L'acquisition de la norme sociolinguistique française pose des problèmes considérables aux locuteurs non-natifs. L'analyse de la variation dans l'omission du ne dans un corpus d'interlangue avancée de 27 apprenants néerlandophones interviewés dans une situation informelle et formelle confirme que l'instruction formelle est insuffisante pour la maîtrise de la norme sociolinguistique native. Une majorité de locuteurs omettent le ne un peu moins souvent dans une situation formelle mais la variation va dans le sens opposé pour une minorité de locuteurs. L'observation et surtout la participation à des interactions authentiques avec des locuteurs natifs stimulent l'acquisition de la norme sociolinguistique. Une analyse statistique révèle que différentes variables socio-biographiques, psychologiques et situationnelles déterminent la variation intra- et interindividuelle dans les taux d'omission du ne.

This paper investigates the effects of the first language (LI) on second language (L2) argument structure, in two situations: (i) LI sentences form a superset of those permitted in the L2; (ii) L2 sentences form a superset of those permitted in the LI. An experiment was conducted on 55 anglophone children learning French in Canada. Subject completed a perference task, comparing sentences which varied the types of arguments and adjuncts, and their ordering. Result indicate that the subject differed from a native speaker control group in various ways; English argument structure had effects but learners were also sensitve to properties of French which are distinct from English.

This article examines levelling and diversity in northern urban French pronunciation through the optic of folk (= non-linguists') perceptions of variation. These perceptions are investigated by the identification of authentic voice samples (rather than other instruments widely used in perceptual dialectology such as mental mapping): respondents from the Pays de la Loire region of north-western France heard extracts of scripted speech from Nancy and Rennes, and were asked to identify the speakers' regional background and say whether they were of urban or rural origin. The results of this test show that while some difference between the two speaker location groups was accurately perceived, the informants also formed some inaccurate judgements, partly based on social stereotypes. Overall there is some confirmation of accent levelling, and of general social psychological tendencies such as stereotyping, annexation and time-lag in perceptions of regional–social linguistic variation.

Notre étude porte sur l'acquisition des variantes du futur par les élèves d'immersion. Tous comme les locuteurs L1, ces élèves emploient trois variantes (le futur périphrastique; le futur fléchi et le présent de l'indicatif) et ils le font au même niveau de fréquence: le futur périphrastique est de loin la plus fréquente. Nous discutons des facteurs éducatifs et sociologiques auxquels on peut attribuer ces résultats inattendus. Ceci dit, les élèves d'immersion expriment aussi parfois le futur avec des formes verbales non natives qui font l'objet d'une étude spéciale. Nous terminons par une micro-étude des variantes du futur périphrastique à la 1ère personne du singulier.

This article examines the phonological status of schwa in clitics, in particular whether or not schwa should be included in their lexical representation. Several distributional and experimental arguments pointing to the lexical status of clitic schwas are reviewed and are shown to be inconclusive, due to the existence of additional data that suggest a different interpretation not involving underlying schwas. The discussion includes experimental results that fail to show residual lip rounding in the vicinity of an omitted schwa at clitic boundaries, contra Barnes and Kavitskaya's (2002) previous claim. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, the non-contrastive nature of clitic schwas militates against their underlying status.

Cet article rapporte d'abord les résultats d'un certain nombre de travaux sur les pronoms d' allocuton tu et vous qui ont explorélats sociolinguistiques des rèles d'emploi de ces pronoms. Ensuite nous décrivons les résultats de notre proper enquête en Alsace, dans laquelle nous avons tenté de montrer l'influence de l'âge du locuteur, et de son interlocuteur, dans le choix de ces pronoms. Nous avons distingué entre le tutoiement de prime abord et les choix qui sont faits dans les relations établies. Les résultats montrent avant tout la diversité des comportements et des motivations dans ce domaine, et notre conclusion porte sur la difficulté, d'après ces résultats, à énoncer des ‘règles’, quelles qu'elles soient, pour le choix de tu\vous, étant donné le grand nombre de facteurs personnels et évaluatifs qui entrent en jeu.

This article aims (a) to explore the operationalisation and definition of lexical L2 proficiency and related constructs with a view to identifying a set of measures that can adequately capture the dynamics of lexical L2 proficiency development over time, and (b) to shed more light on the development of lexical proficiency in French Foreign Language classes. After a discussion of theoretical, terminological and methodological issues in L2 vocabulary research, we present a longitudinal quantitative study of the lexical development of Dutch-speaking adolescents learning FFL in Dutch-medium schools in Brussels over a three-year period and compare these learners' lexical proficiency in French to native speaker benchmarks.

