The present study describes the variation in the benthic macrofauna related to the presence of Sabellaria wilsoni (Polychaeta: Sabellariidae) reefs on a sandy beach of the Brazilian Amazon Coast. The study also investigated whether the erosion of parts of the reef by intense wave action results in differences in the fauna. Samples were collected from a patch of reef and the adjacent sandy sediment for the analysis of the zoobenthos and substrates (granulometry and organic matter content) on Algodoal-Maiandeua Island (northern Brazil coast). The reef had more heterogeneous sediments and a higher organic matter content, and its fauna was distinct from that of the beach, with a higher density, species richness and diversity. The reef fauna included taxa typical of both consolidated and unconsolidated substrates. The portion of the reef more exposed to wave action had a lower density of reef-building worms, and these worms were smaller in size than those of the more protected portion, although the associated fauna of the exposed portion was denser and richer in species. These results confirmed that S. wilsoni is an important ecosystem engineer on the Amazon coast, and that the diversity and unique features of the fauna associated with these reefs emphasize their importance as a substrate for the local benthic communities, in particular in areas where consolidated bottoms are naturally scarce.

Cleaning interactions among the rainbow wrasse Coris julis and the azorean blue wrasse Centrolabrus caeruleus are presented with photographic registers, as well as the first record of the latter cleaning conspecifics from Azorean shallow rocky reefs.

This is the first comprehensive anatomical study of a representative of the septibranch Cuspidariidae. Particular interest in Cardiomya costellata is related to the fact that only two species of such predatory septibranchs have been recorded from the remote Açorean Archipelago and, here, individuals of both taxa are half the shell length of conspecifics throughout the species’ North-eastern Atlantic range. The shell of C. costellata is thin, fragile and rostrate. This latter attribute allows the inhalant siphon (as in other cuspidarioids) to be extended towards potential prey to effect their capture. How this extension is effected has been described but, herein, the hydrodynamic forces needed to achieve this are put into a firmer anatomical context. Uniquely amongst the Anomalesmata, cuspidarioids have, previously, been regarded as dioecious. This is not the case for C. costellata, which is a protandric consecutive hermaphrodite. The gonads and reproductive strategy of this species are compared with those of the spheniopsid Grippina coronata that is representative of a second cuspidarioid family of deeper water predators and which is a simultaneous hermaphrodite brooding self-fertilized embryos in the gonadial follicles with their release being post mortem. Some evidence suggests that in the Açores, the possible crustacean prey of C. costellata are also smaller than their mainland conspecifics, which, when viewed in the overall context of the predator's biology and anatomy, might explain its poor success in the oligotrophic waters of these mid-Atlantic islands.

Megerlia truncata and M. echinata dredged by R.V. ‘Sarsia’ have been examined living. The growth stages of the lophophore are described and figured, the series being fuller in M. echinata than in M. truncata. The adult lophophore of M. truncata has been sectioned and its structure described.

The ciliary feeding mechanism in Megerlia is similar to that already described by the author in brachiopods with plectolophous lophophores

Adult Polinices pulchellus were collected from the field and held in aquaria under ambient conditions. Egg collars laid by P. pulchellus were cultured at 14°C and 20°C and larval development after hatching was documented photographically. Planktotrophic Polinices pulchellus veligers hatched from egg collars cultured at 20°C after nine to ten days and after 14 to 15 days at 14°C. Veligers spent most of their time close to the water surface and began feeding within one hour of hatching. Repeated attempts to raise larvae to metamorphic competency at 14°C were unsuccessful. Morphological changes, most notably in the colour and size of the velum and foot, were observed in larvae raised at 20°C. During the first 25 days of larval development the velum broadened and bifurcated into four velar arms, the distal regions of which acquired a deep red coloration. By day 40 the foot had increased considerably in size and the degree of black pigmentation. By day 45 pediveligers were competent to metamorphose to the juvenile stage. Exposure to sediment from the adult habitat induced metamorphosis, larvae lost their vela and became benthic juveniles. Within three days of metamorphosis, juvenile snails drilled the bivalve Lasaea adansoni (∼2 mm), later drilled Cerastoderma edule (∼4 mm), and displayed cannibalistic behaviour. Larvae survived for ∼6 months in the absence of a suitable settlement cue.

