Till fabrics on the ridge above Barrington show a variety of preferred orientations and their origins are discussed. Not all the fabrics can be attributed to ice transport. Lowestoft and Gipping Tills are differentiated on their lithologies, fabrics, and erratics, and the contained heavy minerals and microfossils are also considered. Correlation of the associated solifluxion deposits with the sequence in Barrington Village has shown that the Hippopotamus-bearing Barrington Beds are not younger than the Hoxnian Interglacial (Elster/Saale) and may be considerable order.

An intrusive sequence of kentallenite-lamprophyre-granite is clearly indicated by cross-cutting relations at Kentallen. This sequence is the same as that recorded elsewhere in Argyll. It is suggested that the time gap between the intrusion of the kentallenite and of the lamprophyre is small compared with that between the intrusion of the lamprophyre and of the granite.

A soft chalky limestone or coccolith-marl, believed to form a submarine outcrop in the upper part of the continental slope off Brittany, consists largely of coccoliths, with subordinate quantities of foraminifera and sponge-spicules. Of the twenty or more species of Coccolithophoridae found in this deposit, two are preserved as complete coccospheres more frequently than as separate placoliths; these are described and named. The age of the rock is probably late Tertiary.

X-ray analyses of selected samples from the argillaceous subdivisions of the English Wealden indicate that illite, kaolinite, and mixed-layer structures are present in variable amounts. The clay mineral assemblage is thought to reflect parent material, weathering conditions in the source area, and possibly some degrading of the illite structure by the action of active waters in the depositional environment. The specific clay minerals are tentatively correlated with the palaeogeographical framework proposed by Allen (1954). It is suggested that the kaolinite was derived mainly from the Palaeozoic uplands, and the bulk of the illite and mixed-layer structures from the marginal Jurassic lowland.

Combinations of sedimentary structures in the lacustrine Keuper Marl are segregated bathymetrically. Beds deposited below lacustrine wave base are characterized by even bedding, rhythmic lamination, disturbed stratification, graded bedding, load casts, “pull-apart” structures, and oscillation ripple marks. Lacustrine beds deposited above wave base contain even bedding, rhythmic lamination, oscillation and interference ripple marks, current lineation, rib-and-furrow structure, groove casts, mudcracks, and raindrop imprints.

A marine unit in the Keuper Marl is characterized by even bedding, flat-topped oscillation ripple marks, and air-heave structures.

Comparison with sedimentary structures of other known lacustrine deposits suggests that the combination of structures in the non-marine Keuper Marl is diagnostic of lacustrine deposits. Recognition of such combinations of sedimentary structures should aid in interpreting the origin of continental sequences.

Mine sections beneath the Firth of Forth at Wellesley Colliery fill gaps in the Knowledge of the strata adjacent to the junction between Middle and Upper Coal Measures. A hitherto unrecorded marine band which may formerly have been confused with Skipsey's Marine Band is now placed about 70 feet lower in the succession. A coal seam near the base of the Upper Coal Measures contains a rib of kaolin mudstone comparable with tonstein. Local reddening and alteration of coal to limestone in the Upper Coal Measures and more particularly in the upper part of the Middle Coal Measures is typical of a zone of partial oxidation beneath some major unconformity which may lie within the Upper Coal Measures or at some unlocated sub-Permian horizon above. Structureless highly-coloured clayrocks in the Upper Coal Measures, however, are regarded as primary red beds comparable with, and perhaps the equivalents of, the Etruria Marl of the English Midlands.

The Oramutia volcanics consist of a group of ignimbrites overlain by pumice tuffs, which lie in a fault formed valley on the eastern flank of the main Kenya rift valley. The presence of a dyke of ignimbrite suggests that the “claystone ” ignimbrite of this area was erupted from fissures. A similar explanation probably applies to the pumice tuffs. These volcanics are therefore the product of Katmaian type eruptions.

The results of an examination of one quarry within the gneisses of the Bartica Assemblage are described and the validity of these results throughout the whole of the Bartica Assemblage is discussed. The foliation and banding of the gneisses at Kereti Quarry are mainly the results of tectonism; concomitant metamorphism within the Amphibolite Facies was succeeded by a two-phase metasomatism involving successive additions of Na and K. These results appear valid throughout the Bartica Assemblage and it is further suggested that the main rock type distribution in the Bartica Assemblage is also controlled by tectonism.

Schists composed essentially of biotite and sphene have been found in many localities in the psammitic groups of the Moine Series in Ardnamurchan. From petrographic and chemical evidence it is concluded that they were heavy mineral bands, composed of sphene and iron oxides with a matrix which was partly pelitic and partly quartzo-feldspathic. This postulated original composition may have been produced by sedimentary slumping, for which field evidence is available. The unusual chemical composition was probably accentuated at higher grades of metamorphism by metamorphic metamorphic segregation, particularly a loss of soda or of segregation, particularly a loss of soda or of albite into the surrounding arkoses.
