Dualities of resolving subcategories of module categories over rings are introduced and characterized as dualities with respect to Wakamatsu tilting bimodules. By restriction of the dualities to smaller resolving subcategories, sufficient and necessary conditions for these bimodules to be tilting are provided. This leads to the Gorenstein version of both the Miyashita’s duality and Huisgen-Zimmermann’s correspondence. An application of resolving dualities is to show that higher algebraic K-groups and semi-derived Ringel–Hall algebras of finitely generated Gorenstein-projective modules over Artin algebras are preserved under tilting.

We construct a flat model structure on the category ${_{\mathcal {Q},\,R}\mathsf {Mod}}$ of additive functors from a small preadditive category $\mathcal {Q}$ satisfying certain conditions to the module category ${_{R}\mathsf {Mod}}$ over an associative ring $R$, whose homotopy category is the $\mathcal {Q}$-shaped derived category introduced by Holm and Jørgensen. Moreover, we prove that for an arbitrary associative ring $R$, an object in ${_{\mathcal {Q},\,R}\mathsf {Mod}}$ is Gorenstein projective (resp., Gorenstein injective, Gorenstein flat, projective coresolving Gorenstein flat) if and only if so is its value on each object of $\mathcal {Q}$, and hence improve a result by Dell'Ambrogio, Stevenson and Šťovíček.

In this paper, we prove that the lower triangular matrix category $\Lambda =\left [ \begin{smallmatrix} \mathcal{T}&0\\ M&\mathcal{U} \end{smallmatrix} \right ]$, where $\mathcal{T}$ and $\mathcal{U}$ are $\textrm{Hom}$-finite, Krull–Schmidt $K$-quasi-hereditary categories and $M$ is an $\mathcal{U}\otimes _K \mathcal{T}^{op}$-module that satisfies suitable conditions, is quasi-hereditary. This result generalizes the work of B. Zhu in his study on triangular matrix algebras over quasi-hereditary algebras. Moreover, we obtain a characterization of the category of the $_\Lambda \Delta$-filtered $\Lambda$-modules.

Let G denote a possibly discrete topological group admitting an open subgroup I which is pro-p. If H denotes the corresponding Hecke algebra over a field k of characteristic p, then we study the adjunction between H-modules and k-linear smooth G-representations in terms of various model structures. If H is a Gorenstein ring, we single out a full subcategory of smooth G-representations which is equivalent to the category of all Gorenstein projective H-modules via the functor of I-invariants. This applies to groups of rational points of split connected reductive groups over finite and over non-Archimedean local fields, thus generalizing a theorem of Cabanes. Moreover, we show that the Gorenstein projective model structure on the category of H-modules admits a right transfer. On the homotopy level, the right derived functor of I-invariants then admits a right inverse and becomes an equivalence when restricted to a suitable subcategory.

Let $R$ be a left coherent ring. It is proven that if an $R$-module $M$ has a finite FP-injective dimension, then the Gorenstein projective (resp. Gorenstein flat) dimension and the projective (resp. flat) dimension coincide. Also, we obtain that the pair ($\mathcal {GP},\, \mathcal {GP}^{\perp }$) forms a projective cotorsion pair under some mild conditions.

Building on the embedding of an n-abelian category $\mathscr {M}$ into an abelian category $\mathcal {A}$ as an n-cluster-tilting subcategory of $\mathcal {A}$ , in this paper, we relate the n-torsion classes of $\mathscr {M}$ with the torsion classes of $\mathcal {A}$ . Indeed, we show that every n-torsion class in $\mathscr {M}$ is given by the intersection of a torsion class in $\mathcal {A}$ with $\mathscr {M}$ . Moreover, we show that every chain of n-torsion classes in the n-abelian category $\mathscr {M}$ induces a Harder–Narasimhan filtration for every object of $\mathscr {M}$ . We use the relation between $\mathscr {M}$ and $\mathcal {A}$ to show that every Harder–Narasimhan filtration induced by a chain of n-torsion classes in $\mathscr {M}$ can be induced by a chain of torsion classes in $\mathcal {A}$ . Furthermore, we show that n-torsion classes are preserved by Galois covering functors, thus we provide a way to systematically construct new (chains of) n-torsion classes.

