The circle transfer $Q\Sigma (LX_{hS^1})_+ \to QLX_+$ has appeared in several contexts in topology. In this note, we observe that this map admits a geometric re-interpretation as a morphism of cobordism categories of 0-manifolds and 1-cobordisms. Let 𝒞1(X) denote the one-dimensional cobordism category and let Circ(X) ⊂ 𝒞1(X) denote the subcategory whose objects are disjoint unions of unparametrized circles. Multiplication in S1 induces a functor Circ(X) → Circ(LX), and the composition of this functor with the inclusion of Circ(LX) into 𝒞1(LX) is homotopic to the circle transfer. As a corollary, we describe the inclusion of the subcategory of cylinders into the two-dimensional cobordism category 𝒞2(X) and find that it is null-homotopic when X is a point.

In this note, we collect various properties of Seifert homology spheres from the viewpoint of Dehn surgery along a Seifert fiber. We expect that many of these are known to various experts, but include them in one place, which we hope will be useful in the study of concordance and homology cobordism.

For stable degree 0 operations, and also for additive unstable operations of bidegree (0, 0), it is known that the centre of the ring of operations for complex cobordism is isomorphic to the corresponding ring of connective complex K-theory operations. Similarly, the centre of the ring of BP operations is the corresponding ring for the Adams summand of p-local connective complex K-theory. Here we show that, in the additive unstable context, this result holds with BP replaced by BP〈n⌰ for any n. Thus, for all chromatic heights, the only central operations are those coming from K-theory.

Based on the algebraic cobordism theory of Levine and Morel, we develop a theory of algebraic cobordism modulo algebraic equivalence.

We prove that this theory can reproduce Chow groups modulo algebraic equivalence and the semi-topological K0-groups. We also show that with finite coefficients, this theory agrees with the algebraic cobordism theory.

We compute our cobordism theory for some low dimensional varieties. The results on infinite generation of some Griffiths groups by Clemens and on smash-nilpotence by Voevodsky and Voisin are also lifted and reinterpreted in terms of this cobordism theory.

In this paper we prove a realizability theorem for Quinn’s mapping cylinder obstructions for stratified spaces. We prove a continuously controlled version of the s-cobordism theorem which we further use to prove the relation between the torsion of an h-cobordism and the mapping cylinder obstructions. This states that the image of the torsion of an h-cobordism is the mapping cylinder obstruction of the lower stratum of one end of the h-cobordism in the top filtration. These results are further used to prove a theorem about the realizability of end obstructions.

We show that any differentiable involution on a closed manifold whose fixed point set is a disjoint union of odd-dimensional real projective spaces must be a bounding involution.
