We give a complete description of maximal compatible partial orders on the mono-unary algebra (A, f), where f: A → A is an arbitrary unary operation.

Pointwise bounds for characters of representations of the classical, compact, connected, simple Lie groups are obtained with which allow us to study the singularity of central measures. For example, we find the minimal integer k such that any continuous orbital measure convolved with itself k times belongs to L2. We also prove that if k = rank G then μ 2k ∈ L1 for all central, continuous measures μ. This improves upon the known classical result which required the exponent to be dimension of the group G.

Exact tests, based on factorization of Wilks' Λ were derived by Williams (1952, 1955) and Bartlett (1951), for testing the goodness of fit of a single hypothetical discriminant function, in the case of several groups. An analytical derivation of the distributions associated with these tests was given by the author (1964 a), after expressing the test statistics in canonical forms. Wilks' Λ to cover the case of s (s > 1) hypothetical discriminant functions. Radcliffe, in his paper, states that an analytical derivation of the distributions, as well as of the independence of the factors of Λ is desirable. This is done in the present paper, by expressing the test criteria in simpler forms and using matrix transformations in the multivariate Beta distribution (Kshirsager 1961). This is a straightforward extension of the author's paper (1964 a), which dealt with only one hypothetical discriminant function.

Let S be a subset of a group G such that S−1 = S. Denote by gr (S) the subgroup of G generated by S, and by ls(g) the length of an element g ∈ gr(S) relative to the set S. Suppose that V is a finite subset of a free group F of countable rank such that the verbal subgroup V (F) is a proper subgroup of F. For an arbitrary group G, denote by (G) the set of values in G of all the words from the set V. In the present paper, for amalgamated products G = A *HB such that A ≠ H and the number of double cosets of B by H is at least three, the infiniteness of the set {ls(g) | g ∈ gr(S)}, where S = (G) ∪ (G)−1, is estabilished.

A linear vector maximum problem with nonlinear constraints is considered. A condition is derived which is necessary for an efficient solution and sufficient for a properly efficient solution of this problem. This leads to sufficient conditions for an efficient solution to be properly efficient. An example is discussed at the end.

We study the Lw-norm (2 ≤ W < ∞) of the discrepancy of a sequence of points in the unit cube relative to similar copies of a given convex polygon. In particular, we prove the rather surprising result that the estimates obtained have the same order of magnitude as the analogous question when the sequence of points is replaced by a set of points.

We consider the Egyptian fraction equation and discuss techniques for generating solutions. By examining a quadratic recurrence relation modulo a family of primes we have found some 500 new infinite sequences of solutions. We also initiate an investigation of the randomness of the distribution of solutions, and show that there are infinitely many solutions not generated by the aforementioned technique.

Westwick's convexity theorem on the numerical range is generalized in the context of compact connected Lie groups.

In a recent study of how the output voltage of a Hall plate is affected by the shape of the plate and the size of its contacts, U. Ausserlechner has come up with a remarkable double integral that can be viewed as a generalisation of the classical elliptic ‘arithmetic–geometric mean (AGM)’ integral. Here we discuss transformation properties of the integral, which were experimentally observed by Ausserlechner, as well as its analytical and arithmetic features including connections with modular forms.

A semigroup is totally commutative if each of its essentially binary polynomials is commutative, or equivalently, if in every polynomial (word) every two essential variables commute. In the present paper we describe all varieties (equational classes) of totally commutative semigroups, lattices of subvarieties for any variety, and their free spectra.

In this paper, we show how to generate orthomodular posets from sesquilinear forms on a vector space.

Properties such as automaticity, growth and decidability are investigated for the class of finitely generated semigroups which have regular sets of unique normal forms. Knowledge obtained is then applied to the task of demonstrating that a class of semigroups derived from free inverse semigroups under certain closure operations is not automatic.

In this paper, we give certain analytic functional relations for the double harmonic series related to the double Euler numbers. These can be regarded as continuous generalizations of the known discrete relations obtained by the author recently.

We give an account of the minimal volume of the plane, as defined by Gromov, and first computed by Bavard and Pansu. We also describe some related geometric inequalities.

For positive integers n, c the class of groups all of whose n-generator subgroups are nilpotent of class (at most) c is a variety, here denoted [n → c]. Hanna Neumann in her book ([15] pp. 93–98) reported on the first stage of the investigation of these varieties. The main result was that [n → c] is nilpotent if and only if c ≦ n ≧ 2 ([15] 34.33 and 34.54).

The classes of prestarlike functions Rα, α ≧ – 1, were studied recently by St. Ruscheweyh. The author generalizes and extends these classes. In particular the author obtains the radius of Ra+1 for the class Rα, α ≧ –1.

The higher Lie characters of the symmetric group Sn arise from the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt basis of the free associative algebra. They are indexed by the partitions of n and sum up to the regular character of Sn. A combinatorial description of the multiplicities of their irreducible components is given. As a special case the Kraśkiewicz-Weyman result on the multiplicities of the classical Lie character is obtained.

The concept of simultaneous or collective continuity of a family of single valued functions was introduced by Gale [3] for regular spaces to replace equicontinuiry in metric spaces. Smithson [6] extended the standard point-open and compact-open function space topologies to include multi-valued functions. The aim of this paper is to use these topologies and extend the notion of collective continuity in order to obtain an Ascoli type theorem for multi-valued functions analogous to Theorem 1 in [3, p. 304]. We have the following theorem in mind:

We discuss generalizations of the Lie-Kolchin-Mal'cev theorem. For example we show that if G is a soluble linear group of degree n, then G contains a triangularizable subgroup T whose index in G is bounded by function of n only and such that T is normalized by every automorphism of G normalizing G0, the Zariski connected component of G containing the identity. We also prove that in certain situations at least the index of G0 in G can be bounded in terms of the degree and the ground field.

We construct the Weil representation of the Kantor-Koecher-Tits Lie algebra g associated to a simple real Jordan algebra V. Later we introduce a family of integral operators intertwining the Weil representation with the infinitesimal representations of the degenerate principal series of the conformal group G of the Jordan algebra V. The decomposition of L2(V) in the case of Jordan algebra of real square matrices is given using this construction.
