Consider the nth-order neutral differential equation where n ≥ 1, δ = ±1, I, K are initial segments of natural numbers, pi, τi, σk ∈ R and qk ≥ 0 for i ∈ I and k ∈ K. Then a necessary and sufficient condition for the oscillation of all solutions of (E) is that its characteristic equation has no real roots. The method of proof has the advantage that it results in easily verifiable sufficient conditions (in terms of the coefficients and the arguments only) for the oscillation of all solutionso of Equation (E).

We analyze fractional powers Hα, α > 0, of the generators H of uniformly bounded locally equicontinuous semigroups S. The Hα are defined as the αth derivative δα of the Dirac measure δ evaluated on S. We demonstrate that the Hα are closed operators with the natural properties of fractional powers, for example, HαHβ = Hα+β for α, β > 0, and (Hα)β = Hαβ for 1 > α > 0 and β > 0. We establish that Hα can be evaluated by the Balakrishnan-Lions-Peetre algorithm where m is an integer larger than α, Cα, m is a suitable constant, and the limit exists in the appropriate topology if, and only if, x ∈ D(Hα). Finally we prove that H∈ is the fractional derivation of S in the sense where the limit again exists if, and only if, x ∈ D(Hα).

This paper deals with some asymptotic properties of nonoscillatory solutions of a class of n-th order (n < 1) differential equations with deviationg arguments involving the so called n-th order r-derivative of the unknown function x defined by

where ri (i = 0,1…n) are positive continous functions on [t0, ∞). The fundamental purpose of this paper is to find for any integer m, 0 < m < n – 1, a necessary and sufficient condition (depending on m) in order that three exists at least one (nonoscillatory) solution x so that the exists in R – {0} The results obtained extend some recent ones due to Philos (1978a) and they prove, in a general setting, the validity of a conjecture made by Kusano and Onose (1975).

The main result of this paper is an upper bound for the number of maximal subgroups in finite solvable groups. Our result improves an earlier one of Cook, Wiegold and Williamson [1]. At the end, we use our bound to deduce an estimation for the total number of subgroups in finite solvable groups.

As a natural generalisation of $q$-Schur algebras associated with the Hecke algebra ${\mathcal{H}}_{r,R}$ (of the symmetric group), we introduce the queer $q$-Schur superalgebra associated with the Hecke–Clifford superalgebra ${\mathcal{H}}_{r,R}^{\mathsf{c}}$, which, by definition, is the endomorphism algebra of the induced ${\mathcal{H}}_{r,R}^{\mathsf{c}}$-module from certain $q$-permutation modules over ${\mathcal{H}}_{r,R}$. We will describe certain integral bases for these superalgebras in terms of matrices and will establish the base-change property for them. We will also identify the queer $q$-Schur superalgebras with the quantum queer Schur superalgebras investigated in the context of quantum queer supergroups and provide a constructible classification of their simple polynomial representations over a certain extension of the field $\mathbb{C}(\mathbf{v})$ of complex rational functions.

We give continuous separation theorems for convex sets in a real linear space equipped with a norm that can assume the value infinity. In such a space, it may be impossible to continuously strongly separate a point $p$ from a closed convex set not containing $p$, that is, closed convex sets need not be weakly closed. As a special case, separation in finite-dimensional extended normed spaces is considered at the outset.

Let $(X,d,\unicode[STIX]{x1D707})$ be a metric measure space endowed with a distance $d$ and a nonnegative, Borel, doubling measure $\unicode[STIX]{x1D707}$. Let $L$ be a nonnegative self-adjoint operator on $L^{2}(X)$. Assume that the (heat) kernel associated to the semigroup $e^{-tL}$ satisfies a Gaussian upper bound. In this paper, we prove that for any $p\in (0,\infty )$ and $w\in A_{\infty }$, the weighted Hardy space $H_{L,S,w}^{p}(X)$ associated with $L$ in terms of the Lusin (area) function and the weighted Hardy space $H_{L,G,w}^{p}(X)$ associated with $L$ in terms of the Littlewood–Paley function coincide and their norms are equivalent. This improves a recent result of Duong et al. [‘A Littlewood–Paley type decomposition and weighted Hardy spaces associated with operators’, J. Geom. Anal.26 (2016), 1617–1646], who proved that $H_{L,S,w}^{p}(X)=H_{L,G,w}^{p}(X)$ for $p\in (0,1]$ and $w\in A_{\infty }$ by imposing an extra assumption of a Moser-type boundedness condition on $L$. Our result is new even in the unweighted setting, that is, when $w\equiv 1$.

