Perinatal malnutrition is a critical cause of diseases in offspring. Based on the different rates of organ development, we hypothesised that malnutrition at varying early life stages would have a differential impact on cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and older adults. This study sought to assess the long-term impact of exposure to the 1959–1961 Great Chinese Famine (GCF) during early developmental periods on risks of cardiovascular diseases in the late middle-aged offspring. A total 6, 662 individuals, born between 1958 and 1964, were divided into six groups according to the birth date. The generalised line model was used to control age and estimate differences with 95% confidence interval (CI) in blood pressure. Binary logistic regression was applied to evaluate the association between famine exposure and cardiovascular diseases. Compared to the unexposed late middle-aged persons, blood pressure was elevated in the entire gestation exposure group, regardless of postnatal exposure to GCF. Increased blood pressure was also found in the female offspring exposed to GCF during early and middle gestation. The early-childhood exposure was associated with the risk of bradycardia in the offspring. The risks of vertebral artery atherosclerosis were elevated in GCF famine-exposed groups except first trimester exposed group. The chronic influence of GCF in early life periods was specific to the developmental timing window, sexesand organs, suggesting an essential role of interactions among multiple factors and prenatal malnutrition in developmentally “programming” cardiovascular diseases.

The present systematic review and meta-analysis sought to evaluate the effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) supplementation on cardiovascular risk factors in patients at risk of CVD. Relevant studies were obtained by searching the PubMed, SCOPUS and Web of Science databases (from inception to January 2023). Weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% CI were pooled using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity, sensitivity analysis and publication bias were reported using standard methods. A pooled analysis of 14 randomised controlled trials (RCT) with 17 effect sizes revealed that CLA supplementation led to significant reductions in body weight (WMD: −0·72 kg, 95% CI: −1·11, −0·33, P < 0·001), BMI (WMD: −0·22 kg/m2, 95% CI: −0·44, −0·00, P = 0·037) and body fat percentage (BFP) (WMD: −1·32 %, 95% CI: −2·24, −0·40, P = 0·005). However, there was no effect on lipid profile and blood pressure in comparison with the control group. In conclusion, CLA supplementation may yield a small but significant beneficial effect on anthropometric indices in patients at risk of CVD. Moreover, CLA seems not to have adverse effects on lipid profiles and blood pressure in patients at risk of CVD. It should be noted that the favourable effects of CLA supplementation on anthropometric variables were small and may not reach clinical importance.

High dietary salt intake is a known risk factor for hypertension. However, Australians continue to consume excessive amounts of salt. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers, enablers and strategies to reduce salt in a sample of Australian adults with hypertension. This was a qualitative study. Participants were asked a set of open-ended questions during focus groups conducted between October 2020 and April 2021. Sessions were recorded and transcribed. Using an inductive approach, the transcript data from the focus groups were thematically analysed. This involved checking accuracy, becoming familiar with the data, coding responses based on questions, identifying themes through common patterns and validating themes by grouping similar questions that represented the data and study aim effectively. Thirty-one adults (55 % females) with high blood pressure participated in the focus group discussions. Participants demonstrated good knowledge of high blood pressure risk factors but lacked an understanding of recommended salt intake levels and sources of hidden salt. Challenges in reducing salt intake included the limited availability of low-salt commercial foods. Participants suggested improved food labelling and the use of technology-based interventions to promote healthier choices. Findings highlight the need for behavioural interventions, policy reforms and collaborations between the government, food industries and health organisations to address high salt intake in the population.

Diet is a contributing factor to CVD risk, but how diet quality changes over the long term and contributes to CVD risk is less well studied. Diet data were analysed from parents and offspring from the Princeton Lipid Research Study (24-h recall in the 1970s; Block FFQ in 1998). Diet quality was assessed using an 8-point Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension nutrient-based scoring index, including a new method for scoring in children, as well as examining twelve key macro/micronutrients. Outcomes included blood glucose, blood pressure, serum lipids and BMI. The analysis included 221 parents (39 % male, mean age 38·9 ± 6·5 at baseline and 66·6 ± 6·6 at follow-up) and 606 offspring (45 % male, 11·9 ± 3·2 at baseline and 38·5 ± 3·6 at follow-up). Parents’ Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension score increased slightly from baseline to follow-up (1·4 ± 1·0 and 2·1 ± 1·3, respectively, P < 0·001), while offspring remained consistent (1·6 ± 0·9 and 1·6 ± 1·1, respectively, P = 0·58). Overall, the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension score, adjusted for age, race, sex and BMI, was not significantly associated with any examined outcomes. Of the macro/micronutrients at follow-up, saturated and total fat were associated with increased diabetes and dyslipidaemia in parents, while the inverse was seen with niacin. Among offspring, niacin was associated with lower rates of hypertension and dyslipidaemia. In conclusion, no relationship was detected between Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension adherence and disease outcomes. However, both saturated fat and niacin were associated with components of CVD risk, highlighting the need for improved diet quality overall.