Embryos of Crepidula dilatata develop within egg capsules where they feed on nutritive eggs also deposited within the capsules. Nutritive eggs permit the embryos to develop to a juvenile stage at hatching without passing through a pelagic larval phase. The juveniles enter the local population in posession of a well developed radula and gill filaments covered by lateral, ventral, and dorsal cilia. Initial feeding by the juveniles, employing both the radula and the gill, occurs from the first day of release from the capsule. The radular band of recently hatched snails is functional from the first day in the benthos, and is used for grazing the substrate, driving the mucus cord from the neck-canal to the mouth, and also for extracting mucus balls produced in the food pouch. The gill is active in particle collection from the first day of the free living juvenile, and is noted by the presence of well developed dorsal and ventral ciliature, active in moving mucus and particles over the gill lamellae to form the mucus string at the extreme ends of the gill filaments. The food pouch becomes active two to three days after initiation of production of mucus cords. All the functions associated with feeding, such as the numbers of mucus cords, radular strokes, and mucus balls increase in activity with progressive development of the juveniles.

Common seals Phoca vitulina give birth in the Wadden Sea area during the summer months. We provide evidence that the pupping season has advanced in date in this region. Analysis of stranding dates of recently-born, orphaned pups admitted for rehabilitation, revealed a shift of, on average, 0.88 days per year over the period 1974–2008, yielding a total advance of 26 days. Although the pupping season has become progressively earlier, there were no indications of any negative impact on the weight of the pups, nor was there an increase in the proportion of seals with a lanugo coat. These observations suggest that the most likely explanation for the change in phenology of the pupping season is a corresponding change in the timing of cessation of the period of delayed implantation. It is suggested that shifts in phenology could reflect an adaptive response of the animals to altered local circumstances. The latter may in turn be induced by larger scale phenomena such as food availability or climate change.

Understanding animal movement patterns is not only important for providing insight into their biology, but is also relevant to conservation planning. However, in aquatic and wide-ranging species such as cetaceans, this is often difficult. The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is the most common cetacean in the northern and central Adriatic Sea and has been the focus of long-term studies in some areas. All of the studied local populations show a relatively high degree of site fidelity, but their movements, ranging patterns or connectivity are not well understood. On 24 and 26 April 2014 a single adult bottlenose dolphin was observed and photographed alive off the Slovenian coast. The same individual was found dead on the shores of Goro, Italy, on 5 May 2014, about 130 km from the two sighting locations. The well-marked dorsal fin made the identification straightforward. The dolphin was found freshly dead, suggesting it had died very recently prior to being found. This indicates that the reported movement was a real one, rather than an artefact of currents. Although single cases cannot provide the basis for making population-level inferences, our observation shows that northern Adriatic bottlenose dolphins can make substantial movements in short periods of time and suggests that such movements could be more common than currently documented. Comparisons among photo-ID catalogues and stranding events can be highly informative, as they can provide useful information with implications for the cross-border conservation of mobile marine predators.

The genus Robsonella Adam, 1938 belongs to the family Octopodidae and can only be identified by some characters present in males. In this work the species Robsonella fontaniana is redescribed from morphological and morphometric characters of 33 specimens (21 males and 12 females) collected on the central-south coast of Chile, during the years 2003 and 2004, and of 11 specimens (three males and eight females) obtained from the Zoological Museum of Hamburg. New diagnoses for the genus Robsonella and the species R. fontaniana are provided. Sexual dimorphism in R. fontaniana is evident by adult males having enlarged suckers and a shorter third right arm compared to the females. Some morphological characters such as ligula, radula and terminal organ diverticulum make it possible to distinguish this genus clearly from other genera. The ligula of the hectocotylized arm in Robsonella is characterized by a longitudinal groove, rounded tip, large calamus and seven copulatory lamellae. In addition, the first lateral tooth in the radula is crescent-shaped; this allows the identification of Robsonella regardless of sex.

