This article is concerned with the problem of determining an unknown source of non-potential, external time-dependent perturbations of an incompressible fluid from large-scale observations on the flow field. A relaxation-based approach is proposed for accomplishing this, which makes use of a nonlinear property of the equations of motions to asymptotically enslave small scales to large scales. In particular, an algorithm is introduced that systematically produces approximations of the flow field on the unobserved scales in order to generate an approximation to the unknown force; the process is then repeated to generate an improved approximation of the unobserved scales, and so on. A mathematical proof of convergence of this algorithm is established in the context of the two-dimensional Navier–Stokes equations with periodic boundary conditions under the assumption that the force belongs to the observational subspace of phase space; at each stage in the algorithm, it is shown that the model error, represented as the difference between the approximating and true force, asymptotically decreases to zero in a geometric fashion provided that sufficiently many scales are observed and certain parameters of the algorithm are appropriately tuned.

We investigate an inverse boundary value problem of determination of a nonlinear law for reaction-diffusion processes, which are modeled by general form semilinear parabolic equations. We do not assume that any solutions to these equations are known a priori, in which case the problem has a well-known gauge symmetry. We determine, under additional assumptions, the semilinear term up to this symmetry in a time-dependent anisotropic case modeled on Riemannian manifolds, and for partial data measurements on ${\mathbb R}^n$.

Moreover, we present cases where it is possible to exploit the nonlinear interaction to break the gauge symmetry. This leads to full determination results of the nonlinear term. As an application, we show that it is possible to give a full resolution to classes of inverse source problems of determining a source term and nonlinear terms simultaneously. This is in strict contrast to inverse source problems for corresponding linear equations, which always have the gauge symmetry. We also consider a Carleman estimate with boundary terms based on intrinsic properties of parabolic equations.

We consider Calderón's problem for the connection Laplacian on a real-analytic vector bundle over a manifold with boundary. We prove a uniqueness result for this problem when all geometric data are real-analytic, recovering the topology and geometry of a vector bundle up to a gauge transformation and an isometry of the base manifold.

In this paper, we study the Dirichlet problem for systems of mean value equations on a regular tree. We deal both with the directed case (the equations verified by the components of the system at a node in the tree only involve values of the unknowns at the successors of the node in the tree) and the undirected case (now the equations also involve the predecessor in the tree). We find necessary and sufficient conditions on the coefficients in order to have existence and uniqueness of solutions for continuous boundary data. In a particular case, we also include an interpretation of such solutions as a limit of value functions of suitable two-players zero-sum games.

Being able to characterise objects at low frequencies, but in situations where the modelling error in the eddy current approximation of the Maxwell system becomes large, is important for improving current metal detection technologies. Importantly, the modelling error becomes large as the frequency increases, but the accuracy of the eddy current model also depends on the object topology and on its materials, with the error being much larger for certain geometries compared to others of the same size and materials. Additionally, the eddy current model breaks down at much smaller frequencies for highly magnetic conducting materials compared to non-permeable objects (with similar conductivities, sizes and shapes) and, hence, characterising small magnetic objects made of permeable materials using the eddy current at typical frequencies of operation for a metal detector is not always possible. To address this, we derive a new asymptotic expansion for permeable highly conducting objects that is valid for small objects and holds not only for frequencies where the eddy current model is valid but also for situations where the eddy current modelling error becomes large and applying the eddy approximation would be invalid. The leading-order term we derive leads to new forms of object characterisations in terms of polarizability tensor object descriptions where the coefficients can be obtained from solving vectorial transmission problems. We expect these new characterisations to be important when considering objects at greater stand-off distance from the coils, which is important for safety critical applications, such as the identification of landmines, unexploded ordnance and concealed weapons. We also expect our results to be important when characterising artefacts of archaeological and forensic significance at greater depths than the eddy current model allows and to have further applications parking sensors and improving the detection of hidden, out-of-sight, metallic objects.

