While working on taxonomic problems in the family Dotoidae and comparing the Mediterranean and Atlantic species (Schmekel & Kress, in the Press), it became apparent that very little embryological information was available for this group, other than that published by Alder & Hancock (1845–55), Pelseneer (1911), Miller (1958, Ph.D. Thesis, University of Liverpool) and Thompson (1967).

In the course of studies on the changes in egg-capsule volume in different nudibranch species (Kress, 1971, 1972) a fresh attempt has been made to obtain some comparative data on egg and capsule sizes and on the course and rate of embryonic development in the three species of Doto most commonly found in the Plymouth area, namely D. coronata (Gmelin, 1791), D. pinnatifida (Montagu, 1804) and D. fragilis (Forbes, 1838).

Two erect species of bryozoans, Alloeflustra tenuis (Kluge) and Nematoflustra flagellata (Waters), occur abundantly in similar localities at Signy Island, Antarctica. Both species are unilaminar and are colonized by a range of epibiotic taxa, principally other cheilostome bryozoans. A detailed study was undertaken of the bryozoan epibiota of these two species, collected by SCUBA over the depth range 36 to 40 m. The degree of colonization varied with host size and differed between the front and rear surfaces of each host species, and between host species. The species composition of the epibiota was also different between species and between surfaces within species. These variations are possibly related to differences between the host species in the abundance, structure and function of avicularia (putative protective structures). Specimens from deeper water (150 m) showed significantly reduced colonization by epibiota, but the same overall patterns of colonization between the two species and surfaces were still observed.

The aim of this study was to analyse the tolerance of the planktonic stages of Psammechinus miliaris to hydrostatic pressure and temperature. Embryos of Psammechinus miliaris were subjected to different combinations of pressure and temperature for 3, 6 and 12 h. The percentage of embryos at each stage and the percentage of embryos developing abnormally were measured. Larvae at the gastrula and prism stages were subjected to pressure and temperature combinations for 24 h and the larval survival was calculated measuring the percentage of swimming larvae. Both embryos and larvae could survive at greater pressures than the known adult depth limits. Larvae showed a much greater potential than embryos for surviving deeper, with approximately 100% of both gastrulae and prisms surviving up to 200 atm at 5°C. These results are similar to other shallow-water species of Echinoida. Thus larval tolerance of high pressure and low temperature may have been important for the success of this group in colonizing the deep-sea.

The influence of food concentrations (0.5, 1 and 2×105 cells ml−1) and temperatures (20 and 30°C) on the survival, development, organic carbon and nitrogen content of Balanus albicostatus larvae was evaluated. The effect of food concentration on the subsequent ageing and metamorphosis of cypris larva was also determined. At lower food concentration and temperature, naupliar development duration was prolonged and the rate of metamorphosis of nauplius to cyprid was low. The rearing food concentration affected organic carbon and nitrogen content of the nauplii, which was also reflected in non-feeding cyprids. A decrease in the carbon content was observed with cyprid ageing at 5°C. Metamorphosis was higher in 8-d aged cyprids when compared to 2-d aged cyprids, and was positively influenced by the natural biofilm.

Seasonal and spatial variations in the composition and relative contribution of the harpacticoid species in the Mondego estuary (western Portugal) were studied based on a monthly sampling along a salinity gradient. These benthic harpacticoids were collected in the water column by means of a 63-µm plankton net. The influence of hydrological parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen dissolved concentration, pH, turbidity, chlorophyll-a, total suspended solids and nutrient concentrations) was analysed by means of a redundancy data analysis. In addition, this is the first study to provide a checklist of benthic harpacticoids from this estuary. In total, 13 species plus six species not yet identified but known to belong to the genus Canuella, Microsetella, Ectinosoma, Mesochra, Harpacticus and Parapseudoleptomesochra were identified. Copepodites and adults of Euterpina acutifrons and Paronychocamptus nanus were most abundant in this harpacticoid community. While P. nanus dominated in winter and spring at upstream stations, E. acutifrons dominated more downstream. Although this species occurred along the whole salinity gradient, its highest abundances were found in the north arm of the estuary, except in autumn. This distribution may be due to the adaptability of E. acutifrons to different environments and the intermediate position between marine and estuarine conditions assigned to this species. Paraleptastacus cfr. spinicauda showed a relative occurrence of 5–10% in all stations, except at the mouth of the estuary (M). Tachidius discipes was found in low densities in Mondego estuary in spite of the large numbers of copepodites of this species in the southern arm, characterized by a high level of total suspended solids. The northern arm of the estuary was characterized by a higher numerical occurrence of harpacticoid organisms throughout the study years, with the higher densities towards the freshwater part (upstream areas). Canuella sp., Ectinosoma sp. (copepodite), Ectinosoma melaniceps, Leptocaris brevicornis, Phyllognathopus viguieri, Microsetella norvegica (copepodite) and Macrosetella gracilis (copepodite) were considered rare species. Nonetheless harpacticoid species were represented by a higher number of adults in the northern arm, and juveniles in the southern arm.