We present the concept of cotorsion pairs cut along subcategories of an abelian category. This provides a generalization of complete cotorsion pairs, and represents a general framework to find approximations restricted to certain subcategories. We also exhibit some connections between cut cotorsion pairs and Auslander–Buchweitz approximation theory, by considering relative analogs for Frobenius pairs and Auslander–Buchweitz contexts. Several applications are given in the settings of relative Gorenstein homological algebra, chain complexes, and quasi-coherent sheaves, as well as to characterize some important results on the Finitistic Dimension Conjecture, the existence of right adjoints of quotient functors by Serre subcategories, and the description of cotorsion pairs in triangulated categories as co-t-structures.

Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu to give a unification of properties in exact categories and extension-closed subcategories of triangulated categories. A notion of tilting pairs in an extriangulated category is introduced in this paper. We give a Bazzoni characterization of tilting pairs in this setting. We also obtain the Auslander–Reiten correspondence of tilting pairs which classifies finite $\mathcal {C}$-tilting subcategories for a certain self-orthogonal subcategory $\mathcal {C}$ with some assumptions. This generalizes the known results given by Wei and Xi for the categories of finitely generated modules over Artin algebras, thereby providing new insights in exact and triangulated categories.

In this paper, we introduce and study the Gorenstein relative homology theory for unbounded complexes of modules over arbitrary associative rings, which is defined using special Gorenstein flat precovers. We compare the Gorenstein relative homology to the Tate/unbounded homology and get some results that improve the known ones.

Balanced pairs appear naturally in the realm of relative homological algebra associated with the balance of right-derived functors of the Hom functor. Cotorsion triplets are a natural source of such pairs. In this paper, we study the connection between balanced pairs and cotorsion triplets by using recent quiver representation techniques. In doing so, we find a new characterization of abelian categories that have enough projectives and injectives in terms of the existence of complete hereditary cotorsion triplets. We also provide a short proof of the lack of balance for derived functors of Hom computed using flat resolutions, which extends the one given by Enochs in the commutative case.

We apply the Auslander–Buchweitz approximation theory to show that the Iyama and Yoshino's subfactor triangulated category can be realized as a triangulated quotient. Applications of this realization go in three directions. Firstly, we recover both a result of Iyama and Yang and a result of the third author. Secondly, we extend the classical Buchweitz's triangle equivalence from Iwanaga–Gorenstein rings to Noetherian rings. Finally, we obtain the converse of Buchweitz's triangle equivalence and a result of Beligiannis, and give characterizations for Iwanaga–Gorenstein rings and Gorenstein algebras.

Let $k$ be a commutative ring, let ${\mathcal{C}}$ be a small, $k$-linear, Hom-finite, locally bounded category, and let ${\mathcal{B}}$ be a $k$-linear abelian category. We construct a Frobenius exact subcategory ${\mathcal{G}}{\mathcal{P}}({\mathcal{G}}{\mathcal{P}}_{P}({\mathcal{B}}^{{\mathcal{C}}}))$ of the functor category ${\mathcal{B}}^{{\mathcal{C}}}$, and we show that it is a subcategory of the Gorenstein projective objects ${\mathcal{G}}{\mathcal{P}}({\mathcal{B}}^{{\mathcal{C}}})$ in ${\mathcal{B}}^{{\mathcal{C}}}$. Furthermore, we obtain criteria for when ${\mathcal{G}}{\mathcal{P}}({\mathcal{G}}{\mathcal{P}}_{P}({\mathcal{B}}^{{\mathcal{C}}}))={\mathcal{G}}{\mathcal{P}}({\mathcal{B}}^{{\mathcal{C}}})$. We show in examples that this can be used to compute ${\mathcal{G}}{\mathcal{P}}({\mathcal{B}}^{{\mathcal{C}}})$ explicitly.

We introduce the notion of a perfect path for a monomial algebra. We classify indecomposable non-projective Gorenstein-projective modules over the given monomial algebra via perfect paths. We apply the classification to a quadratic monomial algebra and describe explicitly the stable category of its Gorenstein-projective modules.

