page 257 note 1 Signor Martinori does not appear to have read our preface, for he never once mentions Mr. Fell's name: whereas it is clearly explained that the more distant portion of the road was explored by him alone.

page 257 note 2 From F. Tarquini, Notizie istoriche … di Civita Castellana (1874), a work which I unfortunately did not consult, but which contains some valuable information (cf. Martinori, 78, 80), notably as to the precise date of the abandonment of the old Via Flaminia, which occurred only in 1609 (Tarquini, 41).

page 257 note 3 He attributes to the latter a diameter of 11.66, probably a misprint for 4.66 (J.R.S. XI, p. 184).
