A model of the growth, pregnancy and lactation of red deer was developed for incorporation into a whole-farm systems model in order to improve the understanding of venison supply systems. The model estimates the level of metabolic demand for a deer, which depends on the maximum capacity of its tissues to use energy. A function that takes account of satiation signals and rumen capacity is used to convert the metabolic demand into an estimate of the deer's forage intake demand, which can be used as an input into a foraging model. The actual energy intake of the deer is subsequently used to predict live weight (LW), body condition score, foetal growth and gestation length in pregnant hinds, and milk yield in lactating hinds. In order to make these predictions, the model requires inputs that include values for mean daily temperature, mean daily wind speed, day length and season, as well as pasture quality. Values for model parameters were obtained from the literature, rather than by fitting to data, and model predictions were then compared with measurements obtained in independent trials.

In simulations, the model predicted that 152-day-old stags and hinds, weighing, respectively, 44 and 48 kg, would grow to, respectively, 106 and 90 kg when 517 days old, compared with trial results of, respectively, 103 and 84 kg. Predictions for the weight of pregnant hinds, gestation length and calf birth weight compared well with an experiment for hinds on a high plane of nutrition but poorly for hinds on medium and low planes. Weekly predictions of hind LWs for days 132–230 of pregnancy had respective residual means of 0·08, 6·2 and 8·5 kg, and respective residual standard deviations of 1·33, 4·6 and 5·2 kg for the high, medium and low nutritional planes. Predicted gestation length for high, medium and low planes of nutrition were, respectively, 231·5, 238·0 and 242·0 days compared with experimental values of, respectively, 231·3, 234·7 and 239·2 days, while predicted birth weights were, respectively, 8·5, 8·3 and 8·9 kg compared with measured values of, respectively, 8·4, 9·5 and 9·3 kg. Predicted calf growth from birth to 14 weeks agreed well with data (residual mean and standard deviation being 0·04 and 1·15 kg, respectively).

The existing software structure of the whole-farm model dictated that the deer model use the Euler method with a fixed, daily time step. Therefore, the model was constructed using difference (rather than differential) equations and used a traditional, energy-balance method for predicting growth. This empirical approach tacitly imposed a standard body composition and standard metabolic rate for adults, with values corresponding to well-fed deer. This does not cater for variation in body composition and metabolic activity, and in retrospect, caused the model to perform poorly for the medium and low nutritional regimes.

In the Central Peruvian highlands, potatoes are commonly cultivated by smallholder farmers in fields between 3500 and 4300 m asl. Severe climatic conditions, marginal soils and limited access to inputs and infrastructure define these challenging agro-ecological environments. To prepare an adequate seed bed for the potato and mitigate climatic, topographic and labour constraints, Andean farmers have developed distinct footplough-based tillage systems: barbecho, chiwa and chacmeo. A series of field experiments was conducted in 2005/06 and 2006/07 at four different locations to investigate the effect of three different tillage systems on potato tuber yield, varying factors such as cultivars and types and amounts of fertilizer applied. The objective was to improve understanding of the effect of these factors on potato yield and study the potential advantages and disadvantages of each tillage system.

The study showed that the type of tillage influenced a great variety of factors. Farmers often use a combination of tillage systems as a strategy to diversify possible risks, considering trade-offs regarding productivity v. yield stability, internal v. external resource use, labour requirement during peak times v. more uniform distribution or extensive v. intensive production. The chiwa and to some extent the chacmeo tillage systems resulted in relatively constant and stable yields for different environments and genetic materials, whereas the more intensive barbecho system sought to optimize growth conditions for the potato crop but was more liable to stress and required external resources. Currently, farmers often use the barbecho system to produce commercial cultivars for the urban markets investing the greatest share of internal and external resources. They use the chiwa and chacmeo systems to produce diverse native cultivars for their home consumption, valorizing their taste, cooking qualities and lower resource requirements.