In this paper, we review the various types of epistemic usages of the (simple and anterior) future tenses in French with the assumption that what actually licenses their occurrence is not a semantic feature such as aspect but pragmatic effects that give relevance to the utterance at the moment of speech. We review the main hypotheses proposed in the relevant literature and conclude that epistemic futures seem to fulfill the function of communicating – through a metarepresentation of a future verification – not only epistemic modality and evidentiality, but also, and perhaps especially, the inference that a particular course of action has to be undertaken from the perspective of a state of affairs that is true in the present.

Time is generally recognised as a ubiquitous component in the way discourse is organised: the discourse-level analysis of time has led to numerous studies, mostly focused on verb tense and temporal adverbials. The discourse role of space seems less obvious: not only is space not systematically marked in the sentence, but it does not lead in itself to any discourse relation.

Our article presents a variationist analysis of future verb forms in Acadian French. The main variants considered are the inflected future (e.g. je partirai) and the periphrastic future (e.g. je vais partir). The purpose of this study is two-fold: a) it will determine the distribution of these variants and their linguistic correlates; b) it will compare the use of future verb forms with other varieties of French. Our results reveal that the inflected future is used with greater frequency in Acadian French than in other Canadian varieties and that the factors that condition the variable in Acadian are not the same as in other varieties.

The contextual and pragmatic motivations for the use of the QU-final interrogative structure are explored in a substantial corpus of spoken French, employing a variationist methodology. A number of categorical, or invariant, contexts, are identified, and the effect of several variable contextual and pragmatic constraints is examined. QU elements of three or more syllables and copulas are found to strongly favour the use of the QU-final structure, whereas rhetorical questions and monosyllabic QU elements disfavour its use. Certain discourse contexts effectively rule out the QU-final structure, and, except for a few categorical contexts, its use is always optional.

This article is situated within the recent strand of SLA research which applies variationist sociolinguistic methods to the study of the acquisition of sociolinguistic variation by the L2 speaker. Whilst that research has tended to focus on the study of morphological and morphosyntactic variables, this article aims to investigate a number of acquisitional trends identified in previous research in relation to phonological variation, namely the variable deletion of /l/ by Irish advanced L2 speakers of French in both an instructed and study abroad environment. Based on quantitative results using GoldVarb 2001, the study further illuminates the difficulty that the acquisition of sociolinguistic variation poses to the instructed L2 speaker, who is found to make minimal use of informal sociolinguistic variants. In contrast, contact with native speakers in the native speech community is seen to allow the L2 speaker to make considerable sociolinguistic gains, not only in relation to the acquisition of the informal variant in itself, but also in relation to the underlying native speaker grammatical system as indicated by the constraint ordering at work behind use of the variable.

The subject clitic on has a surprising range of referential values, both indefinite and definite, that can be seen only when one examines the use of the pronoun in natural discourse. This paper proposes a partial typology of on derived from examples found in a socially-deverse corpus of Tourangeau French. The focus of the paper is on the variable use of on versus vous or tu as indefinite-genetic pronouns. The variation is partially constrained by a complex of linguistic, sociolinguistic, and partially discourse pragmatic factors. The saliency the speaker wishes to give to the referent apppears to be a key factor determining the probability of occurrence of the variants.

Dans cette étude, nous examinons les facteurs qui influencent la production des mots comportant un E caduc facultatif en syllabe initiale. Nous avons demandé à des locuteurs francophones de raconter quatre histoires comportant des mots où le E caduc est facultatif, et nous avons ensuite calculé, pour chaque mot, un taux de production avec effacement. Afin de prédire les taux obtenus, sept facteurs ont été choisis et, pour chacun d'eux, un coefficient de corrélation a été calculé. Une combinaison des trois facteurs les plus importants a ensuite été utilisée pour déterminer le pourcentage de variation du E caduc facultatif qui peut être expliqué. Il en ressort que la production du E caduc facultatif est en partie prévisible.

