Visualization and quantification of snow structures at a scale of a few millimetres is important in understanding the mechanical, thermal and electromagnetic properties of snow. Surface sections and, to an even greater degree, three-dimensional (3-D) reconstructions of cast snow samples are difficult to prepare, and automatic image processing is notoriously difficult and often requires manual evaluation. Here, we present a new method to measure the 3-D structure of cast snow samples. Snow samples cast with diethyl phthalate (DEP) and frozen are cut to a sample size a few centimetres in diameter and up to 10 cm in height. The ice of these samples is then sublimated in high vacuum and the remaining negative structure (replica) is imaged using X-ray microtomography (micro-CT). The accuracy of the method is demonstrated by comparing micro-CT scans of the original snow structure and the replica. The method described here allows easy transportation of samples, requires little manual interaction, has a very high spatial resolution of up to 10 μm and is environmentally friendly.

There are no direct methods to measure the boundary condition at the base of a glacier. Here, we propose a method that works by iteratively changing boundary conditions until a satisfactory fit to surface observations is obtained. The method is an accelerated version of one known as Kozlov–Maz’ya iteration. We apply it to the problem of ice flow through a transverse cross-section, and show it to be effective by solving the inverse problem for a sequence of synthetic data. We also apply the method to two real glaciers, Athabasca and Perito Moreno, one of which has a known basal velocity distribution.

Supraglacial Lac de Rochemelon was formed 50 years ago behind an ice dam and grew steadily until 2004. In October 2004, the volume of the lake reached 650 000 m3, bringing its surface within 0.2 m of the top of the ice dam. To eliminate the threat to towns located below in the event of an overflow, the lake was drained artificially in October 2004 and during the summer of 2005. Once the volume had been reduced to 250 000 m3 by siphoning, a channel was dug with explosives and the remaining water overflowed naturally. This offered a very good opportunity to investigate the breaching of an ice dam accompanied by thermal erosion of the drainage channel. Extensive field measurements were carried out during drainage. Analysis of the energy dissipated in the channel reveals that only half of the available energy was used for breach erosion. A numerical model was used to simulate the evolution of a number of variables during drainage and to study the sensitivity of discharge and ice erosion to different parameters, revealing a high sensitivity to water temperature. Model simulations indicate that natural drainage of this lake at the beginning of October 2004 would have led to a peak discharge of <6 m3 s−1.

In front of Laguna Parón there is a huge moraine which turns through 90° in the middle of the valley and with a narrow covered glacier on the top. It has been studied by electrical exploration, and using the displacements of 43 marked boulders on the glacier. Assuming a uniform balance on the glacier tongue and semi-elliptical cross-sections, it has been possible to estimate this balance and the glacier thickness. A great amount of the measured velocity comes from the creep of the moraine itself, which seems 10 be a kind of rock glacier, probably without interstitial ire. It must have taken all the Holocene to be formed. During its complex history a proglacial lake must have formed at some time, the rupture of which explains the crooked form.

To assess the role of methodological differences on measured trace-element concentrations in ice cores, we developed an experiment to test the effects of acidification strength and time on dust dissolution using snow samples collected in West Antarctica and Alaska. We leached Antarctic samples for 3 months at room temperature using nitric acid at concentrations of 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0% (v/v). At selected intervals (20 min, 24 hours, 5 days, 14 days, 28 days, 56 days, 91 days) we analyzed 23 trace elements using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Concentrations of lithogenic elements scaled with acid strength and increased by 100–1380% in 3 months. Incongruent elemental dissolution caused significant variability in calculated crustal enrichment factors through time (factor of 1.3 (Pb) to 8.0 (Cs)). Using snow samples collected in Alaska and acidified at 1% (v/v) for 383 days, we found that the increase in lithogenic element concentration with time depends strongly on initial concentration, and varies by element (e.g. Fe linear regression slope = 1.66; r = 0.98). Our results demonstrate that relative trace-element concentrations measured in ice cores depend on the acidification method used.

Antarctic ice shelves are buttressed by numerous pinning points attaching to the otherwise freely-floating ice from below. Some of these kilometric-scale grounded features are unresolved in Antarctic-wide datasets of ice thickness and bathymetry, hampering ice flow models to fully capture dynamics at the grounding line and upstream. We investigate the role of an 8.7 km2 pinning point at the front of the Roi Baudouin Ice Shelf, East Antarctica. Using ERS interferometry and ALOS-PALSAR speckle tracking, we derive, on a 125 m grid spacing, surface velocities deviating by −5.2 ± 4.5 m a−1 from 37 on-site global navigation satellite systems-derived velocities. We find no evidence for ice flow changes on decadal time scales and we show that ice on the pinning point virtually stagnates, deviating the ice stream and causing enhanced horizontal shearing upstream. Using the BISICLES ice-flow model, we invert for basal friction and ice rigidity with three input scenarios of ice velocity and geometry. We show that inversion results are the most sensitive to the presence/absence of the pinning point in the bathymetry; surface velocities at the pinning point are of secondary importance. Undersampling of pinning points results in erroneous ice-shelf properties in models initialised by control methods. This may impact prognostic modelling for ice-sheet evolution in the case of unpinning.

