  • Summary

    The new millennium started on an anxious note, although the much-feared millennium bug proved uneventful. What followed, though, was a series of crises until 2020 involving financial meltdown, a nuclear disaster, and a pandemic. Japan and Germany, like the rest of the world, emerged bruised and battered by the first and last of these calamities. Japan suffered the middle one on its own, although Fukushima also galvanised Germany’s opposition to nuclear power. This in turn reinforced the European country’s longstanding overreliance on Russian gas, a folly laid bare when Russia invaded Ukraine in spring 2022. Taken together, the crises exposed some of the vulnerabilities and deficiencies of Japanese and German capitalisms as they have evolved since the Second World War. But they also highlighted key sources of strength, not least resilience and adaptability in the face of extreme adversity. On balance, the two countries therefore weathered the crises better than most.

  • Objective:

    Those affected by the Fukushima disaster have reported a decline in well-being. Although listening to music is expected to promote well-being, no study has revealed this association after a disaster. This study’s objective is to clarify the association between well-being and music listening habits in the aftermath of the Fukushima disaster.

    Methods:

    A self-report online survey was conducted with 420 residents who were asked to rate 5 types of well-being: life satisfaction, positive emotion, negative emotion, psychological distress, and mental health changes after the Fukushima disaster. To meet inclusion criteria, the participants had to be research company monitors between the ages of 20 and 59 and living in Fukushima Prefecture at the time of the survey. Their music listening habits (eg, recent favorite music) and demographic information (eg, evacuation experience due to the disaster: 20.7%) were also collected. We examined the associations between well-being and music listening habits by univariate analysis followed by a logistic analysis with an adjustment for covariates.

    Results:

    Positive emotions were significantly associated with any type of music listening habits that participants practiced. We also observed gender and age differences between the associations.

    Conclusion:

    This study provides foundational insights into the role of music in improving post-disaster well-being.

  • After the Fukushima accident in 2011, approximately 160000 residents were forced to evacuate the site. The evacuation order has since been lifted and the Japanese government is now advancing a return strategy. As the return proceeds, deterioration of health indicators and measures in the municipalities around the nuclear power plant remains unchanged. This affected the local governments’ coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccination drive during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Japan, municipalities keep track of residents’ information and implement health-related measures. However, many residents evacuated the town, thus leaving their registered residence. With long-term evacuation and few returnees, it was difficult for government officials to constantly monitor the residents’ health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to maintain residents’ records and ensure that they receive health services without any gap. This report aimed to provide implications for post-disaster community health services and support as observed during the COVID-19 vaccination program at a disaster site.
