Summary
INTRODUCTION
Cricket is a massive sport. It dominates the attention of sports fans on the Indian subcontinent. It is a national obsession in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Nepal, as well as among these ethnic communities found in large numbers around the world, such as in the Arabian Peninsula. It is also popular in other regions of the former British Empire, such as southern Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean. Cricket remains the dominant sport of the English summer, despite the encroaching influence of football. To put the scale of the demand and interest in cricket into perspective, a 2019 match between India and Pakistan in the World Cup drew an estimated live broadcast audience of 1 billion. In comparison, the biggest live event in the US annual sporting calendar, the National Football League Super Bowl, attracts around 100 million domestic viewers and fewer than that number again in the rest of the world. Even the 2018 FIFA Football World Cup Final had an estimated average viewership of just over 500 million. In this context, there is a surprising lack of economic literature concerning cricket, at least when compared with the team sports most focused on by economists, such as baseball, basketball, association football and American football (Gregory-Smith, Paton & Sacheti 2019). Like these other sports, cricket is a setting that allows effective economic analysis, with implications not just for this sport, and others, but for our wider understanding of economic behaviour.
In this chapter, we focus on the oldest cricket league, the County Championship (henceforth the CC) in England and Wales. The CC is the premier domestic first-class cricket competition in England, with matches played over several days. The competition can be traced back to the eighteenth century in some form, but it officially began in 1890. From the first match to the most recent, we have complete data not only on final outcomes but also the specifics of what happened within those matches. Despite the increasing popularity of short-form cricket, the CC still makes up most of the professional cricket played in England each season. One reason why the CC is interesting for economists is that its rule makers have continuously tinkered with its design over the past 130 years.

This study identified factors affecting seniors’ ability to self-manage their health following an Emergency Department (ED) visit. Surveys (n = 380) completed by older adults and their caregivers in the ED assessed their understanding of information provided. Interviews (n = 51) completed with a participant subsample up to four weeks post-ED visit examined self-management factors. Perceived understanding of the information (“Yes, definitely”) received in the ED was greater at the time of the visit (91%) than at follow-up (71%). Patients reported self-management was influenced by communication with ED staff, understanding of post-discharge expectations and the health condition(s), caregiver availability, and various external factors. Caregivers also identified support for caregivers and patient resistance to recommendations. Senior-friendly strategies (e.g., recommendations in writing, confirmed understanding of recommendations), particularly those related to identifying those at risk and needing greater transitional supports, and greater access to and integration with community supports could enhance post-ED self-management.

We have rated eye color on a 3-point scale (1 = blue/grey, 2 = hazel/green, 3 = brown) in 502 twin families and carried out a 5–10 cM genome scan (400–757 markers). We analyzed eye color as a threshold trait and performed multipoint sib pair linkage analysis using variance components analysis in Mx. A lod of 19.2 was found at the marker D15S1002, less than 1 cM from OCA2, which has been previously implicated in eye color variation. We estimate that 74% of variance in eye color liability is due to this QTL and a further 18% due to polygenic effects. However, a large shoulder on this peak suggests that other loci affecting eye color may be telomeric of OCA2 and inflating the QTL estimate. No other peaks reached genome-wide significance, although lods > 2 were seen on 5p and 14q and lods >1 were additionally seen on chromosomes 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 17 and 18. Most of these secondary peaks were reduced or eliminated when we repeated the scan as a two locus analysis with the 15q linkage included, although this does not necessarily exclude them as false positives. We also estimated the interaction between the 15q QTL and the other marker locus but there was only minor evidence for additive [.dotmath] additive epistasis. Elaborating the analysis to the full two-locus model including non-additive main effects and interactions did not strengthen the evidence for epistasis. We conclude that most variation in eye color in Europeans is due to polymorphism in OCA2 but that there may be modifiers at several other loci.