Let $R$ be a two-sided Noetherian ring, and let $M$ be a nilpotent $R$-bimodule, which is finitely generated on both sides. We study Gorenstein homological properties of the tensor ring $T_{R}(M)$. Under certain conditions, the ring $R$ is Gorenstein if and only if so is $T_{R}(M)$. We characterize Gorenstein projective $T_{R}(M)$-modules in terms of $R$-modules.

For any ring $R$, we show that, in the bounded derived category ${{D}^{b}}(\text{Mod}\,R)$ of left $R$-modules, the subcategory of complexes with finite Gorenstein projective (resp. injective) dimension modulo the subcategory of complexes with finite projective (resp. injective) dimension is equivalent to the stable category $\underline{\text{GP}}(\text{Mod}\,R)\,(resp.\overline{GI}(Mod\,R))$ of Gorenstein projective (resp. injective) modules. As a consequence, we get that if $R$ is a left and right noetherian ring admitting a dualizing complex, then $\underline{\text{GP}}(\text{Mod}\,R)$ and $\overline{\text{GI}}(\text{Mod}\,R)$ are equivalent.

Given a non-negative integer n and a complete hereditary cotorsion triple , the notion of subcategories in an abelian category is introduced. It is proved that a virtually Gorenstein ring R is n-Gorenstein if and only if the subcategory of Gorenstein injective R-modules is with respect to the cotorsion triple , where stands for the subcategory of Gorenstein projectives. In the case when a subcategory of is closed under direct summands such that each object in admits a right -approximation, a Bazzoni characterization is given for to be . Finally, an Auslander–Reiten correspondence is established between the class of subcategories and that of certain subcategories of which are -coresolving covariantly finite and closed under direct summands.

Given a complete hereditary cotorsion pair $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{Y})$, we introduce the concept of $(\mathcal{X}, \mathcal{X} \cap \mathcal{Y})$-Gorenstein projective modules and study its stability properties. As applications, we first get two model structures related to Gorenstein flat modules over a right coherent ring. Secondly, for any non-negative integer n, we construct a cofibrantly generated model structure on Mod(R) in which the class of fibrant objects are the modules of Gorenstein injective dimension ≤ n over a left Noetherian ring R. Similarly, if R is a left coherent ring in which all flat left R-modules have finite projective dimension, then there is a cofibrantly generated model structure on Mod(R) such that the cofibrant objects are the modules of Gorenstein projective dimension ≤ n. These structures have their analogous in the category of chain complexes.

Let $Q$ be a finite acyclic quiver, let $J$ be an ideal of $kQ$ generated by all arrows in $Q$, and let $A$ be a finite-dimensional $k$ -algebra. The category of all finite-dimensional representations of $\left( Q,\,{{J}^{2}} \right)$ over $A$ is denoted by $\text{rep}\left( Q,\,{{J}^{2}},\,A \right)$ . In this paper, we introduce the category $\text{exa}\left( Q,{{J}^{2}},A \right),$ which is a subcategory of $\text{rep}\left( Q,\,{{J}^{2}},\,A \right)$ of all exact representations. The main result of this paper explicitly describes the Gorenstein-projective representations in $\text{rep}\left( Q,\,{{J}^{2}},\,A \right)$, via the exact representations plus an extra condition. As a corollary, $A$ is a self-injective algebra if and only if the Gorenstein-projective representations are exactly the exact representations of $\left( Q,\,{{J}^{2}} \right)$ over $A$.

Let $R$ be a commutative ring. In this paper we study the behavior of Gorenstein homological dimensions of a homologically bounded $R$-complex under special base changes to the rings $R_{x}$ and $R/xR$, where $x$ is a regular element in $R$. Our main results refine some known formulae for the classical homological dimensions. In particular, we provide the Gorenstein counterpart of a criterion for projectivity of finitely generated modules, due to Vasconcelos.

We define model structures on a triangulated category with respect to some proper classes of triangles and give a general study of triangulated model structures. We look at the relationship between these model structures and cotorsion pairs with respect to a proper class of triangles on the triangulated category. In particular, we get Hovey's one-to-one correspondence between triangulated model structures and complete cotorsion pairs with respect to a proper class of triangles. Some applications are given.
