Summary
Epidemiologic studies consistently demonstrate an increased risk of severe maternal morbidity and mortality in multiple as opposed to singleton pregnancies. The exaggerated cardiovascular adaptation required to support more than one fetus may explain some of this morbidity while incorporating physiology into clinical management decisions may mitigate some of the risk. Balancing maternal risk with neonatal outcomes is central to obstetric management decisions including delivery timing and mode of delivery. Encouraging vaginal birth for women with cephalic-presenting first twins may reduce the risk of maternal morbidity but requires the involvement of an obstetrician with comfort with twin vaginal birth including breech extraction. Dedicated attention to maternal psychosocial state—particularly in the postpartum period—is an essential component of optimizing maternal outcomes in multifetal pregnancies. A uniform approach to management followed by tailored risk-appropriate care as clinical complexities arise is essential to optimize maternal outcomes in multifetal pregnancy.

In 2019 the Bar of Ireland Law Library launched an online exhibition detailing the first one hundred years of women in the law in Ireland and the first one hundred women called to the Irish Bar. The online exhibition coincided with the centenary celebrations of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 and a physical exhibition curated in collaboration with the Honorable Society of Kings Inns and the Law Society of Ireland. This article by Vanessa Curley and Sarah Foley explores the background to how Law Library staff became involved in creating historical exhibitions, the development of a digital archive of The Bar of Ireland and curating online exhibitions to complement this. It will also discuss the benefits of such activities to the Law Library service and the wider Bar of Ireland.

Simplicity of construction and operation are advantages of iTMC (ionic transition metal complex) OLEDs compared with multi-layer OLED devices. Unfortunately, lifetimes do not compare favorably with the best multi-layer devices. We have previously shown for Ru(bpy)3(PF6)2 based iTMC OLEDs that electrical drive produces emission-quenching dimers of the active species. We report evidence here that a chemical process may also be implicated in degradation of devices based on Ir(ppy)2(dtb-bpy)PF6 albeit by a very different mechanism. It appears that degradation of operating devices made with this Ir-based complex is related to current-induced heating of the organic layer, resulting in loss of the dtb-bpy ligand. (The dtb-bpy ligand is labile compared with the cyclometallated ppy ligands.) Morphological changes observed in electrically driven Ir(ppy)2(dtb-bpy)PF6 OLEDs provide evidence of substantial heating during device operation. Evidence from UV-vis spectra in the presence of an electric field as well as MALDI-TOF mass spectra of the OLED materials before and after electrical drive add support for this model of the degradation process.