Transition from juvenile to adult vegetative phase in maize is associated with pest and disease resistance. However, reports are not consistent on the significance and relative importance of additive or dominance genetic effects and variances. The purpose of the present research was to elucidate the genetic effects and variances and to identify molecular markers associated with phase transition. Three cycles of divergent selection were carried out in a maize synthetic accelerating and delaying phase transition. Three and four inbred lines were released from the third cycles of late phase transition (LPT) and early phase transition (EPT), respectively. Generation mean analyses were performed from two LPT×EPT crosses in order to calculate genetic effects and variances. Markers associated with vegetative phase transition were identified by contrasting simple sequence repeat (SSR) alleles between LPT and EPT inbreds and selection cycles, and by testing whether drift could explain the allelic changes observed in the respective third cycles of selection. Juvenile traits are mainly regulated by additive genetic effects and variances, whereas adult traits have a complex regulation involving dominance and epistatic effects. Based on error variances, EPT improves phenotypic stability. The SSRs phi028, phi112 and umc1725 were associated with selection for phase transition, suggesting that these genome regions are involved in the regulation of vegetative phase transition of maize, although none of the genes previously associated with phase transition has been located in those regions.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and maize (Zea mays L.) are the main crops grown in China. Applying organic manures is an important practice in sustaining soil fertility and agricultural productivity in these cropping systems. The current paper presents the effects of manure application on grain yields in nine long-term experiments that consist of one continuous maize, four wheat–maize and four rice-based cropping systems across a wide range of agro-ecological regions in China. The study shows that regular manure application can increase soil organic carbon (SOC) and grain yield across all the sites. Overall, regular use of manure results in larger increases in SOC in the maize and wheat–maize systems than in the rice-based systems. Application of manure tends to increase the grain yield in the maize and wheat–maize systems during the final years, but increases the grain yield in the rice-based systems during the initial years of the long-term experiments. There is only one site that shows significant improvement in the yield trend in association with the application of manure. The effects of manure on yield trends are probably determined by the initial yield and/or the ‘organic C effect’ that may cause gradual improvements in SOC and soil physical properties.

Adapting in vitro transgenic carrots to soil is the most crucial step preceding the field investigation of transgenic carrots. A low proportion of plants, around 0·20, acclimatize to soil (Hardegger & Sturm 1998) and thus prohibit the generation of high-expression carrot lines. In the present paper, a protocol for an efficient soil transfer is presented and the impact of carrot cultivar, soil substrate, tissue culture, and transformation process on transfer process is analysed. Somatic embryo germinants of Daucus carota cv. Rote Riesen 2 and Lobbericher Gelbe Futtermoehre showed a tremendous survival proportion – up to 1·00 – when transferred to their optimal soil substrate: sandy and loamy soil, with low content of macro and micro elements and a pH of 5·8. By optimizing the conditions described here, the proportion of soil acclimatized transgenic carrot plants of D. carota Lobbericher Gelbe Futtermoehre was increased from 0·1 to 0·87, and for the cultivar Rote Riesen from 0·09 to 0·67.

Prickly scorpion's tail (Scorpiurus muricatus L.) is a self-reseeding annual legume widely distributed in natural pastures of the Mediterranean area and appreciated by farmers for its productivity, forage quality and palatability. Twenty-eight natural populations were collected throughout Sicily in 2005; two field experiments were carried out in 2005/06 in a hilly area of the Sicilian inland to assess the genetic variation based on pheno-morphological and agronomic characters. The pheno-morphological traits observed were analysed using a principal component analysis (PCA). The first four components of PCA (eigenvalues >1) explained 0·84 of the total variation. Similarities obtained by PCA were investigated by means of cluster analysis, which clearly identified five clusters.

The pheno-morphological and agronomic traits were mainly affected by latitude of the collection site (0·69 of the correlations were significant), spring rainfall (0·63) and rain days per year (0·63). Altitude was not significantly correlated with any of the traits.

