The nucleation and growth of silica nanoparticles in supersaturated geothermal waters was simulated using a flow-through geothermal simulator system. The effect of silica concentration ([SiO2]), ionic strength (IS), temperature (T) and organic additives on the size and polydispersity of the forming silica nanoparticles was quantified. A decrease in temperature (58 to 33°C) and the addition of glucose restricted particle growth to sizes <20 nm, while varying [SiO2] or ISdid not affect the size (30—35 nm) and polydispersity (±9 nm) observed at 58°C. Conversely, the addition of xanthan gum induced the development of thin films that enhanced silica aggregation.

The hot springs that emerge at 46 °C in the centre of Bath Spa, Somerset, are unique in the UK. The four other thermal springs in Britain are also sourced in the Carboniferous Limestone, but they emerge at significantly lower temperatures (20 to 28 °C). Bath is situated in a region of low geothermal gradient (about 20 °C/km depth) in a geological setting that seems an unlikely place for hot springs. Why then are these the only hot springs in Britain, and why are they confined to such a small (20 × 80 m) area? The explanation presented here involves a sequence of geological events involving Triassic dissolution and Pleistocene permafrost that is unique to central Bath.

The discovery of new specimens of Palaeonitella cranii (Kidston & Lang) Pia in the Early Devonian Rhynie chert permits the classification of this charophyte alga. This relatively small charophyte is composed of multicellular furcating branchlets with antheridia attached to the parent plant by a pedicel. The non-calcified gyrogonites, which are not seen in life position, are composed of six sinistrally spiralling cells and have six coronula cells arranged in a single layer around an apical pore.

Because the oogonia of P. cranii have six sinistrally spiralling cells and an apical pore, Palaeonitella has been assigned to the Palaeocharaceae. The shape and form of the oogonia is reminiscent of the extant Chareae, but the morphology of the thalli is indicative of the Nitelleae. This suggests that P. cranii, although retaining some characteristics of the Nitelleae, has some of the characteristics of the Chareae, supporting existing molecular studies which place the Nitelleae at the base of the Characeae.

Palaeonitella cranii inhabited the freshwater alkaline pools and streams which formed on sinter aprons created by hot spring activity. Extant charophytes exist in a similar environment (pH 8·66–8·9, temperature 25–30°C in summer) in pools and channels fed by hot springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA.

Hydrothermal alteration at Rhynie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is concentrated along a fault zone, which juxtaposes surface deposits and the mineralised feeder zone to the Rhynie hotspring system. Mineralisation consists of breccias and veins filled with quartz, chert, calcite, K-feldspar and pyrite. Associated pervasive alteration comprises a high-temperature K-feldsparquartz-illite facies (formed at 250–350°C), a medium-temperature mixed layered illite/smectitequartz-K-feldspar-chlorite-calcite facies (formed at 150–200°C) and a low-temperature mixed layered illite/smectite-chlorite-calcite facies (formed at 100 to +150°C). The fluids responsible for mineralisation were mainly moderate- to high-temperature (Th =91–360°C), low-salinity (<0·2 to 2·9 wt.% NaCl eq.) H2O-NaCl-heated meteoric fluids comparable to modern and ancient hot-spring systems. The migration of these fluids was mainly restricted to a major fault zone bounding the Devonian basin. Fluids responsible for mineralisation, alteration and cementation elsewhere in the basin were low-temperature (Th 57 to 161°C), low- to high-salinity (<0·2 to 18 wt.% NaCl eq.) H2O-NaCl fluids, which resemble basinal brines.

Modern, silica-precipitating hot springs, like those found in the Taupo Volcanic Zone (TVZ) on the North Island of New Zealand, are natural laboratories for assessing microbial silicification. Many of the silicified microbes found in the siliceous sinters of these spring systems seem to be life-like replicas of the original microbes. Such preservation reflects the fact that many of the microbes are replaced and encrusted by opal-A before they are destroyed by desiccation and decay. The taxonomic fidelity of these silicified microbes depends on the preservation potential of those features which are needed to identify them. For example, identification of extant cyanobacteria, relies on as many as 37 different features, most of which are not preserved by silicification.

In the hot-spring systems of the TVZ, characterisation of cyanobacteria which have been replaced and encrusted by opal-A is typically restricted to colony morphology, the length, diameter and morphology of the filament, and the presence/absence of septa, branching or a sheath. In many cases, description is limited to a subset of these parameters. Such a limited set of morphological characteristics severely impedes identifications in terms of extant taxa. The physical changes which accompany the stepwise diagenetic progression from opal-A to opal-CT ± opal-C to microcrystalline quartz may lead to further degradation of the silicified microbes and the loss of more taxonomically important features. Clearly, considerable care must be taken when trying to name silicified microorganisms and make palaeoenvironmental inferences.

Magnetic and resistivity geophysical surveys conducted across the only known exposure of the East Kirkton Limestone have produced new information upon its extent. This is important to determine because of its unique faunal assemblage and possible hot spring deposition, suggesting a potential for precious metal mineralisation. Magnetic anomalies are attributed to basalts within the Bathgate Hills Volcanic Formation. Modelling of the magnetic data demonstrates a general dip to the west of about 25°, and the presence of significant local faulting. Modelling of vertical electrical sounding data shows the East Kirkton sequence (the limestone and associated beds) to be a low resistivity layer within the more highly resistive volcanic sequence. The East Kirkton sequence is seen to deepen to the west, and also to the north probably by faulting. Therefore the present exposure is the only near surface occurrence of the East Kirkton Limestone locally, but within the area of the survey no lateral limits to the formation are observed.

The Viséan sequence at East Kirkton was deposited in a shallow lake, set within a richly vegetated landscape formed of volcanic cones a few hundred metres high. There was little volcanic activity, however, while the lake existed, and the many tuff horizons within the sequence were washed in during weathering. The lake may have been generally cool, though of unusual water chemistry, as a result of which the spherulitic East Kirkton Limestone precipitated. At times, however, water temperatures may have risen sharply through localised hot-spring activity; both factors deterred ‘normal’ aquatic life.

The bulk of the preserved biota consists of plants (permineralisations and compressions) and dominantly land-living animals, including the oldest terrestrial tetrapods (amphibians and reptiliomorphs), large terrestrial-aquatic eurypterids, the first harvestman and rare millipedes. All these animals lived close to the lake, in a fire-prone forest dominated by gymnosperms and pteridosperms.

At a late stage in the history of the lake, deposition of spherulitic limestones was replaced by black shales, bearing a ‘standard’ Oil-Shale fish fauna, suggesting that the isolated lake had linked with a larger fish-bearing water body. This is coupled with a shift to a lycopod-dominated flora and may indicate a climatic change to wetter conditions. Finally the lake silted up with tuff, ending an existence of only a few tens of thousands of years.