This study of the little known north-eastern Atlantic mytilid Modiolarca subpicta suggests a more intimate relationship with ascidians and, especially, Ascidiella aspersa, than has hitherto been appreciated. Both live for ~18 months and the reproductive cycle of both is approximately co-ordinated so that juvenile ascidians become available as hosts to the settling spat of the symbiotically epizoic M. subpicta each summer. Settling spat of M. subpicta are thought to be attracted to the exhalant flow from the ascidian's anal siphon. After the ascidian's death, the liberated mussels may adopt a wandering, free-living, lifestyle they have occasionally been reported to pursue. Anatomically, M. subpicta is of the typical mytilid plan, albeit simplified commensurate upon its normal lifestyle of protective envelopment within the host's tunic. The foot, however, is highly mobile and in addition to being used for locomotion, especially in juveniles, is responsible for the planting of byssal threads, typically dorsally above the shell, so that each individual stimulates the ascidian to produce an epidermal pocket into which it manœuvres itself and reposes, securely attached, but dorsal side down Modiolarca subpicta, epizoic in the tests of ascidians, could have evolved from a more isomyarian, equivalve, ancestor via a nestling, epibyssate, Trichomusculus-like shaped intermediary with ventral flattening and, hence, stability characteristic of the more familiar heteromyarian mytilids of rocky shores and lotic freshwaters being achieved through living dorsal side down.

Marine benthic populations are dependent on early life-history stages surviving multiple population bottlenecks. Failure at one or several of these bottlenecks can alter species’ patterns of distribution and abundance. The barnacle Semibalanus balanoides is found along temperate and sub-arctic shorelines of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Over the past century the southern range limits of S. balanoides have shifted hundreds of kilometres poleward on both coasts of the Atlantic. Here we tested if temperature limits fertilization and used these data, along with those from previous studies, to create mechanistic biogeographic models to understand which potential population bottlenecks in the early life-history of S. balanoides influence its distribution and abundance. In the western Atlantic survival of new recruits is probably more important in setting the southern range limit than the effects of temperature on early life-history stages because fertilization, brooding and the probability of larval release matching phytoplankton availability were all predicted to be high near the historical range edge. Phytoplankton mismatch may partially explain the ephemeral nature of S. balanoides in some parts of the English Channel. Further south along the coast of France predicted brooding success was reduced in a pattern consistent with historical range shifts in this region. Within Galicia, Spain fertilization was predicted to be low near the southern limit, and likely plays an important role in setting this range edge. Mismatches between phytoplankton abundance and larval release in Galicia may further limit reproductive success within this region.

The estuary of the Tamar has been surveyed from March to September 1968. Salinity distributions and variations have been measured with the object of providing a preliminary picture of the general circulation. Tidal flows appear to have most effect on water movement in the estuary.

The spatial and temporal structure of the zoobenthos associated with the invasive red alga Womersleyella setacea was studied in the northern Aegean Sea, Greece. Five replicate quadrats (20×20 cm) were collected, seasonally from July 1997 to August 1998, by SCUBA diving at four sites and two depth levels (15 and 30 m) in the Chalkidiki peninsula. We collected 23,090 specimens representing 278 animal species. Multivariate analysis showed mainly spatial differences in community structure, while the temporal ones were minimal. The ordination of sites showed a clear zonation pattern according to the different algal forms that cover the rocky substrate, with inclination the only environmental factor involved. The epifauna associated with the invasive alga was differently structured compared with three native seaweeds, showing increased species richness and abundance. The filamentous alga W. setacea was dominant in all seasons and depth levels, creating a stable habitat that contributed to the loss of seasonality in zoobenthic community structure.

