1 That this review appears after so long a delay and has been written, against all rules, by one of the contributors to the volume itself, who furthermore had already reviewed a former volume (JRS xxi, 1931, 283Google Scholar), will be interpreted by the papyrologist of the year A.D. 5000, to whom nothing is too modest for study, as a sign of some disturbance in Europe in 1944. We hope that his theory will not be considered too adventurous.—Nobody would have written this review better than Jean Gagé, to whom it had originally been entrusted. The present reviewer is indebted for information and discussion to Dr. H. I. Bell, Mr. Hugh Last, Dr. F. Schulz and Mr. M. N. Tod.