The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet is highly effective in controlling blood pressure (BP). Although Na restriction is not a primary focus within the DASH diet, it is recommended that it be added to control BP. Therefore, we aimed to systematically review the characteristics and BP-lowering effects of Na-restricted DASH diet interventions. We searched thirteen databases, namely, MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, KoreaMed, KISS, KMbase, RISS, CINAHL, Scopus, ClinicalTrials.gov, Grey Literature Report, OpenGrey and PQDT Global, for articles published through May 2023. The randomised controlled trials assessing the BP-lowering effect of the Na-restricted DASH diet in adults aged 18 years and older were included. The study protocol was registered in the PROSPERO registry (CRD42023409996). The risk of bias in the included studies was also assessed. Nine articles were included in this review. Interventions were categorised into three types: feeding, provision and education, and the study results were compared by intervention type. BP was significantly reduced in two of the three feeding studies, one of the three provisional studies and none of the educational studies. In eight studies, effect sizes varied among both systolic BP (–7·7 to −2·4) and diastolic BP (–8·3 to 0·1). Six studies showed an overall high risk of bias. In conclusion, Na-restricted DASH may have beneficial effects on BP control. Additionally, compared with control interventions, feeding interventions appeared to have a greater BP-lowering effect. Further high-quality studies are needed to improve the quality of the evidence.

Blood pressure (BP) is influenced by both genetics and diet. Dietary management of hypertension includes increasing potassium-rich foods while reducing sodium intakes. Dietary sodium and potassium intakes can be measured objectively using urinary sodium and urinary potassium, with lower urinary sodium to potassium ratios associated with lower BP(1). Understanding the interplay between diet and genetics may be useful in treating hypertension and determining which individuals may receive an outsized benefit from lowering their sodium potassium ratio. This study aims to investigate whether identifying genetic risk for hypertension could be utilised to identify individuals who may benefit most from lowering sodium intake and increasing potassium intake. UK Biobank cohort participants (n = 296,475) with data on genotype, BP and spot urinary sodium and potassium data were used. Diet quality was assessed using Oxford WebQ. Biologically directed genetic scores for BP were constructed for pathways related to sodium/potassium biology (pharmagenic enrichment scores [PES]), as well as traditional polygenic risk scores (PRS). A gene-by-environment effect between urinary electrolytes, diet quality and PRS on BP were tested. Genetic risk, diet quality and urinary electrolytes independently correlated with BP. Urinary sodium had larger BP increasing effects amongst individuals who had high genetic risk in sodium/potassium pathways than those with comparatively lower genetic risk. Higher diet quality had a small effect on reducing BP in baseline PRS models, but this did not remain significant in the full model. Polygenic scores for BP personalised to individual sodium/potassium biology (PES) could be used to identify individuals who may receive an outsized benefit from a personalised sodium/potassium dietary intervention. These findings may inform future precision and personalised dietary advice for the management of hypertension.