A strong positive correlation was found between the days to the first flower and spring rainfall at the collection site. Populations originating from subhumid or dry-subhumid Mediterranean climate zones showed greater leaf dimensions when compared with those originating from semi-arid zones. Seed weight decreased with increasing number of rain days per year and spring rainfall. Populations from drier environments showed, on the whole, a more prostrate growth habit. Dry matter yield at spring cut exhibited a significant correlation with latitude (positive) and longitude (negative). Seed production was highly correlated with spring rainfall, number of rain days per year and latitude of collection site. The presence of a large diversity among populations appears to be valuable when searching for suitable S. muricatus material to exploit in pastures and crop–livestock farming systems of Mediterranean areas.

The effects of cultivars and environment on phenolic composition were analysed in a 7-year experiment comprising 18 grape cultivars (10 red, 8 white) in Spain. A total of 37 flavonoids (14 anthocyanins in red cultivars; 14 flavonols and 9 dihydroflavonols in white cultivars) were analysed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Significant differences between years were observed for most of the compounds (11 of the 14) studied in red cultivars and seven compounds in white cultivars. A significant year×cultivar interaction was observed for some of the flavonoids studied. All the phenolic compounds determined showed significant differences among grape cultivars. A high coefficient of variation was found for five flavonoid compounds: dihydroquercetin-3-glycoide, dihydrokaempferol-3-glycoside, kaempferol-3-glycoside, quercetin-3-glucoside and kaempferol-3-rhamnoside. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the variation observed in the phenolic compounds identified four relatively compact groups for the white and red grape cultivars. It was found that the variation of the phenolic composition among years for white grape cultivars was higher than for red cultivars. Stable profiles between years were found for Sousón, Garnacha, Caiño Tinto and Verdejo Negro. These results also indicate that the effect of year on grape phenolic composition was less than that of cultivar.

A potassium fertilizer field trial of rain-fed cotton crop was carried out on ferrasols at two sites in Benin. The measurements focused on leaf formation patterns and their ability to convert intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) into biomass. The results highlighted the role of K in plant architecture and leaf area development. On K deficient plots, the reduction in leaf area was mostly the result of a decreased number of leaves and, to a lesser extent, leaves of a smaller individual size. During vegetative growth, leaf senescence did not differ between treatments. Biomass partitioning to different plant compartments was found to be affected by potassium deficiency, in favour of leaves. No significant effect of K treatment was observed on the conversion of intercepted radiation into biomass.

A 3-year experiment (2005–07) was conducted on Reunion Island (France) to evaluate the effect of species, climate and fertilization levels on fibre and protein fractions of tropical (C4; Chloris gayana and Pennisetum clandestinum) and temperate (C3; Dactylis glomerata and Lotium multiflorum) grasses. A near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) prediction referential was developed to estimate neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF), crude protein (CP), NDF insoluble protein (NDF-IP) and ADF insoluble protein (ADF-IP). The NIRS equations were then used to screen many regrowth grass samples collected at heading stage continuously for 3 years to evaluate their changes during the seasons. Results showed that grass species differed significantly in fibre and protein fractions. NDF, ADF and ADF-IP were the lowest in D. glomerata/L. multiflorum and the highest in C. gayana. The wet season was associated with higher NDF, ADF and NDF-IP in D. glomerata/L. multiflorum and lower NDF-IP in P. clandestinum. Fertilization increased the CP in C. gayana and the NDF-IP in P. clandestinum, but decreased the ADF-IP of both C. gayana and D. glomerata/L. multiflorum. Growth rate strongly changed NDF, ADF, NDF-IP and ADF-IP although no change in CP appeared. In general, NDF, ADF and NDF-IP increased with the growth rate. In contrast, the ADF-IP content decreased from slow to fast growth rate in C. gayana and D. glomerata/L. multiflorum. Growth rate changes were thus considered as a general indicator for fibre and protein fraction variations of these grasses.