Cet article porte sur les périphrases aspectuelles (commencer à, être en train de, etc.). On montre que si les grammaires divergent fortement à propos du statut lexical ou grammatical qu'il convient de leur accorder, il est néanmoins possible et pertinent de dissocier deux classes de périphrases, auxquelles on attribue un fonctionnement sémantique nettement différent. Les unes servent à construire un sous-procès, tandis que les autres indiquent un type de visée aspectuelle particulier. Cette analyse prend appui sur des études récentes (Kronning, François, Laca), qui montrent de façon indépendante, mais convergente, qu'il est nécessaire de dissocier deux classes de périphrases aspectuelles sur la base de leur comportement syntaxique.

Notre article porte sur le français de jeunes habitants de quartiers pluri-ethniques et multilingues de grandes villes françaises. Il présente la poursuite d'une approche exploratoire amorcée en 2005 par Jamin et Trimaille consistant à la base en un rapprochement d'études sociolinguistiques réalisées à Grenoble (Trimaille, 2003a) et en région parisienne (La Courneuve et Fontenay-sous-Bois, Jamin, 2005), mais qui s'élargira ici à Marseille (Gasquet-Cyrus, 2004). Nous proposerons que dans un contexte de relative uniformité du français urbain et de tendance convergente du ‘sud linguistique’ vers les normes plus neutres du français d'oïl (pour une variable au moins, la rétention/effacement du schwa), ce nivellement ne se fait pas seulement dans la direction du français décrit comme standard. Des formes non standard similaires sont en effet attestées dans plusieurs centres urbains géographiquement assez distants. Par un ensemble de données quantitatives et qualitatives issues des trois études mentionnées supra, nous proposons d'interpréter la présence dans les trois sites de recherche d'une de ces formes, la palatalisation/affrication des occlusives dentales et vélaires, comme l'indice d'un certain degré de ‘convergence dans la divergence’ par rapport au français standard. Nous nous intéresserons ici aux facteurs de diffusion de cette variante, et plus particulièrement aux rôles respectifs de la variation stylistique et des représentations sociolinguistiques.

In this paper we study different aspects of lexical richness in narratives of British learners of French. In particular we focus on different ways of measuring lexical sophistication. We compare the power of three different operationalisations of the Advanced Guiraud (AG) (Daller, van Hout and Treffers-Daller, 2003): one based on teacher judgement, one on ‘le français fondamental 1er degré’ and one on frequency of lexical items. The results show that teacher judgement is a highly reliable tool for assessing lexical sophistication. The AG based on teacher judgements is better able to discriminate between the groups than the other operationalisations. It also works better than Vocabprofil (the French version of Laufer and Nation's (1995) Lexical Frequency Profile).

This article considers variable /l/-deletion in the French definite articles, subject clitic pronouns and in one frequent phono-lexical context, exemplified by table ‘table’ and ronfle ‘snore’. It reports the treatment of /l/ by a sample of secondary schoolchildren from Lorraine in north-eastern France. The definite articles and subject clitics are considered on the one hand in relation to the linguistic constraints which influence /l/-deletion, and on the other to the extra-linguistic variables of age, sex and speech style. Variable /l/-deletion in the phono-lexical context referred to above is examined principally in relation to the lexical input which influences /l/-deletion. Finally, we consider whether the sociolinguistic patterns reported here are indicative of linguistic change in progress, or whether the effects observed are revelatory rather of attitudes to non-standard linguistic forms inculcated in speakers by normative French pedagogy.

L'article décrit le cadre méthodologique de l'approche pronominale et présente la base de données lexicale PROTON, un dictionnaire de valence verbale pour le français, élaboré dans cette approche. La valence y est caractérisée par les paradigmes de pronoms proportionnels (dont les traits s'unifient avec ceux des constituants comportant des éléments lexicaux). On présente, dans une forme actualisée, les notions-clef pour la description des constructions et des schèmes de valence, ainsi que les prolégomènes à la typologie des prédicateurs et de leurs actants. Ensuite on précise le contenu et les conventions formelles du lexique de valence. Une entrée du lexique est commentée à titre d'exemple. Cette même entrée est ensuite comparée aux articles correspondants du dictionnaire de valence spécialisé de Busse et Dubost (1983).

This article investigates single word intrasentential code-switching in obsolescent Jersey Norman French. It considers the relationship between code-switched forms and borrowings and, via an analysis of flagging strategies, reveals that speakers seem to differentiate between these two types of contact form. On the basis of the findings, it is suggested that the presence of self-correction as a flagging device may warrant further investigation as a possible criterion for distinguishing code-switches and borrowings. The switching patterns of individual informants are also examined and it is demonstrated that a speaker's attitude towards the dialect seems to have a bearing on the extent to which they code-switch.
