UV-Enhanced Silver Mirror Coatings
Acton Optics & Coatings introduced two new broadband coatings that provide UV reflectivity while maintaining high reflectance up to the mid-IR wavelength range. Because standard silver coatings do not reflect well below 450 nm, aluminum coatings are often used in the UV. However, because aluminum coatings also have drawbacks in terms of reflectivity and absorption, Acton Optics & Coatings developed UV-enhanced silver coatings to bridge the gap.

UCLA Combines Raman Microscopy with Scanning Electron Microscopy to Study Archaeological Textiles and Fibers
A paper “New Advancements in SERS Dye Detection Using Interfaced SEM and Raman Spectromicroscopy (µRS)” was published in the Journal of Raman Spectroscopy. It describes how a SEM may be interfaced with µRS to provide a means of non-destructively identifying organic compounds in complex samples, such as single fibers, by extraction-less analysis. This enables the characterization of dyes from reference collections and archaeological textiles.

Confocal Raman Imaging Symposium
At first glance, cement, cancer cells, interstellar dust, two-dimensional materials, billion-year-old microfossils, emulsions, and the Kramers-Heisenberg-Dirac formula appear to have little if anything in common. Yet they were all among the topics discussed by some 50 biologists, physicists, pharmaceutical researchers, and chemists within the context of Raman imaging. WITec, the German manufacturer of Raman imaging systems, had invited scientists from all over the world to an interdisciplinary symposium in Ulm, Germany, at the end of September.
