If X is a topological space and Y is any set, then we call a family $\mathcal {F}$ of maps from X to Y nowhere constant if for every non-empty open set U in X there is $f \in \mathcal {F}$ with $|f[U]|> 1$, i.e., f is not constant on U. We prove the following result that improves several earlier results in the literature.

If X is a topological space for which $C(X)$, the family of all continuous maps of X to $\mathbb {R}$, is nowhere constant and X has a $\pi $-base consisting of connected sets then X is $\mathfrak {c}$-resolvable.

We present a result about $G_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FF}}$ covers of a Hausdorff space that implies various known cardinal inequalities, including the following two fundamental results in the theory of cardinal invariants in topology: $|X|\leqslant 2^{L(X)\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}(X)}$ (Arhangel’skiĭ) and $|X|\leqslant 2^{c(X)\unicode[STIX]{x1D712}(X)}$ (Hajnal–Juhász). This solves a question that goes back to Bell, Ginsburg and Woods’s 1978 paper (M. Bell, J.N. Ginsburg and R.G. Woods, Cardinal inequalities for topological spaces involving the weak Lindelöf number, Pacific J. Math. 79(1978), 37–45) and is mentioned in Hodel’s survey on Arhangel’skiĭ’s Theorem (R. Hodel, Arhangel’skii’s solution to Alexandroff’s problem: A survey, Topology Appl. 153(2006), 2199–2217).

In contrast to previous attempts, we do not need any separation axiom beyond $T_{2}$.

Let $L\left( X \right)$ be the free locally convex space over a Tychonoff space $X$. Then $L\left( X \right)$ is a $k$-space if and only if $X$ is a countable discrete space. We prove also that $L\left( D \right)$ has uncountable tightness for every uncountable discrete space $D$.

We extend the scope of B. Shapirovskii's results on the order of $\pi $-bases in compact spaces and answer some questions of V. Tkachuk.

A locally compact semilattice with open principal filters is a zero-dimensional scattered space. Cardinal invariants of locally compact and compact semilattices with open principal filters are investigated. Structure of topological semilattices on the one-point Alexandroff compactification of an uncountable discrete space and linearly ordered compact semilattices with open principal filters are researched.

It is known that the only topological invariants P for which anti(P) = anti2 (P), anti( ) denoting Bankston's total negation operator, are those which are determined purely by the cardinality of the underlying point-set. We examine equations of the form antin (P) = antin (not P), reaching similar conclusions for n ≤ 2 but weaker ones for n > 3. A corresponding investigation for total negation within a constraint is initiated.

The notion of pointwise cleavability is introduced. We clarify those results concerning cleavability which can be or can not be generalized to the case of pointwise cleavability.

The importance of compactness in this theory is shown. Among other things we prove that t, ts, πx, the property to be Fréchet-Urysohn, radiality, biradiality, bisequentiality and so on are preserved by pointwise cleavability on the class of compact Hausdorff spaces.

This presentation concerns the relation of chain conditions on a space X, with the weights of compact sets in Cp(X), generalizing up to the class of dσ-bounded spaces, or stable spaces. In the last case, stronger results are obtained for Corson compact subsets of CP(X).

In this paper some cardinal inequalities for Urysohn spaces are established. In particular the following two theorems are proved:

(i)If where [A]θ denotes the θ-closed hull of A, i.e., the smallest θ-closed subset of X containing A;

(ii), where aL(X, X) is the smallest cardinal number m such that for every open cover of X there is a subfamily for which

Let A and A denote the classes of ordinal spaces with the order topology and Σ-product spaces of the two point discrete space respectively. Characterizations are given in terms of ultrafiIters of clopen sets of those O-dimensional Hausdorff topological spaces that can be embedded homeomorphically as a closed subspace of a topological product of either spaces from the class Λ or the class Δ. Both classes consist of spaces that are ω0-bounded. An example is given of a O-dimensional Hausdorff ω0-bounded space that cannot be homeomorphically embedded as a closed subset of a product of spaces from either Λ or Δ, answering a question of R. G. Woods.

In [A], Arhangel'skii showed that for any T2 space X, |X|≤2L(x)χ(x), where L(X) is the Lindelöf degree of X and χ(X) is the character of X.

In [B], Bell, Ginsburg and Woods improved this result, assuming normality, by showing that for T4 spaces X, |X|≤2wL(x)χ(x), where wL(X) is the weak Lindelöf degree of X.

We introduce below a new cardinal function aL(X), the almost Lindelöf degree of X, which agrees with L(X) on T3 spaces, but which is often smaller than L(X) on T2 spaces, and show that for T2 spaces X,

A completely regular HausdorfT space is extra countably compact if every infinite subset of βX has an accumulation point in X. It is a theorem of Comfort and Waiveris that if X either an F-space or realcompact (topologically complete), then there is a set {Pξ:ξ<2C} of extra countably compact (countably compact) subspaces of αX such that Pξ ∩ Pξ = X, for ξ<ξ'<2C. Comfort and Waiveris conjecture that in all three cases, the spaces may be chosen pairwise non-homeomorphic. We prove this conjecture, using D- limits and weak P-points. We also give a partial solution to another question asked by Comfort and Waiveris.

If X is a topological space then exp X denotes the space of non-empty closed subsets of X with the Vietoris topology and λX denotes the superextension of X Using Martin's axiom together with the negation of the continuum hypothesis the following is proved: If every discrete subset of exp X is countable the X is compact and metrizable. As a corollary, if λX contains no uncountable discrete subsets then X is compact and metrizable. A similar argument establishes the metrizability of any compact space X whose square X × X contains no uncountable discrete subsets.

A subset of a topological space is called discrete iff every point in the space has a neighborhood which meets the set in at most one point. Discrete sets are useful for decomposing the images of certain maps and for generalizing closed maps. All discrete sets are closed iff the space is T1. As a result of characterizing discrete and countably discrete maps, theorems due to Vaĭnšteĭn and Engelking are extended to these maps.

The existence of a first countable Lindelöf extension L of an uncountable discrete space D for which L-D is countable is considered. Assuming CH, such extensions exist; however it is also consistent that no such spaces exist, as follows from MA + ¬ CH