Hypertension, characterised by elevated blood pressure (BP), continues to be a major global public health problem. It is defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP (DBP) ≥90 mmH(1) and is the leading risk factor for cardiovascular diseases(2). Nutritional metabolomics (Nutrimetabolomics) presents an objective approach to explore the interplay between diet and health outcomes(3). Through analysis of intermediate molecules and metabolic byproducts, metabolomic profiles can objectively reflect an individual’s dietary intake and assess variations in metabolism(3). To date, no review has been conducted that investigates the relationship between diet, metabolites and BP regulation. This systematic review aimed to identify and synthesise findings of human dietary feeding intervention studies that have examined the role of metabolites in BP regulation. A comprehensive search was conducted in November 2022 across EMBASE, Medline, CINAHL, PsychINFO, Scopus and Cochrane databases. Search terms were defined using a combination of keywords, including “metabolome”, “diet”, and “blood pressure”. All included intervention studies explored the dietary metabolome from food provision, meals or supplements to a comparator or control intervention and, examined the relationship between dietary-related metabolites and BP in humans and published in English. The initial search identified 1,109 studies, with a final six studies meeting all eligibility criteria and included in the final review. Metabolites were identified in urine (n = 4), plasma (n = 2), or faeces (n = 1). Various analytical techniques were employed, including H-NMR, LC-MS, and GC-MS, while majority of studies used untargeted metabolomics (n = 4). Among included studies, five reported a significant association between individual metabolites and BP or change in BP. These investigations emphasised dietary patterns as the primary focus of analysis. In contrast, one study revealed no relationship between the investigated metabolites and BP. However, this particular study evaluated the impact of a single food product rather than dietary patterns. In total, 39 metabolites were linked to BP, with 36 associated with SBP and 25 with DBP. Several super-pathways involved in blood pressure regulation were identified, across metabolism of amino acids, carbohydrates, cofactors, vitamins, lipids, nucleotides, peptides, and xenobiotics. Within these, 17 distinct sub-pathways were delineated. The only metabolite found to have a significant relationship with BP measures across multiple studies was N-Acetylneuraminate. In one study, it showed a relationship with DBP, while another study linked it to a decrease in both 24-hour DBP and SBP. No other metabolites were consistently replicated between studies. Nutrimetabolomics appears to be a promising field in evaluation of diet and BP reduction. However, further research is required to understand which metabolites influence BP regulation.

Including nuts in the diet has been associated with improvements in cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors including high blood pressure (BP) and hyperlipidaemia (1–2). However, few studies have investigated if the same benefits exist for medicated and unmedicated populations. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of nut intake on BP and lipids, with a sub-analysis evaluating response differences according to BP and lipid-lowering medication usage. MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus and Web of Sciences databases were searched for randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of longer than 3 weeks duration that assessed the effects of whole tree nuts or peanuts on BP and lipid responses. The American Diabetes Association Quality Criteria checklist was used to assess the risk of bias, and studies with a negative rating were removed from the meta-analysis. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted, with subgroup analyses performed based on medication use (medicated, unmedicated, unreported, and mixed-use). Inter-study heterogeneity was estimated using the I2 test statistic. Data from 107 articles describing 98 studies (61 parallel, and 37 cross-over designs) were included in the meta-analysis. Overall, significant benefits of nut consumption were observed for triglycerides (TG) (mean difference [MD]: −0.11 mmol/L, 95% confidence intervals [CI]: −0.16, −0.06, p < 0.01, I2: 32.95%), total cholesterol (TC) (MD: −0.15 mmol/L, 95% CI: −0.22, −0.08, p < 0.01, I2: 61.84%), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (MD: −0.12 mmol/L, 95% CI: −0.19, −0.06, p < 0.01, I2: 52.7%), but not high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, systolic BP, or diastolic BP. Among unmedicated populations, nut intake resulted in a significant decrease in TG (MD: −0.16 mmol/L, 95% CI: −0.30, −0.03, I2: 75.93%), and TC (MD: −0.21 mmol/L, 95% CI: −0.39, −0.03, I2: 86.59%), while in those with unreported medication use, there were significant decreases in TG (MD: −0.08 mmol/L, 95% CI: −0.15, −0.01, I2: 0%), TC (MD: −0.15 mmol/L, 95% CI: −0.22, −0.07, I2: 0%) and LDL-C (MD: −0.12 mmol/L, 95% CI: −0.19, −0.06, I2: 0.44%). No significant effects were observed for BP and lipids in the mixed medication group. While there were significant improvements in lipid profiles overall with tree nuts and peanuts consumption, we observed no benefits for BP. Furthermore, significant beneficial effects on lipids were only observed in those with unreported and no medication use. Few studies investigated effects in medicated participants only (n = 1 study for lipids), and the precise proportion of medication use within the mixed medicated group remains unclear. Consequently, it remains uncertain whether the lipid-lowering properties of consuming nuts remain when hyperlipidaemia is managed with medications. Further studies are needed to explore the influence of medication in combination with dietary approaches on responses to additional CVD risk factors.