Organotin (OT) compounds were determined in surface sediments and mussels Mytilus edulis from two major estuaries of the UK, the Mersey and the Thames, approximately one decade after legislation banning the use of tributyltin (TBT) compounds on small boats. Tributyltin concentrations in Mersey sediments ranged from 0·007–0·173 μg (as Sn) g−1 dry wt, increasing from the most upstream site, Fiddlers Ferry, towards the middle section of the estuary, and were highest at Stanlow, perhaps indicative of sources from the Manchester Ship Canal (MSC). A further peak in TBT concentrations occurred at New Brighton, opposite Liverpool Docks. Tributyltin was the predominant butyltin (BT) species in sediments (approximately 50%). Despite the fact that BTs represented only 4% of the total (HNO3-extractable) tin in sediments there was a linear relationship between these two tin compartments. Furthermore, BTs in mussels were correlative with total extractable tin in sediment, though in contrast to sediments, 85% of the total tin in mussels was made up of BTs, the most predominant of which was TBT. Concentrations of TBT in mussels increased from 0·058 μg Sn g−1 dry wt at the mouth of the estuary to 0·214 μg Sn g−1 dry wt at their upstream limit, close to the entrance to the MSC (Eastham). Triphenyltin (TPT) compounds were detected in only one sediment sample (New Brighton, 0·359 μg Sn g−1 dry wt) and one mussel population (Egremont, 0·022 μg Sn g−1 dry wt). Tributyltin concentrations in sediments from the Thames Estuary were marginally lower (0·002–0·078 μg Sn g−1 dry wt) than those found in the Mersey: highest concentrations were present in the upper estuary and decreased seaward. Again BTs contributed only a small percentage (<1% mean) towards the total tin loading in Thames sediments, but represented most of the tin burden (80%) in mussels. In contrast to sediments, TBT levels in mussels from the Thames Estuary were slightly higher than the Mersey (concentrations ranged from 0·100 μg Sn g−1 dry wt at the mouth to 0·302 μg Sn g−1 dry wt upstream) suggesting that TBT bioavailability is disproportionately higher in the Thames. Phenyltins were not detected in Thames samples.

The hermit crab Clibanarius erythropus first reported from Britain in 1961 is no longer present. There appears to have been no further recruitment since the late 1950s when there was a favourable combination of climate and hydrographical factors that led to successful invasion of Devon and Cornwall.

The population appears to have succumbed to the combined effect of age and declining temperatures. Additional contributory factors in the decline could be the mortalities resulting from the ‘Torrey Canyon’ disaster; the reduction in numbers of the dog-whelk (whose empty shells are the favoured home of the crab in Britain) as a result of organotin antifouling paints; and increased public pressure on the habitat.

A statistical study was made of the fertility of Evadne nordmanni, Podon intermedius, P. leuckarti and P. polyphemoides in the Clyde Sea-Area and of the former two species off Plymouth. The mean fertility of parthenogenetic females varies with different species. This is not correlated with the size of the species.

Within the species, Evadne nordmanni and Podon intermedius, there exists, in general, a positive correlation between the size and the fertility of parthenogenetic females.

The fertility of Evadne nordmanni is subject to seasonal variation. This is not correlated with fluctuations in the abundance of diatoms.

An inverse relationship was observed in Evadne nordmanni between the reproductive capacity of parthenogenetic females and the intensity of sexual reproduction.

A brief account was given of the formation of the resting egg in Evadne nordmanni and Podon intermedius.

Both whaling and whale-watching tourism occur in Iceland, but these activities are considered incompatible by many, and previous studies have suggested that whale-watch tourists would boycott whale-watch destinations where whaling takes place. This study assessed the perceptions of and attitudes towards ongoing whaling amongst whale-watch tourists in Iceland. A majority of whale-watching tourists in Iceland did not support whaling and did not think that whale-watching and whaling could exist side by side. However, 31% of respondents were unaware of Iceland's whaling before their visit and most of these indicated that prior knowledge of whaling activities would not have affected their choice of destination. More tourists had tried whale meat than either puffin or guillemot meat, suggesting that whale meat may be more strongly marketed to tourists visiting Iceland. These results suggest that not all tourists would consider boycotting travel to a whaling nation. The whale-watch industry is important to Iceland's economy, but given that the whaling industry can potentially negatively impact upon whale-watching activities, a careful analysis of the compatibility of these two industries is recommended.