Let K be a field and G a finite group with subgroup H. We say that (G H) is a K-free pair if whenever M is a finitely generated KG-module whose restriction MH is a free KH-module, then M is a free KG-module. In this paper pairs of groups with this property will be investigated.

Degeneracies occur with increasing frequency in some large scale linear programming problems, but with a simple change to the (revised) simplex method, resulting stationarity of the algorithm can be reduced. The method introduced here may also prevent cycling; neither the lexicographic refinement of Dantzig, Orden and Wolfe nor the perturbation technique of Charnes may be required to prevent cycling.

Pommerenke initiated the study of linearly invariant families of locally schlicht holomorphic functions defined on the unit disk The concept of linear invariance has proved fruitful in geometric function theory. One aspect of Pommerenke's work is the extension of certain results from classical univalent function theory to linearly invariant functions. We propose a definition of a related concept that we call hyperbolic linear invariance for locally schlicht holomorphic functions that map the unit disk into itself. We obtain results for hyperbolic linearly invariant functions which generalize parts of the theory of bounded univalent functions. There are many similarities between linearly invariant functions and hyperbolic linearly invariant functions, but some new phenomena also arise in the study of hyperbolic linearly invariant functions.

In a recent paper [7] the author considered, among other things, the integral transform where is the fundamental solution of the heat equation There we gave a physical interpretation of the transform (1.1). Here we shall choose a slightly different interpretation, more convenient for our present purposes. If then u(O, t) = f(t). That is, the function f(t) defined by equation (1.1) is the temperature at the origin (x = 0) of an infinite bar along the x-axis t seconds after it was at a temperature defined by the equation .

In [2], John Cossey and Sheila Oates Macdonald give a basis for the set of laws of PSL(2, 5) — the simple group of order 60 — and with one extreme exception the laws of their basis involve at most two variables. They raise the problem of finding a basis in which all of the laws involve only a small number of variables, and remark that they have shown that five variables will suffice. Here we give a basis consisting entirely of two variable laws.

In this note we study the existence of primes and of primitive divisors in function field analogues of classical divisibility sequences. Under various hypotheses, we prove that Lucas sequences and elliptic divisibility sequences over function fields defined over number fields contain infinitely many irreducible elements. We also prove that an elliptic divisibility sequence over a function field has only finitely many terms lacking a primitive divisor.

In the paper we study the asymptotic behaviour of the number of trees with n vertices and diameter k = k(n), where k/√n → ∞ as n → ∞ but k = o(n).

We present a systematic and self-contained exposition of the generalized Riemann integral in a locally compact Hausdorff space, and we show that it is equivalent to the Perron and variational integrals. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for its equivalence to the Lebesgue integral with respect to a suitably chosen measure.

Throughout this paper F is an algebraically closed field of characteristic p (≠ 0) and g is a finite group whose order is divisible by p. We define in the usual way an F-representation of g (or F G-representation) and its corresponding module. The isomorphism class of the, F G-representation module M is written {M} or, where no confusion arises, M. A (G) denotes the F-representation algebra of G over the complex field G (as defined on pages 73 and 82 of [6]).

Here we prove that, for a $2$-primal ring $R$, the Laurent series ring $R((x))$ is a clean ring if and only if $R$ is a semiregular ring with $J(R)$ nil. This disproves the claim in K. I. Sonin [‘Semiprime and semiperfect rings of Laurent series’, Math. Notes 60 (1996), 222–226] that the Laurent series ring over a clean ring is again clean. As an application of the result, it is shown that, for a $2$-primal ring $R$, $R((x))$ is semiperfect if and only if $R((x))$ is semiregular if and only if $R$ is semiperfect with $J(R)$ nil.

Free algebras with an arbitrary number of free generators in varieties of BL-algebras generated by one BL-chain that is an ordinal sum of a finite MV-chain Ln, and a generalized BL-chain B are described in terms of weak Boolean products of BL-algebras that are ordinal sums of subalgebras of Ln, and free algebras in the variety of basic hoops generated by B. The Boolean products are taken over the Stone spaces of the Boolean subalgebras of idempotents of free algebras in the variety of MV-algebras generated by Ln.

By a theorem of G. Birkhoff, every algebra in an equationally defined class of algebras K is a subdirect product of subdirectly irreducible algebras of K. In this paper we show that this result is true for any class of structures. not necessarily algebraic, closed under isomorphisms and direct limits. Quasivarieties in the sense of Malcev are examples of such classes of structures. This includes Birkhoffs result as a particular case.

For normed linear spaces two similar characterizations of strong differentiability of the norm and rotundity of the dual space are established, but it is shown that in general there is no causal relation between these two concepts.