Obesity is an established risk factor for hypertension, but the mechanisms are only partially understood. We examined whether body mass index (BMI)-related DNA methylation (DNAm) variation would mediate the association of BMI with blood pressure (BP). We first conducted a genomewide DNA methylation analysis in monozygotic twin pairs to detect BMI-related DNAm variation and then evaluated the mediating effect of DNAm on the relationship between BMI and BP levels using the causal inference test (CIT) method and mediation analysis. Ontology enrichment analysis was performed for CpGs using the GREAT tool. A total of 60 twin pairs for BMI and systolic blood pressure (SBP) and 58 twin pairs for BMI and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were included. BMI was positively associated with SBP (β = 1.86, p = .0004). The association between BMI and DNAm of 85 CpGs reached p < 1×10–4 level. Eleven BMI-related differentially methylated regions (DMRs) within LNCPRESS1, OGDHL, RNU1-44P, NPHS1, ECEL1P2, LLGL2, RNY4P15, MOGAT3, PHACTR3, and BAI2 were found. Of the 85 CpGs, 9 mapped to C10orf71-AS1, NDUFB5P1, KRT80, BAI2, ABCA2, PEX11G and FGF4 were significantly associated with SBP levels. Of the 9 CpGs, 2 within ABCA2 negatively mediated the association between BMI and SBP, with a mediating effect of −0.24 (95% CI [−0.65, −0.01]). BMI was also positively associated with DBP (β = 0.60, p = .0495). The association between BMI and DNAm of 193 CpGs reached p < 1×10−4 level. Twenty-five BMI-related DMRs within OGDHL, POU4F2, ECEL1P2, TTC6, SMPD4, EP400, TUBA1C and AGAP2 were found. Of the 193 CpGs, 33 mapped to ABCA2, ADORA2B, CTNNBIP1, KDM4B, NAA60, RSPH6A, SLC25A19 and STIL were significantly associated with DBP levels. Of the 33 CpGs, 12 within ABCA2, SLC25A19, KDM4B, PTPRN2, DNASE1, TFCP2L1, LMNB2 and C10orf71-AS1 negatively mediated the association between BMI and DBP, with a total mediation effect of −0.66 (95% CI [−1.07, −0.30]). Interestingly, BMI might also negatively mediate the association between the DNAm of most CpG mediators mentioned above and BP. The mediating effect of DNAm was also found when stratified by sex. In conclusion, DNAm variation may partially negatively mediate the association of BMI with BP. Our findings may provide new clues to further elucidate the pathogenesis of obesity to hypertension and identify new diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets for hypertension.

The effects of purslane consumption on anthropometric measurements and blood pressure have been studied in numerous experiments. However, the research findings conflict with one another. In order to assess the impact of purslane on weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), this meta-analysis was carried out. Up until February 2023, PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and the reference lists of the identified pertinent randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were all searched. The random-effects model was used to calculate the effect size and then to describe it as a weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) (CRD42023427955). The systematic review was able to incorporate seven RCTs. Meta-analysis showed that purslane significantly decreased body weight (WMD): −0⋅73 kg, 95 % confidence interval (CI): −1⋅37, −0⋅09, P=0⋅025), BMI (WMD: −0⋅35 kg/m2, 95 % CI: −0⋅64, −0⋅07, P=0⋅016), and SBP (WMD: −3⋅64 mmHg, 95 % CI: −6⋅42, −0⋅87, P = 0⋅01), and for WC, there was no discernible effect (WMD: −0⋅86 cm; 95 % CI, −1⋅80 to 0⋅07; P = 0⋅06) and DBP (WMD: −0⋅36 mmHg; 95 % CI, −1⋅75 to 1⋅03; P = 0⋅61). Purslane consumption, especially in participants with a BMI of <30, might play a role in decreasing SBP, body weight, BMI, and WC. Purslane consumption significantly reduced body weight, BMI, and SBP; however, WC and DBP did not experience a reduction. More investigation is needed to verify the impact of purslane consumption on anthropometric parameters and blood pressure.