The effects of the anti-gibberellin triazole metconazole on yield, lodging resistance, seeds/m2 (sink size) and rooting in the presence of negligible amounts of disease were investigated using five multi-site experiments carried out in the UK between 1999 and 2007. The green area index (GAI) of the crop at the time of application had the greatest influence on the yield response across 173 comparisons between metconazole-treated and untreated crops. Crops with a GAI in March (growth stage (GS) 3·3–3·5 ‘green bud’) of 0·8–2·8, which represented moderate to large sized UK commercial crops, had an average response of +0·21 t/ha to metconazole applied at the full recommended rate of 1·2 litres/ha. Crops with a GAI of less than 0·8, which represented small commercial crops, had an average response of −0·14 t/ha. Applications between green bud and early flowering gave the greatest yield increase. Positive yield responses were associated with a reduction in lodging, or more seeds/m2, or a combination of both. The proportional area lodged was reduced by 0·1 for each 50 mm reduction in crop height (R2=0·60; P<0·001). Across six field trials, metconazole applied in spring increased root length density between soil depths of 0·40 and 1·00 m from an average of 0·478 to 0·601 cm/cm3 (P<0·05). It was estimated that this could increase yield by 0·2–0·3 t/ha in a dry season. The results show that the growth regulatory properties of metconazole can be used to improve several key aspects of growth that are believed to restrict current farm yields.

Parameterization in crop simulation modelling is a general procedure to calibrate a crop model to explore the best fit for a certain regional environment of interest. The parameters of radiation use efficiency (RUE) and light interception coefficient (k) of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) for different cultivars were estimated under various irrigation conditions in South Texas in 2006 and 2007. A calibration procedure was then performed for determination of RUE using the environmental policy impact calculator (EPIC) crop model (Williams et al.1984). This was carried out using data sets obtained separately from the data for parameter estimation. The estimates of k and RUE were 0·63 and 2·5 g/MJ, respectively, which were determined based on the field experiment and variation of simulated lint yield. When the parameters were used with EPIC to simulate the variability in lint yields, a correlation coefficient of 0·86 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0·22 t/ha were obtained, presenting no significant differences (paired t-test: P=0·282) between simulation and measurement. The results demonstrate that an appropriate estimate of the model parameters including RUE is essential in order to make crop models reproduce field conditions properly in simulating crop growth, yield and other variables.

Grain filling is an intensive transportation process regulated by plant hormones. The present study investigated whether and how the interaction between abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene is involved in mediating the grain filling of rice (Oryza sativa L.) under non-flooded mulching cultivation. A field experiment repeated over 2 years was conducted with two high-yielding rice cultivars, Zhendao 88 (a japonica cultivar) and Shanyou 63 (an indica hybrid cultivar), and four cultivation treatments were imposed from transplanting to maturity: traditional flooding as control (TF), non-flooded plastic film mulching (PM), non-flooded wheat straw mulching (SM) or non-flooded no mulching (NM). Compared with that under TF, grain yield was reduced by 21·0–23·1% under PM (P<0·05), 1·4–1·8% under SM (P>0·05) and 50·9–55·4% under NM (P<0·05). Both PM and NM significantly (P<0·05) reduced the proportion of filled grains and grain weight and were associated with decreased grain filling rates. In SM there was a significant increase in the grain filling rate. The concentration of ABA in the grains was very low at the early grain filling stage, reaching a maximum when the grain filling rate was the highest, and showed no significant differences (P>0·05) between TF, PM and SM. However, it was significantly higher in NM. In contrast to ABA, the ethylene evolution rate and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) concentration in the grains were very high at the start of grain filling and sharply decreased during the active grain filling period. Both PM and NM increased the ethylene evolution rate and ACC concentration, whereas these were reduced in SM. The ratio of ABA to ACC was increased under SM but decreased under PM and NM, indicating that ethylene was more enhanced than ABA when plants were grown under NM and PM. The concentration of ABA correlated with the grain filling rate as a hyperbolic curve, whereas the ethylene evolution rate correlated with the grain filling rate as an exponential decay equation. The ratio of ABA to ACC significantly correlated with the grain filling rate with a linear relationship. Application of amino-ethoxyvinylglycine (inhibitor of ethylene synthesis by inhibiting ACC synthase) or ABA to panicles under TF and PM at the early grain filling stage significantly increased activities of the key enzymes involved in sucrose to starch conversion in the grains, sucrose synthase, ADP glucose pyrophosphorylase and soluble starch synthase, grain filling rate and grain weight. Application of ethephon (ethylene-releasing agent) or fluridone (inhibitor of ABA synthesis) had the opposite effect. The results suggest that antagonistic interactions between ABA and ethylene may be involved in mediating the effect of non-flooded mulching cultivation on grain filling, and a high ratio of ABA to ethylene enhances grain filling rate.

