A novel planar printed phase shifter design is proposed in this paper. The design is developed with microstrip–conductor-backed coplanar waveguide– microstrip (MP–CBCPW–MP) transition line with different defected ground structures (DGS). The differential phase shift can be controlled by altering the DGS dimensions. Three prototypes with DGS dimensions 5 × 10, 10 × 20, and 10 × 30 mm2, are employed at the finite ground plane to achieve 5°, 20°, and 30° shift in phase respectively and are validated with the phase delay relation. The prominent effect of the transition region is to confine the field area. The resonance is at 700 MHz with a bandwidth of 400 MHz (0.4–0.8 GHz). The proposed phase shifter can be used for broadcasting applications. The proposed MP–CBCPW–MP transition phase shifter design with DGS is simulated, fabricated, and measured to analyze its performance.

A low specific absorption rate (SAR) reconfigurable multiband coplanar waveguide fed planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) is presented in this paper. Different numbers of meander-turn-shaped slots are etched on the PIFA radiating plate to excite new resonant frequencies. Extra resonant frequencies are created by increasing the number of meander-turn-shaped slots for different wireless communication applications. A new independent resonant frequency is created by etching a coupled slot within the ground plane for the upper WLAN. A PIN diode switch is used to reconfigure the fundamental resonant frequency from the LTE band 11 to band 8 with a total of 63% size reduction compared with the original PIFA size. Furthermore, the SAR in the human head is investigated using the Hugo voxel model in CST Microwave Studio. The volume of the antenna is 22 × 30 mm2 over a 35 × 50 mm2 ground plane, which is suitable for handheld devices.

A novel wideband transition from finite ground-conductor backed-CPW (FG-CB-CPW) to microstrip has been demonstrated in 8–23 GHz band. Proposed transition provides a very low-loss alterative to microstrip/coplanar lines at higher frequencies. Simulated results are detailed for both alumina and silicon substrates. Simulated results are validated on alumina substrate providing more than 100% bandwidth with maximum insertion loss of around 1.5 dB in the targeted frequency range. Comparison of the results along with design procedures is detailed in this article.