This paper is concerned with the increasing stability of the inverse source problem for the elastic wave equation with attenuation in three dimensions. The stability estimate consists of the Lipschitz type data discrepancy and the high frequency tail of the source function, where the latter decreases as the upper bound of the frequency increases. The stability also shows exponential dependence on the attenuation coefficient. The ingredients of the analysis include Carleman estimates and time decay estimates for the elastic wave equation to obtain an exact observability bound, and the study of the resonance-free region and an upper bound of the resolvent in this region for the elliptic operator with respect to the complex frequency. The advantage of the method developed in this work is that it can be used to study the case of variable attenuation coefficient.

This paper is concerned with the resolution of an inverse problem related to the recovery of a function $V$ from the source to solution map of the semi-linear equation $(\Box _{g}+V)u+u^{3}=0$ on a globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifold $({\mathcal{M}},g)$. We first study the simpler model problem, where $({\mathcal{M}},g)$ is the Minkowski space, and prove the unique recovery of $V$ through the use of geometric optics and a three-fold wave interaction arising from the cubic non-linearity. Subsequently, the result is generalized to globally hyperbolic Lorentzian manifolds by using Gaussian beams.

We extend existing methods which treat the semilinear Calderón problem on a bounded domain to a class of complex manifolds with Kähler metric. Given two semilinear Schrödinger operators with the same Dirchlet-to-Neumann data, we show that the integral identities that appear naturally in the determination of the analytic potentials are enough to deduce uniqueness on the boundary up to infinite order. By exploiting the assumed complex structure, this information allows us to apply the method of stationary phase and recover the potentials in the interior as well.

The aim of this paper is to provide and numerically test in the presence of measurement noise a procedure for target classification in wave imaging based on comparing frequency-dependent distribution descriptors with precomputed ones in a dictionary of learned distributions. Distribution descriptors for inhomogeneous objects are obtained from the scattering coefficients. First, we extract the scattering coefficients of the (inhomogeneous) target from the perturbation of the reflected waves. Then, for a collection of inhomogeneous targets, we build a frequency-dependent dictionary of distribution descriptors and use a matching algorithm in order to identify a target from the dictionary up to some translation, rotation and scaling.

We consider the unique recovery of a non-compactly supported and non-periodic perturbation of a Schrödinger operator in an unbounded cylindrical domain, also called waveguide, from boundary measurements. More precisely, we prove recovery of a general class of electric potentials from the partial Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, where the Dirichlet data is supported on slightly more than half of the boundary and the Neumann data is taken on the other half of the boundary. We apply this result in different contexts including recovery of some general class of non-compactly supported coefficients from measurements on a bounded subset and recovery of an electric potential, supported on an unbounded cylinder, of a Schrödinger operator in a slab.

This article deals with numerical inversion for the initial distribution in the multi-term time-fractional diffusion equation using final observations. The inversion problem is of instability, but it is uniquely solvable based on the solution's expression for the forward problem and estimation to the multivariate Mittag-Leffler function. From view point of optimality, solving the inversion problem is transformed to minimizing a cost functional, and existence of a minimum is proved by the weakly lower semi-continuity of the functional. Furthermore, the homotopy regularization algorithm is introduced based on the minimization problem to perform numerical inversions, and the inversion solutions with noisy data give good approximations to the exact initial distribution demonstrating the efficiency of the inversion algorithm.

We consider the unique solvability of an inverse-source problem with integral transmitting condition for a time-fractional mixed type equation in rectangular domain where the unknown source term depends only on the space variable. The solution is based on a series expansion using a bi-orthogonal basis in space, corresponding to a non-self-adjoint boundary value problem. Under certain regularity conditions on the given data, we prove the uniqueness and existence of the solution for the given problem. The influence of the transmitting condition on the solvability of the problem is also demonstrated. Two different transmitting conditions are considered — viz. a full integral form and a special case. In order to simplify the bulky expressions appearing in the proof of our main result, we establish a new property of the recently introduced Mittag-Leffler type function in two variables.

We deal with the problem of determining an unknown part of the boundary of an electrical conductor that is inaccessible for external observation and where a corrosion process is going on. We obtain estimates of the size of this damaged region from above and below.

