  • Resilience through total defence: Towards a shared security culture in the Nordic–Baltic region?

  • This article investigates the defence policies of the Nordic and Baltic countries from the perspective of shared security culture. To that end, the article analyses conceptualisations of total defence and resilience in a comparative perspective and inquires into existing and prospective regional cooperation in this area, in order to determine to what degree there exists a common security culture based on shared norms and identities and manifested in practices of security cooperation. The study, which draws on 19 interviews with civil servants from the eight states of the region, shows that while there is fertile ground for a shared security culture to emerge, thus far, due to variations in conceptualisations, threat perceptions, and interaction preferences, only three Nordic states show clear signs of a shared security culture. The study contributes to existing research by situating the concept of resilience in (total) defence discourses; by expanding the theoretical work on security culture to an international context; and by offering a unique empirical account of the process of (re)building total defence policies in a region crucial to European security.

  • Summary

    The ability of business to meaningfully engage with those groups and individuals who it affects, and is affected by – its stakeholders – is a critical component in humanity’s pursuit of net zero, sustainable development for all. This chapter explores and unpacks stakeholder approaches to corporate sustainability and responsible business.

    It starts off by framing the big picture of why a stakeholder approach – one that accounts for the interdependencies between business, society and nature – is increasingly pivotal during the uncertain and ambiguous times of the 2020s. Following on, the chapter introduces the core features of a stakeholder approach to corporate sustainability. The third section looks at different stakeholder models. It illustrates stakeholder model development in business settings over time, as well as the influence of the cultural context, such as the one found in the Nordic countries, to foster a stakeholder mindset in business.

    The fourth and final section considers stakeholder theory in the age of sustainability, with particular coverage given to the implications of new Information Communication Technologies (ICT) for successful stakeholder engagement strategies.

    Weaved in throughout this chapter, and parallel to the online case study, are a number of examples designed to illustrate how a stakeholder approach manifests in the ‘real world’.

  • Summary

    Chapter 8, the Epilogue, sketches out how public banks have responded to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in its earliest stages. The chapter makes two interrelated points, points which have run through the book so far. First, it exposes the societal dangers of subordinating control of the financial system and its capacity to the private sector and to financialised profit imperatives. Second, it highlights the benefits of protecting public banking capacity in order to make time available when needed. It focuses on the responses of the six public banks discussed in the book: the China Development Bank, the Nordic Investment Bank, the Indian National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), the American Bank of North Dakota, the German KfW, and the Costa Rican Banco Popular y de Desarrollo Comunal.

    To describe the dietary composition of the New Nordic Diet (NND) and to compare it with the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR)/Danish Food-based Dietary Guidelines (DFDG) and with the average Danish diet.

    Design

    Dietary components with clear health-promoting properties included in the DFDG were included in the NND in amounts at least equivalent to those prescribed by the DFDG. The quantities of the other dietary components in the NND were based on scientific arguments for their potential health-promoting properties together with considerations of acceptability, toxicological concerns, availability and the environment. Calculations were conducted for quantifying the dietary and nutrient composition of the NND.

    Results

    The NND is characterized by a high content of fruits and vegetables (especially berries, cabbages, root vegetables and legumes), fresh herbs, potatoes, plants and mushrooms from the wild countryside, whole grains, nuts, fish and shellfish, seaweed, free-range livestock (including pigs and poultry) and game. Overall, the average daily intakes of macro- and micronutrients in the NND meet the NNR with small adjustments based on evidence of their health-promoting properties.

    Conclusions

    The NND is a prototype regional diet that takes palatability, health, food culture and the environment into consideration. Regionally appropriate healthy diets could be created on similar principles anywhere in the world.

    Diet has a significant impact on health, and ensuring that the population eats a healthy diet remains a public health challenge. Research is needed in order to improve the palatability of a healthy diet and make it attractive to the consumer. It has also been suggested that dietary recommendations should be tailored to regional conditions. The OPUS (Optimal well-being, development and health for Danish children through a healthy New Nordic Diet) project investigates whether it is possible to develop a healthy New Nordic Diet (NND) that is palatable, environmentally friendly and based on foods originating from the Nordic region. The present paper describes the overall guidelines for the NND, developed and investigated in the multidisciplinary, 5-year OPUS research project. All guidelines are described in relation to the key principles: health, gastronomic potential and Nordic identity, and sustainability.

    Results

    The NND is described by the overall guidelines: (i) more calories from plant foods and fewer from meat; (ii) more foods from the sea and lakes; and (iii) more foods from the wild countryside. These overall guidelines result in a set of proposed dietary components which will be presented in a subsequent paper.

    Conclusions

    Both the guidelines and the diet are composed taking the potential health-promoting properties and Nordic identity of the NND into account, as well as concern for environmental issues and gastronomic potential.

  • The sequence-specific amplified polymorphism (S-SAP) method was used to genotype 198 Nordic bread wheat landraces and cultivars from the 19th to the 21st centuries. It was shown that the Sukkula-9900-LARD retrotransposon primer was highly suitable for resolving closely related wheat materials. Cluster analysis was generally consistent with pedigree information and revealed a clear separation for growth habit but not for countries. A principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) showed a separation into different time periods (before 1910, 1910–1969 and 1970–2003). These results are consistent with the breeding history and pedigree information, indicating that little hybridization has occurred between winter and spring wheat, in contrast to frequent exchange of germplasm between the Nordic countries. Estimates of gene diversity, the PCoA results, and changes in band frequencies across time indicate that plant breeding has led to substantial genetic shifts in Nordic wheat. Diversity was reduced through selections from landraces during the early 20th century, followed by a period of relatively lower genetic diversity, and a subsequent increase and net gains in diversity from the late 1960s onwards through the use of exotic germplasm. Thus, an anticipated loss of overall genetic diversity was found to be negligible, although allele losses have occurred at specific loci.