Two components of discharge through the internal hydrological systems of Alpine glaciers were separated on the basis of chemical composition of water. Some surface melt waters retain low solute contents after flowing without delay through conduits in which no chemical enrichment occurs, whereas those flowing slowly at the glacier bed have increased ionic concentrations. A simple mixing model was used to investigate temporal variations in the quantities of water routed through each of the two sub-systems. Electrical conductivity was taken as an indicator of melt-water composition and was monitored for periods during the summer ablation season of 1975 at Gornergletscher and of 1977 at Findelengletscher. At both glaciers, conductivity of melt waters varied diurnally inversely with discharge fluctuations, depending on the proportion of total discharge routed through the two sub-systems. Total discharge and the flow component routed rapidly through conduits within the glacier, a large proportion (50–80%) of total discharge, exhibited in-phase rhythmic diurnal hydrographs at the two glaciers. Distinctive subglacial hydrological regimes are contrasted. At Findelengletscher, the hydrographs of total discharge and of subglacial chemically enriched flow were in phase. At Gornergletscher, the subglacial hydrograph occurred with reverse asymmetry and out of phase. A possible interpretation is that water was temporarily stored in basal cavities during high total discharge. During the night, stored water was released, contributing much of the total discharge at times of low flow.

We present preliminary results on the occurrence of Pb, Cd, Zn, Al and Fe in dated samples collected from snow–firn packs at an altitude of 4130 m on Ürűmqi glacier No. 1, eastern Tien Shan. Extreme precautions for avoiding contamination were taken throughout the sampling, processing, transportation and analysis procedures. The concentrations of trace metals were determined by a double-focusing inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer in an ultra-clean room. The average concentrations for these metals in surface snow are (in ng g–1): Pb, 2.4; Cd, 0.05; Zn, 10.0; Al, 100.0; and Fe, 130.0. These are higher concentrations (especially for Pb and Zn) than those in the polar and/or low-latitude remote areas. The data show that the input of trace metals to the snow has a clear seasonal change. Lower concentrations in surface snow can be found in July through September and higher concentrations from October to March, with an exception for January. The mean concentrations of the elements in the snow–firn pack also indicate seasonal variations and show a marked inverse relationship with temperature, possibly a result of meltwater percolation in the snow–firn pack.

We used observations and modeling of Siple Dome, West Antarctica, a ridge ice divide, to infer the importance of linear deformation mechanisms in ice-sheet flow. We determined the crossover stress (a threshold value of the effective deviatoric stress below which linear flow mechanisms dominate over nonlinear flow mechanisms) by combining measurements of ice properties with in situ deformation rate measurements and a finite-element ice flow model that accounts for the effects of viscous anisotropy induced by preferred crystal-orientation fabric. We found that a crossover stress of 0.18 bar produces the best match between predicted and observed deformation rates. For Siple Dome, this means that including a linear term in the flow law is necessary, but generally the flow is still dominated by the nonlinear (Glen; n = 3) term. The pattern of flow near the divide at Siple Dome is also strongly affected by crystal fabric. Measurements of sonic velocity, which is a proxy for vertically oriented crystal fabric, suggest that a bed-parallel shear band exists several hundred meters above the bed within the Ice Age ice.

Deep, pervasive shear deformation of the bed to high strains (>100) may have been primarily responsible for flow and sediment transport of the Lake Michigan lobe of the Laurentide ice sheet. To test this hypothesis, we sampled at 0.2 m increments a basal till from one advance of the lobe (Batestown till) along vertical profiles and measured fabrics due to both anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and sand-grain preferred orientation. Unlike past fabric studies, interpretations were guided by results of laboratory experiments in which this till was deformed in simple shear to high strains. Fabric strengths indicate that more than half of the till sampled has a <5% probability of having been sheared to moderate strains (7–30). Secular changes in fabric azimuth over the thickness of the till, probably due to changing ice-flow direction as the lobe receded, indicate that the bed accreted with time and that the depth of deformation of the bed did not exceed a few decimeters. Orientations of principal magnetic susceptibilities show that the state of strain was commonly complex, deviating from bed-parallel simple shear. Deformation is inferred to have been focused in shallow, temporally variable patches during till deposition from ice.

