Christian Orientalists have always been fascinated by the fact that the Greek text of the canonical Gospels is in some way secondary to a Semitic tradition. Indeed, even if we accept that all four Gospels were written in Greek, we must allow, somewhere in the chain of tradition from the teaching of Jesus to the Gospel-writers, for a transition from Aramaic to Greek. Consequently, a fruitful exegetical approach to the Gospel text has been the attempt to go beyond the Greek text-form to the more original Aramaic wording and to understand this wording in its proper setting in Palestinian Judaism of the 1st century AD. Several methods have been applied within this approach. G. Dalman championed the retroversion of significant New Testament terms into Palestinian Jewish Aramaic (and Hebrew), and investigated the use of the retroverted terms in Jewish texts of the first centuries. J. Wellhausen, and others, searched for anomalies in the Greek Gospel-text which might be explained as mistaken translations of Aramaic expressions. The history of research on this question up to 1946 is discussed and evaluated by M. Black in his Aramaic Approach to the Gospels.

M. Heideggers Wort ‘Die Wissenschaft denkt nicht’ ist insofern berechtigt, als in diesem Satz Denken die In-Frage-Stellung der fundamentalen Grund-lagen bedeutet. C. F. v. Weizsäcker stimmt von der Naturwissenschaft aus Heidegger zu, da die Physik nicht danach fragt, was Materie ihrem Wesen nach ist, sondern die sie betreffenden Gesetze erarbeitet. Auch gewisse Sparten der Geisteswissenschaften verfahren so, z. B. wenn der Linguist Regeln aufstellt oder der Texteditor Handschriften vergleicht und verwertet. Aber gerade in den geisteswissenschaftlichen Disziplinen ist die technische Arbeit meist so eng mit der Interpretation verbunden, daß theologische, religionswissenschaftliche und philosophische Grundfragen auch vom Philologen gestellt werden müssen. Auch bei der Erforschung von Gnosis und Gnostizismus ist dies der Fall, so daß hier eine Trennung von philologischer und religionswissenschaftlicher Arbeit nur zu Fehlschlüssen führen würde.

über das System des Basilides, seines Sohnes und Schülers Isidor und der Basilidianer ist unter den Forschern bis heute keine Einigkeit erzielt worden, auch ist die einzig neuere Schrift, die sich ausführlich und umfassend mit Basilides befaβt, die von Hendrix,2 zu wenig in die Tiefe gegangen und läβt manche Fragen offen. Die Uneinigkeit der Forscher hangt mit der besonders disparaten Quellenlage zusammen. Die Berichte der Kirchenväter teilen sich in zwei Gruppen. Die eine wird vertreten durch Irenaeus, Adv. haer I.

B. A. Mastin, in his article ‘A neglected feature of the christology of the Fourth Gospel’, points out ‘that in the construction of the Fourth Gospel prominence is given to the designation of Jesus as θεός. The Fourth Gospel appears to use the term θεός deliberately of Jesus; in “Paul”, on the other hand, the usage is much more casual, as indeed is the case in the rest of the New Testament, with the possible exception of Heb.i.8f'. Mastin demonstrates that Jn. 1. 1, 18 and 20. 28 speak of Jesus as God. ‘These three verses are placed at strategic points in the gospel, and this underlines the significance of what they say.’ Finally, Mastin states: ‘… it is reasonable to claim that the Evangelist thought it was important that the title θεός should be given to Jesus. It is probable that this feature of his christology is due to controversy with the Jews, and that as a result of this he formulated his estimate of Christ's person in this way.’ I fully agree with these results. The aim of my article is to show the scriptural background for this controversy.

In meiner Arbeit über die Christologie des EV (=Evangelium Veritatis) bin ich zu dem Schuß gelangt, daß diese sekundär ist. Als Gründe führte ich unter anderem an, daß sie bzw. die kaum gnostische Auffassung der Person christi in die kaum gnostiche Auffassung der Person Christi in die Voraussetzungen einer Christologie, nämlich in die kosmologie, Anthropologie und Soteriologie, nicht ganz hineinpaßt. Diese Schlußfolgerung wurde neulic zwar angegriffern, aber ich halte weiterhin daran fest, daß die Christologie des EV ein Fremdkörper im gesamten Text bleibt, zumal dasselbe Ergebnis auch für andere gnostische Schriften gelten könnte. Ich werde im folgenden versuchen, festzustellen, daß auch die Christologie oder die Gestalt Jesu Christi im AJ (=Apokryphon des Johannes) sekundär ist. Allerdings werde ich in der vorliegenden Untersuchung nicht mehr die Methode anwenden, die ich in meiner obengenannten Arbeit durchgeführt habe, zumal diese angezweifelt wurde. Ich werde hier die allgemein anerkannte, literarkritische Methode aufnehmen, da uns glücklicherweise vier Versionen des AJ zur Verfügung stehen.