Understanding how crop systems might respond to recent climate change is fundamental to the successful adaptation of efforts for sustainable agriculture. In the present paper, records over the period 1987–2004 from a long-term agroecosystem experiment carried out in Northeast China were used to explore the impacts of global warming on soybean (Glycine max (L) Merr.) yields under different controlled fertilization treatments. The results indicated that soybean yields were closely related to growing season temperatures. In most fertilization treatments, soybean yields showed a significant negative response to higher daily maximum temperature and greater diurnal temperature range (DTR), whereas they showed a significant positive response to higher daily minimum temperature. Analysis of covariance showed that these responses of soybean yields to temperature variables did not differ across fertilization treatments. Overall, soybean yields have declined significantly due to the warming trends since 1987. This has been mainly attributed to the higher daily maximum temperature. The present report demonstrates that soybean production in Northeast China may face challenges due to global warming unless potential adaptation options are adopted. The true mechanisms behind these yield impacts need further investigation to address effective agricultural adaptations for soybean systems to adapt to global warming.

The data from 161 experiments testing the response of sugarbeet yield to nitrogen fertilizer were assembled in a database. Three commonly used N response models (Mitscherlich, linear plus exponential and bilinear) were fitted to each set of fertilizer application rates and the models were then assessed on how well they fitted all the data. The bilinear model was judged the most appropriate model for fitting to beet root yield adjusted to a standard sugar concentration. The optimum N application was determined for each experiment. Attempts were then made to correlate these optima with factors associated with the site and the season (winter rainfall, soil texture, amount of soil mineral N at sowing, sowing date, summer rainfall and harvest date). Beet grown in peat soil never responded significantly to any applied N fertilizer and neither did crops treated recently with organic manure supplying large amounts (>150 kg N/ha) of available N. Variation in N optima between other sites could not be explained by factors that could be used to predict the amount of fertilizer to apply. In the absence of any method to make reliable predictions of variations in fertilizer need, the most economical uniform amount was calculated. At present fertilizer prices and beet values, this amount is between 100 and 110 kg N/ha. It is possible that the N fertilizer need of beet crops does not vary predictably because this variation is an experimental error. The crop needs a reasonably standard application of fertilizer because much N has to be taken up early in the crop's development, rapidly and predominantly from the topsoil that, at this stage, contains most of the small fibrous root system.

Seasonal patterns of antioxidative enzymes and proteins and their relations to cold-hardiness of nine olive (Olea europaea L.) cultivars (Ascolona, Domat, Gemlik, Hojoblanca, Lecquest, Manzanilla, Meski, Samanli and Uslu) are documented in the current study. Fully expanded, uniformly sized leaves from 2-year-old shoots of the cultivars were collected from 20-year-old trees in cold-acclimated (CA, in January) and non-acclimated (NA, in July) stages. Leaf samples were exposed to low temperature at 4, −5, −10 and −20°C for 12 h to determine their cold-hardiness (LT50; assessed by electrolyte leakage). Cold-acclimation produced an increase in freezing tolerance of all cultivars (by lowering LT50). Domat and Lecquest were found to have the highest cold-hardiness among the nine cultivars investigated. Ascolona, Gemlik, Hojoblanca had moderate cold-hardiness, while Samanli, Meski, Uslu and Manzanilla were more sensitive. Activities of catalase (CAT: EC 1·11·1·6), ascorbate peroxidase (APX: EC 1·11·1·11) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase significantly varied depending on the cold-acclimation stage and the cold-hardiness level of the cultivars. Activities of the three antioxidative enzymes and total soluble proteins (TSP) were higher in the CA stage than in the NA stage. Although no accumulation of major polypeptides, except a 23 kDa protein, was detected either in CA samples or NA samples by SDS-PAGE, anti-dehydrin immunoblots revealed that the 43 and 23 kDa polypeptides were detectable during cold-acclimation of olive cultivars. Accumulation of both 43 and 23 kDa dehydrin was significantly higher in the CA stage than in the NA stage in all cultivars. Accumulation of 43 kDa dehydrin was correlated with cold-hardiness of the cultivars, while 23 kDa dehydrin was considered as cultivar-dependent since its accumulation was not parallel to LT50 values of the cultivars. Indeed, the tissues of cvs Domat, Lecquest, Ascolona, Hojoblanca and Gemlik were found to enhance the structural stability of cellular membranes in the CA stage by increasing both the activity of such enzymes as CAT, APX and NADPH oxidase to activate the antioxidative systems and the expression of 43 kDa dehydrins.