In a field and laboratory study we discuss the formation, growth, and wave-absorption properties of grease ice. Our field observations show that grease-ice formation occurs under cold windy conditions in both leads and polynyas. In leads grease ice forms in the open water, then is herded to the down-wind edge of the lead; in polynyas a Langmuir circulation herds the grease ice into long plumes parallel to the wind. In the laboratory we grow grease ice in a wave tank and measure its wave absorption properties for single-frequency, two-dimensional waves. On a large scale we find that the thickness of the grease ice, which increases away from the paddle, is determined by a balance between the wave-momentum flux and the free-surface tilt. On a small scale our photographs show that the crystals which make up the grease ice consist of discs measuring about 1 mm in diameter and 1–10 µm thick, which at low rates of shear sinter together into larger clumps yielding a viscosity increase. To measure this non-linear viscosity, we study the decay of wave amplitude between two critical distances measured inwards from the leading edge. The first occurs when the depth of grease ice exceeds k−1 where k is the wave number; the second further distance is a line of transition from liquid to solid behavior which we call the dead zone. Between these two distances the wave amplitude decays with a linear slope α, which increases as (a0k)2 where a0 is the wave amplitude in open water. Concurrent measurements of ice concentration show that it increases from values of 18–22% at the leading edge to a local maximum of 32–44% at the dead zone, while the values at the dead zone increase non-linearly with a0k. Finally, comparison of the observed α to that calculated from a yield-stress viscosity model shows if the yield-stress coefficient is proportional to the incident wave-momentum flux, the model predicts the observed α.

A 28 year record of lower Pine Island Glacier, West Antarctica, constructed from 15 Landsat images, shows changes at the terminus, grounding zone and both margins. The north margin has expanded 5 km into the adjacent ice shelf in a sustained event that was underway in 1973 and may have begun in 1957. Between 1991 and 1997, this expansion ceased and a new region of rifting was created associated with an ice rise on the glacier’s floating tongue. Changes in the topography of a nearby ice rise are used to deduce an upper-bound estimate of a 134 m thinning of the adjacent ice shelf. On the south margin, widening was limited to 1 km over the observation period and is seen propagating downstream in an intermediate-dated image. New areas of crevassing are also evident in the grounding zone of the glacier. Ice loss by the calving of large tabular bergs vastly exceeds mass loss by calving of many small bergs. These observations are consistent with reported changes of the 1990s and indicate that changes in the flow of Pine Island Glacier have occurred over the full period of satellite observations.

Speckle tracking of repeat RADARSAT-2 fine-beam imagery acquired over 24 day periods in March 2009 allowed the creation of updated surface motion maps for the entire Devon Ice Cap, Canada. Error analysis indicates that speckle tracking can determine ice motion to an accuracy of ~5 ma-1. Comparisons with earlier velocity maps from the mid-1990s and 2000 reveal velocity patterns that largely agree with flow regimes described previously. However, motion determined along East5 Glacier indicates an increase in surface velocities between the studies. Additionally, Southeast2 Glacier has significantly accelerated over the past decade, with velocities greater in 2009 than in the early 1990s along almost the entire length of the glacier. This is likely indicative of a surge. Present-day total mass loss from Devon Ice Cap due to iceberg calving is calculated as 0.40 ± 0.09 Gta-1, similar to that reported by Burgess and others (2005), with Belcher Glacier accounting for ~42% of the entire loss.

Annual total precipitation and the annual accumulation on the Greenland ice sheet are evaluated and presented in two maps. The maps are based on accumulation measurements of 251 pits and cores obtained from the upper accumulation zone and precipitation measurements made at 35 meteorological stations in the coastal region. To construct the accumulation map, the annual precipitation was split into solid and liquid precipitation components. Annual total precipitation exceeding 2500mmw.e. occurs on the southeastern tip of Greenland, while the minimum precipitation is estimated to occur on the northeastern slope of the ice sheet. The mean annual precipitation for all of Greenland is 340 mm w.e. The largest annual accumulation of about 1500 mm w.e. is found on the glaciers in the southeastern corner of Greenland, while the smallest accumulation is found on the northeastern slope of the ice sheet west of Danmarkshavn. The mean accumulation on the Greenland ice sheet is estimated at 310mmw.e. The regional difference in accumulation is examined with respect to the 850hPa(mbar) level circulation. The present surface topography is found to play an important role in determining regional accumulation on the ice sheet.

