Self-sealing is becoming a necessary function in sustainable systems for enhancing materials lifetime and improving system resilience. In this context, plants are prime models as they have developed various concepts. Moreover, implementing self-sealing into engineering applications is becoming more feasible with the advent of programmable materials. That is because these materials are able to implement simple algorithms by locally and globally processing information and adapting to changing conditions. However, the transfer of bio-inspired system functions into technological applications is tedious. It requires an intimate understanding of the selected biological models and the technological problem. To support the transfer of concepts and principles, we propose easy-to-read flow charts as a common language for biologists and engineers. Describing the functions of biological models and their underlying functional principles as process flow diagrams, allows to convert detailed biological insights into sequential step-wise algorithms, which turns the focus on building blocks necessary to achieve specific functions. We present a first set of flow charts for selected plant models exhibiting different self-sealing mechanisms based on hydraulics, mechanical instabilities, and sap release. For these plant-inspired control flows, we identified technical statements to classify metamaterial mechanisms and unit cells, which represent possible solutions for the steps in the algorithms for sealing procedures in future technical applications. A common language of flow charts will simplify the transfer of functional principles found in plant models into technological applications. Programmable materials expand the available design space of materials, putting us within reach to implement self-sealing functions inspired by plants.

We conducted a 9-d seismic experiment in October 2015 at Laohugou Glacier No. 12. We identified microseismic signals using the short-term/long-term average trigger algorithm at four stations and classified them as long and short-duration events based on waveform, frequency, duration and magnitude characteristics. Both categories show systematical diurnal trends. The long-duration events are low-frequency tremor-like events that mainly occurred during the daytime with only several events per day. These events lasted tens of seconds to tens of minutes and are likely related to resonance of daytime meltwater. The dominant short-duration events mostly occurred during the night time with a peak occurrence frequency of ~360 h−1. Their short-duration (<0.2 s), high frequency (20–100 Hz) and dominance of Rayleigh waves are typical of events for near-surface crack opening. A strong negative correlation between the hourly event number and temperature change rate suggests that the occurrence of night-time events is controlled by the rate of night-time cooling. We estimated the near-surface tensile stress due to thermal contraction at night to be tens of kilopascals, which is enough to induce opening of surface cracks with pre-existing local stress concentrations, although we cannot exclude the effect of refreezing of meltwater produced during the day.

Internal cracks caused by high temperature or excessive moisture during maize (Zea mays L.) kernel development were characterized, and their effects on kernel quality were assessed. Pre-harvest stress cracks are often located near the middle of the kernel along the embryo axis, but they were also detected in other positions, irrespective of the shape of the kernel. X-ray analysis enabled visualisation of stress cracks that are invisible to the human eye and, therefore, gave a better estimate of the percentage of cracks. However, low temperature scanning electron microscopy of the surface of milled kernels revealed small cracks not noticed by visual or X-ray inspection. All kernels tested in this way had a crack of some sort in the endosperm tissue. Cracks were also frequent in the scutellum, but rare in the embryo axis. Endosperm cracks followed the boundary of the starch granules, but did not extend into the pericarp tissue. In contrast to external cracks caused by mechanical impact, pre-harvest internal stress cracks generally are not detrimental to germination and vigour. However, if the crack is located inside or perpendicular to the embryo axis, it may affect the quality of the kernel, probably by impeding nutrient translocation to the embryo.

The mechanixcal behavior of W/Cu multilayers with periods ranging from 24 down to 3 nm prepared by ion beam sputtering was analyzed using a method combining X-ray diffraction and tensile testing, and instrumented indentation. Cracks perpendicular to the tensile axis observed by optical microscopy were generated in the films under the largest applied tensile stresses. These cracks may appear in the multilayer while W layers are still in a compressive stress state. Elastic modulus and hardness values were extracted from nano-indentation data. Crack initiation and elastic constants were observed to depend on the period of these multilayers.

Self-organised criticality of the crust appears to make deterministic earthquake prediction of time, place and magnitude of individual large earthquakes inherently impossible. This closes one line of approach to mitigating earthquake hazards. This paper suggests that a viable alternative to earthquake prediction is monitoring the build-up of stress before a large earthquake can occur. A new understanding of rock deformation allows stress changes to be monitored with seismic shear-wave splitting (seismic birefringence). With a suitable monitoring installation, this would allow the stochastic proximity of impending earthquakes to be recognised so that earthquakes could be forecast in the sense of recognising that crustal deformation was preparing for a large earthquake. Such stress-forecasting is not prediction, but, in many circumstances, a possible forecast crescendo of increasing urgency is exactly what is needed to best mitigate hazard to life and property.
