Aims.
There is convincing evidence that lower socioeconomic position is associated with increased risk of mental disorders. However, the mechanisms involved are not well understood. This study aims to elucidate the causal pathways between socioeconomic position and depression symptoms in South African adults. Two possible causal theories are examined: social causation, which suggests that poor socioeconomic conditions cause mental ill health; and social drift, which suggests that those with poor mental health are more likely to drift into poor socioeconomic circumstances.
Methods. The study used longitudinal and cross-sectional observational data on 3904 adults, from a randomised trial carried out in 38 primary health care clinics between 2011 and 2012. Structural equation models and counterfactual mediation analyses were used to examine causal pathways in two directions. First, we examined social causation pathways, with language (a proxy for racial or ethnic category) being treated as an exposure, while education, unemployment, income and depression were treated as sequential mediators and outcomes. Second, social drift was explored with depression treated as a potential influence on health-related quality of life, job loss and, finally, income.
Results. The results suggest that the effects of language on depression at baseline, and on changes in depression during follow-up, were mediated through education and income but not through unemployment. Adverse effects of unemployment and job loss on depression appeared to be mostly mediated through income. The effect of depression on decreasing income appeared to be mediated by job loss.
Conclusions. These results suggest that both social causation and social selection processes operate concurrently. This raises the possibility that people could get trapped in a vicious cycle in which poor socioeconomic conditions lead to depression, which, in turn, can cause further damage to their economic prospects. This study also suggests that modifiable factors such as income, employment and treatable depression are suitable targets for intervention in the short to medium term, while in the longer term reducing inequalities in education will be necessary to address the deeply entrenched inequalities in South Africa.

Biofouling: an historic and contemporary review of its causes, consequences and control in drinking water distribution systems

Biofouling in water distribution systems has, arguably, affected our lives for more than 3500 years. It may be defined as the undesirable accumulation of biotic matter on a surface, which can cause odour and taste problems, the deterioration of pipe materials and fittings and result in the discoloration of water. Early efforts to combat these problems included the use of sedimentation tanks, disinfection by silver ionization and cleaning of the distribution network. At the turn of the nineteenth century, rapid sand filtration and water disinfection became widely used and helped to reduce the organic and bacterial load in drinking water. A better understanding of the role and causes of biofouling in water distribution systems resulted in various legislations, which in turn have been a driving factor for improving or developing new water treatment methods, pipe materials, analytical techniques, etc. However, increasing requirements on water quality in the late twentieth century made water treatment and specific anti-corrosion and/or microbial control regimens insufficient as a means of solving the transportation problem owing to the heterogeneity of pipe materials and contamination from outside the distribution system. Furthermore, as drinking water passes through the mains it undergoes a series of quality changes owing to interactions with the pipe walls, bacteria and the sediment phase.
This review emphasizes the extent to which biofouling depends on interactions between microorganisms and (1) nutrients, (2) environmental conditions (temperature), (3) physicochemical processes (sedimentation, corrosion, disinfection) and (4) pipe material. A good knowledge of these complex interactions is necessary for implementing a successful biofouling control strategy.

A review of MeV-ion beam induced crystallization (IBIEC) and interfacial amorphization (IBIIA) in III-V compounds (GaAs, InAs, GaP, InP) is given. The kinetics of IBIEC and IBIIA is studied as a function of the temperature, the density of the displacements v, and the ion dose rate j. Reversal temperatures TR for IBIEC ↔ IBIIA transitions are determined for the different materials showing characteristic dependences on v and j. The IBIEC rate is shown to be controlled by point defect diffusion towards the a/c-interface and additionally modified by the interface structure. The suppression of microtwin and stacking fault formation during IBIEC is explained by the fact that the ion beam modifies the orientation dependence of the crystallization kinetics avoiding the disintegration and (111)-faceting of the (100)-interface. For all the compound materials investigated the IBIEC process is stopped above critical temperatures and doses. The capture of diffasing defects by crystallites growing in the amorphous layers is considered to be responsible for the stopping of the IBIEC interface. Ways are demonstrated to avoid stopping, to achieve complete epitaxial regrowth also of thick layers, and to minimize the generation of stable damage in the crystallized layers. The limited temperature ranges for undisturbed IBIEC and IBIIA in III/V-compounds are explained by low nucleation barriers and high growth rates both of crystallites and of amorphous zones.