Following three decades of relative stability, Jakobshavn Isbræ, West Greenland, underwent dramatic thinning, retreat and speed-up starting in 1998. To assess the amount of ice loss, we analyzed 1985 aerial photos and derived a 40 m grid digital elevation model (DEM). We also obtained a 2007 40 m grid SPOT DEM covering the same region. Comparison of the two DEMs over an area of ∼4000 km2 revealed a total ice loss of 160 ± 4 km3, with 107 ± 0.2 km3 in grounded regions (0.27 mm eustatic sea-level rise) and 53 ± 4 km3 from the disintegration of the floating tongue. Comparison of the DEMs with 1997 NASA Airborne Topographic Mapper data indicates that this ice loss essentially occurred after 1997, with +0.7 ± 5.6 km3 between 1985 and 1997 and −160 ± 7 km3 between 1997 and 2007. The latter is equivalent to an average specific mass balance of −3.7 ± 0.2 m a−1 over the study area. Previously reported thickening of the main glacier during the early 1990s was accompanied by similar-magnitude thinning outside the areas of fast flow, indicating that the land-based ice continued reacting to longer-term climate forcing.

Nucleation and growth of bubbles during freezing of solutions of air and helium in water has been investigated experimentally using different techniques to give freezing rates between 1 μ m s−1 and 10 mm s−1. Bubbles grow as cylinders below 5 μ m s−1, becoming egg shaped, the narrow ends towards the freezing interlace, at higher ice growth velocities. Bubble concentration increases and size decreases with increase of growth rate. The detail of bubble size and concentration is influenced appreciably by the particulate content of the water sample. Very high freezing rates give initially clear ice. Subsequently, bubbles nucleate and grow at grain boundaries within the ice. Bubbles do not move with recrystallization, their spatial distribution showing the grain boundary positions at the time of nucleation.

Observations are interpreted in terms of nucleation on particles in suspension in the water and a significant incorporation of air molecules into the ice lattice. The relevance of the results to bubble-containing ice formed under natural conditions is discussed.

The effect of spatial variations in ice thickness, accumulation rate and lateral flow divergence on radar-detected isochrone geometry in ice sheets is computed using an analytical method, under assumptions of a steady-state ice-sheet geometry, a steady-state accumulation pattern and a horizontally uniform velocity shape function. By using a new coordinate transform, we show that the slope of the isochrones (with a normalized vertical coordinate) depends on three terms: a principal term which determines the sign of the slope, and two scale factors which can modify only the amplitude of the slope. The principal term depends only on a local characteristic time (ice thickness divided by accumulation rate minus melting rate) between the initial and final positions of the ice particle. For plug flow, only the initial and final values have an influence. Further applications are a demonstration of how the vertical velocity profile can be deduced from sharp changes in isochrone slopes induced by abrupt steps in bedrock or mass balance along the ice flow. We also demonstrate ways the new coordinate system may be used to test the accuracy of numerical flow models.

We estimate the glacier mass balance of a 9.5 km2 mountain glacier using three approaches for balance years 2009, 2010 and 2011. The photogrammetric, GPS and glaciological methods yielded sampling densities of 100, 5 and 2 points km-2, with measurement precisions of ± 0.40, ± 0.10 and ± 0.10 m w.e. respectively. Our glaciological measurements likely include a positive bias, due to omission of internal and basal mass balance, and uncertainty in determining the interface between snow and firn with a probe (±0.10 m w.e.). Measurements from our photogrammetric method include a negative bias introduced by the manual operator and our temperature index model used to correct for different dates of imaging (0.15 m w.e.), whereas GPS measurements avoid these biases. The photogrammetric and GPS methods are suitable for estimating glacier-wide annual mass balance, and thus provide a valuable measure that complements the glaciological method. These approaches, however, cannot be used to estimate mass balance at a point or mass-balance profiles without a detailed understanding of the vertical component of ice velocity.

Recent investigations of crevassing on alpine glaciers and ice shelves have been based on linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). However, LEFM is unable to explain some aspects of crevasse formation such as the initiation of crevasse propagation from crystal-scale (mm) microcracks, the slow propagation of large fractures in ice shelves, and the acceleration of crevasse opening before breaking of the ice terminus. Here another mechanism to account for these observations is proposed: subcritical crevassing. Subcritical crack growth, documented in many materials though not yet explored in ice, is characterized by a crack velocity that scales as a power of the tensile stress intensity factor, but is much less than that associated with critical crack propagation. This mechanism allows crevasse propagation from mm-scale microcracks at velocities much lower than body wave speeds, and explains crevasse-opening accelerations in a natural way. Subcritical crevassing is theoretically explored for several simplified situations but is limited by a lack of available data on crevasse evolution.