Within a subtropical estuary in southern Brazil, an experiment was carried out to test the hypotheses that the deposit feeding macrofaunal polychaete Laeonereis acuta affects nematode community structure and the vertical distribution patterns of nematodes in sediments. Inclusion cages were deployed with two different densities of the polychaete and meiofaunal nematodes were sampled from six different vertical sediment layers: 0–1, 1–2, 2–4, 4–6, 6–8 and 8–10 cm depth. Although L. acuta did change the vertical distribution of both nematode and trophic groups in the sediment, allowing nematodes to inhabit deeper sediment layers, there were no apparent effects of different polychaete densities.

Functional morphology of the male gonopods, female holding systems and vulvae of Libinia spinosa are described using scanning electron microscopy and histological sections, establishing differences between immature and mature individuals. The first gonopod of mature males, larger than 35.1 mm of carapace width (CW), is long, slender, and ending in two wing-like processes; abdominal, characterized by the presence of a sub-terminal seminal canal, and sternal, closed and where the cuticle holds setae. In immature males, smaller than 29.9 mm CW, both processes are shorter, and the tip of the abdominal process closed. Six different types of setae are described for both gonopods. Internally, the gonopods have rosette glands in immature and mature individuals. The presence of secretions, which may be involved in the moulting process, was observed in immature males towards the external cuticle corresponding to the rosette glands. The rosette glands may be related to reproduction in mature males. Females presented a press-button holding system and a biconcave vulva. In immature females, smaller than 36.1 mm CW, the vulva aperture was closed by integument bulging to the outside. In mature females, larger than 42.6 mm CW, the locking system was almost fused to the cuticle, and the vulvae showed an open biconcave form with a more inner flexible membrane. Morphological characteristics shown by the gonopods of mature males develop synchronously with the acquisition of physiological maturity, not with morphometrical maturity. The mature holding systems and vulvae of females are developed synchronously with physiological and morphometrical maturity.

Although the factors influencing patterns of expansion and contraction of polyps and tentacles for tropical anthozoans has been well described there is still little information for temperate species. This study investigated the patterns of tentacle and polyp expansion behaviour of nine species of temperate Anthozoa in response to current flow, turbulence, food availability and time of day (light) at Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve (Ireland). In the absence of current flow, Metridium senile, Caryophyllia smithii, Alcyonium hibernicum and Corynactis viridis exhibited nocturnal expansion of polyps or tentacles with contraction occurring in the daytime, while Alcyonium digitatum, Actinia equina and Cerianthus lloydii showed no differences between light and dark periods. The symbiont containing species Anthopleura ballii and Anemonia viridis expanded or raised their tentacles during daylight hours (tentacle contraction is not possible for A. viridis), although in shallow waters (3 m) Anthopleura ballii tentacles were contracted at midday (highest light levels) presumably to prevent damage from ultraviolet radiation. The contraction of tentacles during light periods was considered a predator avoidance response since zooplankton availability did not vary between light and dark periods, while predator abundance (particularly fish) is greater during daylight. Even though M. senile, Alcyonium hibernicum and Corynactis viridis showed little expansion during daylight periods in the absence of current flow, tentacles and polyps were expanded at midday during periods of high current flow. A greater number of expanded polyps and tentacles were also recorded for A. digitatum, Anemonia viridis and Cerianthus lloydii during high flow conditions compared with periods of low/no flow (Caryophyllia smithii not examined). Actinia equina only exhibited tentacle expansion in response to the creation of a turbulent flow regime, which was determined from laboratory observations. Since species demonstrating contraction during daylight in the absence of current flow expanded their tentacles and polyps when subjected to high current flow, the need for feeding appears to be more important than predator avoidance in controlling expansion behaviour.