We extend the full wavefield modeling with forward scattering theory and Volterra Renormalization to a vertically varying two-parameter (velocity and density) acoustic medium. The forward scattering series, derived by applying Born-Neumann iterative procedure to the Lippmann-Schwinger equation (LSE), is a well known tool for modeling and imaging. However, it has limited convergence properties depending on the strength of contrast between the actual and reference medium or the angle of incidence of a plane wave component. Here, we introduce the Volterra renormalization technique to the LSE. The renormalized LSE and related Neumann series are absolutely convergent for any strength of perturbation and any incidence angle. The renormalized LSE can further be separated into two sub-Volterra type integral equations, which are then solved noniteratively. We apply the approach to velocity-only, density-only, and both velocity and density perturbations. We demonstrate that this Volterra Renormalization modeling is a promising and efficient method. In addition, it can also provide insight for developing a scattering theory-based direct inversion method.

Consider the time-harmonic acoustic scattering from an extended elastic body surrounded by a finite number of point-like obstacles in a fluid. We assume point source waves are emitted from arrayed transducers and the signals of scattered near-field data are recorded by receivers not far away from the scatterers (compared to the incident wavelength). The forward scattering can be modeled as an interaction problem between acoustic and elastic waves together with a multiple scattering problem between the extend solid and point scatterers. We prove a necessary and sufficient condition that can be used simultaneously to recover the shape of the extended elastic solid and to locate the positions of point scatterers. The essential ingredient in our analysis is the outgoing-to-incoming (OtI) operator applied to the resulting near-field response matrix (or operator). In the first part, we justify the MUSIC algorithm for locating point scatterers from near-field measurements. In the second part, we apply the factorization method, the continuous analogue of MUSIC, to the two-scale scattering problem for determining both extended and point scatterers. Numerical examples in 2D are demonstrated to show the validity and accuracy of our inversion algorithms.

The purpose of this paper is to numerically realize the inverse scattering scheme proposed in [19] of reconstructing complex elastic objects by a single far-field measurement. The unknown elastic scatterers might consist of both rigid bodies and traction-free cavities with components of multiscale sizes presented simultaneously. We conduct extensive numerical experiments to show the effectiveness and efficiency of the imaging scheme proposed in [19]. Moreover, we develop a two-stage technique, which can significantly speed up the reconstruction to yield a fast imaging scheme.

The first-order cross correlation and corresponding applications in the passive imaging are deeply studied by Garnier and Papanicolaou in their pioneer works. In this paper, the results of the first-order cross correlation are generalized to the second-order cross correlation. The second-order cross correlation is proven to be a statistically stable quantity, with respective to the random ambient noise sources. Specially, with proper time scales, the stochastic fluctuation for the second-order cross correlation converges much faster than the first-order one. Indeed, the convergent rate is of order , with 0 < α < 1. Besides, by using the stationary phase method in both homogeneous and scattering medium, similar behaviors of the singular components for the second-order cross correlation are obtained. Finally, two imaging methods are proposed to search for a target point reflector: One method is based on the imaging function, and has a better signal-to-noise rate; Another method is based on the geometric property, and can improve the bad range resolution of the imaging results.

We prove uniqueness for the Calderón problem with Lipschitz conductivities in higher dimensions. Combined with the recent work of Haberman, who treated the three- and four-dimensional cases, this confirms a conjecture of Uhlmann. Our proof builds on the work of Sylvester and Uhlmann, Brown, and Haberman and Tataru who proved uniqueness for $C^{1}$ -conductivities and Lipschitz conductivities sufficiently close to the identity.

We consider an inverse problem of determining unknown coefficients for a one-dimensional analogue of radiative transport equation. We show that some combination of the unknown coefficients can be uniquely determined by giving pulse-like inputs at the boundary and observing the corresponding outputs. Our result can be applied for determination of absorption and scattering properties of an optically turbid medium if the radiative transport equation is appropriate for describing the propagation of light in the medium.

In this paper, operator splitting scheme for dynamic reservoir characterization by binary level set method is employed. For this problem, the absolute permeability of the two-phase porous medium flow can be simulated by the constrained augmented Lagrangian optimization method with well data and seismic time-lapse data. By transforming the constrained optimization problem in an unconstrained one, the saddle point problem can be solved by Uzawas algorithms with operator splitting scheme, which is based on the essence of binary level set method. Both the simple and complicated numerical examples demonstrate that the given algorithms are stable and efficient and the absolute permeability can be satisfactorily recovered.