Gestational obesity has major negative impacts on both mothers and their offspring. More than two-thirds of women of reproductive age in the United States are overweight and/or obese. We previously reported that the source of protein in the maternal diet influences the phenotype of offspring born to normal-weight dams. However, whether it has the same effect in obese mothers was unclear. The casein- and soya protein-based diets were fed to obese pregnant Wistar rats and compared for their effects on characteristics of the metabolic syndrome in male offspring. Dams randomized to either a casein (CD) or soya protein (SD) diet (n 12). Pups were weaned to either a CD or SD for 16 weeks. Offspring of SD dams had higher birthweight (P < 0⋅01). Glucose metabolism was not altered at birth but fasting blood glucose (FBG) (P < 0⋅02), insulin (P < 0⋅0002), insulin/glucose ratio (P < 0⋅03), and HOMA-IR index (P < 0⋅0002) were higher in offspring of SD dams at week 17. The pulse rate was higher in dams (P < 0⋅03). Food intake and body weight of offspring were affected by interactive effects of time and dams’ diet (P < 0⋅05). Food intake was not influenced by maternal diet, but it was higher in pups weaned to SD dams (P < 0⋅03) The results of this study indicate that although the source of protein in the maternal diet is still an influencing factor in the outcome of the pregnancy in obese mothers, gestational obesity may mask this effect possibly by imposing general detrimental effects on measured parameters regardless of the source of protein in maternal diet.

Systolic blood pressure (SBP) is significantly associated with body composition in children and adolescents. However, which one of the components of body composition is the dominant contributor to SBP in children and adolescents remains unclear. We, therefore, aimed to determine the dominant contributor to SBP among components of body composition in a large cohort of American children and adolescents derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey with cross-sectional analysis. In total, 13 618 children and adolescents (median age 13 years; 6107 girls) with available data on whole-body dual-emission X-ray absorptiometry measurements were included. Multiple linear regression showed that SBP was associated with higher total fat-free mass in boys (β = 0·49, P < 0·001) and girls (β = 0·47, P < 0·001) and with higher total fat mass only in boys (β = 0·12, P < 0·001) after adjustment for covariates. When taking fat distribution into consideration, SBP was associated with higher trunk fat mass (boys: β = 0·28, P < 0·001; girls: β = 0·15, P < 0·001) but negatively associated with leg fat mass (Boys: β = −0·14, P < 0·001; Girls: β = −0·11, P < 0·001), in both boys and girls. Dominance analysis showed that total fat-free mass was the dominant contributor to SBP (boys: 49 %; girls: 55·3 %), followed by trunk fat mass (boys: 32·1 %; girls: 26·9 %); leg fat mass contributed the least to SBP in boys (18·9 %) and girls (17·8 %). Our findings indicated that total fat-free mass was not only associated with SBP but also the most dominant contributor to SBP variation in American children and adolescents.

Research suggests that adiponectin, leptin, and genetic polymorphisms such as catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) genotype may play an integral role in blood pressure status and thereby cardiovascular health. This is an area especially important for women who are post-menopause; however, the current literature investigating these associations is limited. This study was a cross-sectional secondary analysis of baseline data (N 237) from the Minnesota Green Tea Trial (MGTT). The current study explored the relationships between plasma adiponectin, leptin, and COMT genotype on blood pressure measures. Plasma adiponectin and leptin were obtained after an overnight fast of at least 10 h and were measured by the radioimmunoassay method. The relationships were analysed using multiple linear regression after adjusting for potential confounders. Effect modifications by age, body mass index (BMI) category, blood pressure category, antihypertensive medication use, and COMT genotype were also investigated. The majority of participants were non-Hispanic (97⋅9 %) and Caucasian (94⋅9 %). Mean (sd) age and BMI were 60⋅7 (5⋅0) years and 28⋅2 (2⋅9) kg/m2, respectively. After adjustment for confounding variables, neither plasma adiponectin, plasma leptin nor COMT genotype was associated with systolic or diastolic blood pressure measures. The results of stratified analyses also did not reveal any significant interactions or associations. Based on the findings of this study, which utilised more rigorous statistical methods than previous research, neither adiponectin, leptin nor COMT genotype play a role in blood pressure measures in women who are post-menopause.