Hydroids in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, were studied on five hard-bottom transects along gradients of environmental conditions from the glacier at the fjord's head to the fjord's mouth at depth-range 0–30 m. Hydrozoa colonies are widely distributed on rock and gravel substrata in Kongsfjorden. In general, however, hydroids are not dominant or subdominant in zoobenthic communities. The exception is Symplectoscyphus tricuspidatus var. acuminatus, colonies of which were sometimes abundant enough to determine the community structure and characteristics of benthic diversity. Of the 23 species recorded in this study, Laomedea flexuosa, Phialella quadrata and Halecium tenellum as well as representatives of family Stylasteridae were recorded from Svalbard waters for the first time. Hydroid diversity was highest in the zoobenthic community structured by branched bryozoans. The abundance and distribution of hydroids were reduced, to some extent, in the inner part of the fjord compared to the outer fjord. Species richness of hydroids was high at shallow depths, decreased at around 15 m and then increased again to 30 m depth. Species with Low-boreal–Arctic and Panoceanic distributional ranges were the most frequently occurring species. Depth, type of background substratum and amount of silt on its surface were the main factors influencing hydroid distribution. Description of all recorded taxa distributions together with data on their habitat and associations in zoobenthic communities are presented in an Appendix.

Stocks of adult female Pseudocalanus elongatus have been kept for the past 6 years in a laboratory remote from the sea. The techniques used in maintaining these stocks are described.

The most suitable temperature for keeping the copepods has been found to be 10 °C.

The control of pH has not been necessary.

Although an allowance of 30 ml. of sea water for each copepod is recommended, it has been found that survival is not affected by densities of up to 1 copepod/10 ml.

Records of the young fish and plankton of Plymouth off-shore waters taken in ½ hr. oblique hauls of the 2 m. stramin ring-trawl were continued in 1948. They show an even lower production of young fish than in 1947 and a continued poverty of plankton organisms other than young fish. The dates on which collections were made are given in Table I.

Chasmagnathus granulatus is a semiterrestrial intertidal burrowing crab that inhabits both the unvegetated mudflats and the cordgrass (Spartina densiflora) salt marshes in Mar Chiquita Lagoon (Argentina), where it is considered the ecologically key species. The mass of C. granulatus eggs incubated by females is colonized by epibiotic micro-organisms and accumulates detritus. The type of epibionts that use eggs as a substrate, the infestation degree, the maternal care behaviour and the protection of the incubation chamber were compared between females living on mudflats and on Spartina-dominated areas. In both places, the epibiosis by bacteria and filamentous fungi and peritrichid colonial ciliate was significantly higher in the periphery than in the centre of the brood mass. The accumulation of detritus was higher in the periphery in mudflat females but not in salt marsh females. Moreover, the level of detritus was significantly higher in mudflat than in salt marsh females only in the periphery of the brood. The infestation level of bacteria and fungi, and peritrichids, increased throughout the embryonic development only in mudflat females. The periphery of the brood mass was significantly more contaminated in mudflat than in marsh females, while the central region of the brood mass did not differ between habitats. The pleopods were significantly more contaminated by bacteria and filamentous fungi and peritrichid colonial ciliates in premoult females than in postmoult females, independently from the collection site. The percentage of females with abnormal embryos was significantly higher in mudflats (26.7%) than in marshes (12.3%). Females with late embryos spent more time flapping the abdomen and probing the embryos with the chela. Non-ovigerous females did not perform specific maternal care activities. The volume of brood mass both in early or late stage of development is greater than that of the incubation chamber and, consequently, peripheral embryos are more exposed.

Six naupliar and a cyprid stage for B. balanus are described and diagrams given for the general outlines and individual appendages. Sizes and setation formulae are given.

