The attached algae of the Clyde and Garnock Estuaries
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 05 December 2011
Synopsis
During the period of severe sewage pollution of the Clyde Estuary and severe industrial pollution of the Garnock Estuary, these two estuaries could be distinguished by unusual abundances of one particular alga in each estuary, respectively Melosira nummuloides and Rosenvingiella polyrhiza. However, in terms of species presence data alone these estuaries did not differ from others in the British Isles. The unusual abundances of these two algal species might be ascribed to their special characteristics, related to the polluted conditions in the estuaries.