Studies were conducted on Entisols to understand the effects of continuous pulse cultivation on soil chemical, physical and biological properties by comparing with continuous non-pulse crops and uncultivated soils. Soils of a Typic Ustochrept, developed from the same parent material, from 16-year-old pulse cultivation fields, non-pulse crop fields and uncultivated fallow fields in a location with uniform topography were analysed using a polyphasic approach combining traditional soil physical and chemical analysis, culture-dependent and independent microbiological analysis and enzymatic analysis. Among the soil physical properties, only soil aggregate stability and soil compaction showed significant improvement in soils under pulses than non-pulse crops. Compared to uncultivated fallows, the soil pH after pulse cultivation was about 1 unit lower while non-pulse crop cultivation reduced it by 0·36. The chemical and biological variables that contribute most to the discrimination of the pulses effect and non-pulse crops effect on soil quality are organic carbon (C), microbial biomass C, nitrogen (N) and biomass ninhydrin-N, and secondary variables related to N cycle:nitrate (NO3–N), organic and total soluble N. The enzyme activities were significantly higher in soils after pulse cultivation than after non-pulse crops or uncultivated fallow. The soil quality of pulse cultivation fields seems to be markedly different to that of non-pulse crop fields and uncultivated fallows in terms of all the variables studied.

The oat kernel, caryopsis or groat, is generally covered with fine silky hairs termed trichomes. The trichomes of naked oat are partly lost during threshing and handling of grains when the lemma and palea are removed and the surface of the grain is exposed. Trichomes can cause itchiness and more serious reactions in those handling the grains. Trichomes also accumulate and form fine dust and can block up machinery. Trichomes are clearly problematic and growers of naked oat are eager to have oat cultivars with reduced numbers of trichomes. Experiments compared the differences in trichome numbers of naked-oat cultivars and threshing settings. The cultivars differed considerably in pubescence. Cultivars Lisbeth and NK 00117 had most trichomes and cv. Bullion the fewest. Completely bare or polished grains were not observed. Pubescence was not associated with grain weight or test weight. However, grains from the lowermost spikelets of the panicle had fewer trichomes than those from the uppermost spikelets. For cv. Bullion, some threshing settings, including increased cylinder speed, slightly increased grain polishing such that grains had some areas completely free of trichomes. Reduction of the concave clearance in the combine harvester had a similar effect. However, threshing settings did not affect the trichomes of cv. Lisbeth. Adjusting threshing machinery settings was generally not an efficient means of solving the problems associated with naked-oat trichomes, but cultivar differences existed and further efforts in breeding to reduce trichome numbers are required.