Postmenopausal women have augmented pressure wave responses to low-intensity isometric handgrip exercise (IHG) due to an overactive metaboreflex (postexercise muscle ischaemia, PEMI), contributing to increased aortic systolic blood pressure (SBP). Menopause-associated endothelial dysfunction via arginine (ARG) and nitric oxide deficiency may contribute to exaggerated exercise SBP responses. L-Citrulline supplementation (CIT) is an ARG precursor that decreases SBP, pulse pressure (PP) and pressure wave responses to cold exposure in older adults. We investigated the effects of CIT on aortic SBP, PP, and pressure of forward (Pf) and backward (Pb) waves during IHG and PEMI in twenty-two postmenopausal women. Participants were randomised to CIT (10 g/d) or placebo (PL) for 4 weeks. Aortic haemodynamics were assessed via applanation tonometry at rest, 2 min of IHG at 30 % of maximal strength, and 3 min of PEMI. Responses were analysed as change (Δ) from rest to IHG and PEMI at 0 and 4 weeks. CIT attenuated ΔSBP (−9 ± 2 v. −1 ± 1 mmHg, P = 0·006), ΔPP (−5 ± 2 v. 0 ± 1 mmHg, P = 0·03), ΔPf (−6 ± 2 v. −1 ± 1 mmHg, P = 0·01) and ΔPb (−3 ± 1 v. 0 ± 1 mmHg, P = 0·02) responses to PEMI v. PL. The ΔPP during PEMI was correlated with ΔPf (r = 0·743, P < 0·001) and ΔPb (r = 0·724, P < 0·001). Citrulline supplementation attenuates the increase in aortic pulsatile load induced by muscle metaboreflex activation via reductions in forward and backward pressure wave amplitudes in postmenopausal women.

Aging plays a crucial role in the mechanisms of the impacts of genetic and environmental factors on blood pressure and serum lipids. However, to our knowledge, how the influence of genetic and environmental factors on the correlation between blood pressure and serum lipids changes with age remains to be determined. In this study, data from the Chinese National Twin Registry (CNTR) were used. Resting blood pressure, including systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), and fasting serum lipids, including total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides (TGs) were measured in 2378 participants (1189 twin pairs). Univariate and bivariate structural equation models examined the genetic and environmental influences on blood pressure and serum lipids among three age groups. All phenotypes showed moderate to high heritability (0.37–0.59) and moderate unique environmental variance (0.30–0.44). The heritability of all phenotypes showed a decreasing trend with age. Among all phenotypes, SBP and DBP showed a significant monotonic decreasing trend. For phenotype-phenotype pairs, the phenotypic correlation (Rph) of each pair ranged from −0.04 to 0.23, and the additive genetic correlation (Ra) ranged from 0.00 to 0.36. For TC&SBP, TC&DBP, TG&SBP and TGs&DBP, both the Rph and Ra declined with age, and the Ra difference between the young group and the older adult group is statistically significant (p < .05). The unique environmental correlation (Re) of each pair did not follow any pattern with age and remained relatively stable with age. In summary, we observed that the heritability of blood pressure was affected by age. Moreover, blood pressure and serum lipids shared common genetic backgrounds, and age had an impact on the phenotypic correlation and genetic correlations.

Hypertension remains a public health issue in Cameroon, though lifestyle and dietetic measures are the main approaches for the prevention and management of hypertension. The present study aimed at evaluating the impact of a Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet using local foodstuffs on the status of hypertensive patients at the Ngaoundere Regional Hospital. A case–control study was carried out with 160 hypertensive patients divided into two groups, a test and a control group. A food questionnaire was used to evaluate the food habits of patients and design the sheet of the DASH diet to provide a maximum of 2000 kcal/d. The DASH diet was administered to the test group (eighty-eight patients), while the control group (seventy-two patients) consumed their normal diet. Both groups were followed up for 8 weeks. The systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP, DBP), body mass index (BMI), triglycerides, HDL-c, LDL-c and total-cholesterol levels of patients of the two groups were measured before and after the intervention. The results indicate that the DASH diet improves all the markers of hypertension in the test group with significant decreases in BMI, SBP, DBP, LDL-c and total-cholesterol. Patients of the control group had fourteen and seven times more risk of having increased systolic and diastolic pressures, respectively, and are thus exposed to hypertension complications. The DASH diet established in this study is therefore effective for the management of hypertension.
