoshonitic magmas during subvolcanic crystallisation. Different origins for minettes in these associations are suggested by compositional differences, revealed by discriminant analysis.