Groundnut or peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a valuable food and forage crop in West Africa. It is important to determine yield-limiting factors and to develop suitable management practices to improve groundnut productivity. The objective of the present research was to determine the influence of fungicide application at different sowing densities on growth, biomass and yield of early and late maturing groundnut under rainfed conditions. Two groundnut cultivars (Chinese, 90 days duration and Manipinter, 120 days duration) were grown at low (8 plants/m2), medium (12 plants/m2) and high density (20 plants/m2), with and without fungicide application, for two growing seasons (2004 and 2005). Data on leaf area index (LAI), light interception (LI) and total biomass were measured at different stages of crop development. Haulm (stem and leaf), pod and seed yields were measured at maturity. Fungicide application increased LAI, LI and total biomass of both cultivars from 65 days after sowing (DAS) until maturity. Fungicide application significantly increased pod and seed yields by 95 and 103%, respectively, on average. In both years, the long duration cultivar Manipinter had significantly greater LAI, LI and total biomass at later stages of crop development when compared with the short-duration cultivar Chinese. The growth and yield of both cultivars were significantly less at the lowest population density when compared with medium or high population densities. There was no significant difference between medium and high population densities in haulm, pod and seed yield at maturity. It is concluded that sowing a long-duration cultivar at a density of 12 plants/m2 with fungicide application significantly improved groundnut yields under rainfed conditions in Ghana.

About 0·10 of the food supply in China is produced in rice–wheat (RW) cropping systems. In recent decades, nitrogen (N) input associated with intensification has increased much more rapidly than N use in these systems. The resulting nitrogen surplus increases the risk of environmental pollution as well as production costs. Limited information on N dynamics in RW systems in relation to water management hampers development of management practices leading to more efficient use of nitrogen and water. The present work studied the effects of N and water management on yields of rice and wheat, and nitrogen use efficiencies (NUEs) in RW systems. A RW field experiment with nitrogen rates from 0 to 300 kg N/ha with continuously flooded and intermittently irrigated rice crops was carried out at the Jiangpu experimental station of Nanjing Agricultural University of China from 2002 to 2004 to identify improved nitrogen management practices in terms of land productivity and NUE.

Nitrogen uptake by rice and wheat increased with increasing N rates, while agronomic NUE (kg grain/kg N applied) declined at rates exceeding 150 kg N/ha. The highest combined grain yields of rice and wheat were obtained at 150 and 300 kg N/ha per season in rice and wheat, respectively. Carry-over of residual N from rice to the subsequent wheat crop was limited, consistent with low soil nitrate after rice harvest. Total soil N hardly changed during the experiment, while soil nitrate was much lower after wheat than after rice harvest. Water management did not affect yield and N uptake by rice, but apparent N recovery was higher under intermittent irrigation (II). In one season, II management in rice resulted in higher yield and N uptake in the subsequent wheat season. Uptake of indigenous soil N was much higher in rice than in wheat, while in rice it was much higher than values reported in the literature, which may have consequences for nitrogen fertilizer recommendations based on indigenous N supply.

It is generally accepted that sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS), sucrose synthase (SuSy), ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase (AGPase), soluble starch synthase (SSS), granule-bound starch synthase (GBSS) and starch branching enzyme (SBE) play a key role in starch synthesis in wheat grains. Starch synthesis in wheat grains is influenced by genotype and environment. However, what is not known is the degree of variation in enzyme activities during starch accumulation of wheat cultivars field-grown in different water regimes. The present study was undertaken to determine whether irrigation patterns could cause differences in starch accumulation and activities of key enzymes involved in starch synthesis. Starch accumulation and related enzyme activities were investigated in two winter wheat varieties, JM20 and BY535, differing in grain starch content, under two irrigation patterns. Results showed that soil water deficit led to an increase at early grain filling and decrease during late grain filling in starch accumulation rate (SAR) and activities of key enzymes involved in starch synthesis, especially AGPase, SSS and SBE. Water deficit enhanced grain starch accumulation in two wheat cultivars, suggesting that rainfed treatments increase physiological activities during early grain filling and promote starch accumulation. Furthermore, the change of SAR is consistent with SuSy, AGPase, SSS and GBSS. The results suggest that these enzymes play a key role in starch synthesis, and the decrease of photosynthate produced in the source organ is not the factor inhibiting starch accumulation.