The naupliar stages resemble both B. balanoides and B. crenatus; attention is drawn to some distinguishing features and a key for the separation of the species is provided.

Time series of ichthyoplankton surveys targeted at herring larvae describe the distribution of spawning in the north Irish Sea by mapping the occurrence of very young larvae. The surveys suggest, that like other herring stocks, the spawning grounds of Irish Sea herring vary over the years. Currently, spawning at the Mourne location is greatly reduced whereas spawning has occurred at a newly described site to the north of the Isle of Man (off the Point of Ayre). Whilst spawning is dominated by autumn spawners in late September, some spawning occurs through to January.

The aim of the present study was to update the existing knowledge of benthic hydroids from Svalbard waters. The material for the study was collected at several locations in the Svalbard region. The list of hydropolyps from the investigated area includes about 100 species. A total of 42 taxa was noted in the present study, 18 of which were reported for the first time in this area. One species is likely new to science. The analyses address the zoogeographical status of the species and the diversity of microhabitats. Arctic-boreal species were the main component of the hydroid assemblage, and eight types of substrata were colonized by the hydroids. Their highest biodiversity occurred on algae and bryozoans. Biological studies and faunal records used to monitor the Arctic region are of increasing importance in light of climate change and its influence on benthic community structure.

In the heart of Marinogammarus marinus three systems of nerve elements have been found, viz. (1) a local system consisting of a ganglionic trunk situated on the dorsal surface of the heart and sending branches to the muscle fibres, (2) two paired nerves, termed the 1st and 2nd cardiac nerves, connecting the local system with the central nervous system, and (3) nerves supplying the muscles of the arterial valves. It is assumed that the local system rules the beat of the heart and that the cardiac nerves have a regulating function.

Not directly connected with the heart, but having relation to the blood circulation are two sets of nerves: (1) nerves supplying the alary muscles, presumably regulating the pressure in the pericardial cavity, and (2) nerves spreading over the lateral wall of the pericardium in neuropile-like plexuses and supposed to have a neurosecretory function.

It is suggested that the centre controlling the blood circulation could be localized in the infraoesophageal ganglion.

For the sake of argument I will suppose:

I. That in a biologically self-contained area, e.g. in the North Sea, statistics show that the value of the total yearly catch of a certain species of fish is decreasing year by year;

II. That the catching power and the prices are not reduced;

III. That the physical conditions have not changed in an unfavourable manner.

Edible marine gastropods are consumed in northern Patagonia without regulations or knowledge of nutritional composition and food quality. We determined total lipids (TL), fatty acid (FA), paralytic shellfish poison (PSP) and metal contamination in six edible marine gastropods: Buccinanops globulosus, B. cochlidium, Trophon geversianus, Odontocymbiola magellanica, Tegula patagonica and Nacella magellanica. TL was lowest in the foot (0.29–0.56%) and maximum in organs (1.43–3.2%), presenting less TL than other edible species around the world. Saturated FA were similar to other consumed marine gastropods worldwide and dominant in all species studied (33.26–48.19%), while monounsaturated FA reached about 30% only in 2 species, but did not exceed 18% in the other species. Polyunsaturated FA reached up to 23.77%, but generally did not exceed 14%. Highly unsaturated FA (AA, EPA and DHA), reached about 27%. The dominant FA was palmitic acid (0.217 to 2.43 µg mg−1).Differences in FA could be related to the different alimentation of the species. Limit of PSP consumption was exceeded in a few months only for two species. Lead was not detectable (<4 µg g−1) while cadmium ranged from 0.07 to 15.32 µg g−1. Our results can be useful to ensure the safety food of these resources, which are being consumed and exported in low quantities in Argentina, but may be commercialized massively in the near future. Monitoring these and other food resources is essential and should be performed in any established fishery of the species reported here to guarantee the safety human consumption.

Aglajidae is a family of tropical and temperate marine Cephalaspidea gastropod slugs regarded as active predators. In order to better understand their food habits and trophic interactions, we have studied the diet of all genera through the examination of gut contents. Specimens were dissected for the digestive tract and gut contents were removed and identified by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Our results confirmed that carnivory is the only feeding mode in aglajids and showed a sharp preference for vagile prey (94% of food items). We suggest that the interaction between crawling speed, presence of sensorial structures capable of detecting chemical signals from prey, and unique features of the digestive system (e.g. lack of radula, eversion of the buccal bulb, thickening of gizzard walls) led aglajid slugs to occupy a unique trophic niche among cephalaspideans, supporting the hypothesis that dietary specialization played a major role in the adaptive radiation of Cephalaspidea gastropods.

The main prey species in the summer (July–September) diets of harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) on the Island of Mousa (Shetland, UK), 1994–1997, were whiting (Merlangius merlangus), herring (Clupea harengus), sandeel (Ammodytidae) and garfish (Belone belone). Norway pout (Trisopterus esmarkii) was numerically important but comprised no more than 11% of prey weight in any year. There were marked between-year fluctuations in the relative importance of these prey, with whiting comprising 16–34% (by weight) of the diet, herring 12–28%, sandeels 7–18% and garfish 7–22%. Additional data on spring (April–June) diet were available for 1995–1997: sandeels were the most important prey (% weight) in all three years (51–60% of the diet), while herring (8–48%) and gadids (2–22%) varied in importance. The average size of fish eaten was larger than that reported in comparable studies from other areas. Harbour seals appear to have selected larger sandeels, whiting and Norway pout than the average size available in the area, as indicated by survey trawls, although between-year changes in the size of Norway pout in the diet did to some extent reflect availability. Interannual variation in the importance of Norway pout in the diet appeared to track trends in abundance, although the short time series precluded detection of a statistically significant correlation. Thus, some of our results are consistent with harbour seals feeding opportunistically while others point to selectivity, particularly for prey size. Estimated consumption of fish by the 500 harbour seals on Mousa during summer ranged from 152–195 tonnes.

The distribution and movements of intertidal butterfish Pholisgunnellus were studied on the westcoast of Scotland in relation to the foraging tactics of one of its major predators, the otter. Fish were individually tagged and released at low tide in restricted areas of 5 m wide running from the top of the shore towards the sea. Population density increased from 015 fish m" at the top of the shore to 1–1 fish nv in the Laminaria zone. The median total length of all fish examined was 92 mm (N=369) with a very distinct length class of 70–80 mm. There was no relationship between length and position on the shore. Only 24 out of 156 tagged fish were recaptured inside the restricted areas. The recaptured fish had moved a mean of 21 m (SD 1–9 m) in 1–6 days (SD 1–0 days), the directions of movement being randomly distributed. Repopulation rates were studied by removing all fish from three areas of approximately 180 m each. Fish of the same size moved into the cleared areas within two tidal cycles although in much smaller numbers (only 27–52% of the initial populations). Disturbance of the habitat probably played an important role because there was a general decline in numbers in regularly visited areas throughout the experiments. It is concluded that, even allowing for this disturbance intertidal butterfish are mobile and relatively unrestricted in their movements. From the point of view of predators like the otter and the heron, more butterfish are to be caught lower down the shore and each butterfish caught will soon be replaced by another of about the same size.

Cephalopod statoliths are paired calcareous stones which lie in cavities, the statocysts, within the skull. They have a form which, though variable, shows promise as a source of criteria for taxonomic and evolutionary studies. As a preliminary to more detailed studies, Clarke (1978) published a description of the form of a generalized teuthoid statolith, coined nomenclature for the various parts and gave a very brief survey of variation of statoliths within the living Cephalopoda. This nomenclature was used in a detailed description of fossilized teuthoid statoliths by Clarke & Fitch (1979). Here, descriptions of the statoliths of the living species Berryteuthis magister (Berry, 1913), Gonatopsis borealis Sasaki, 1923, Gonatopsis (Boreoteuthis) makko Okutani & Nemoto, 1964 and Gonatus fabricii (Lichtenstein, 1818) are given and the fossil Berryteuthis species described in outline by Clarke & Fitch (1979) is compared with B. magister. A statistical analysis of measurements of the statoliths of these five species has been made and the results are presented. This forms the first part of a general description of teuthoid statoliths and similar studies on the Ommastrephidae and the Loliginidae are in preparation.

Six species of dinoflagellates were investigated for their responsiveness to the indoleamine melatonin (and its homologue 5-methoxytryptamine), the vertebrate hormone for circadian rhythm regulation. Five species were observed forming pellicle cysts in response to 5-methoxytryptamine at concentrations around 10−6M. Cells of Oxyrrhis marina were observed retracting from the theca, part of the responsive pathway to indoleamine, but the resulting naked cells were unable to form a new cell wall and lysed.
