Mixed trypanosome infection in wild Glossina pallidipes Aust.

Abstract

Mixed T. congolense and T. brucei appeared in mice when proboscis from 3 field collected G. pallidipes were individually inoculated into mice. One of these flies had earlier been shown by dissection, to have T. congolense and the other two had T. brucei infection. A comparison of the growth rates of T. congolense and T. brucei in mice revealed that T. brucei always overshadowed T. congolense. These observations highlight the significance of multiple trypanosome infections in the epidemiology of African trypanosomiasis.

Résumé

Le mélange T. congolense et T. brucei apparaît dans les sourris lorsque les trompes des trois mouches G. pallidipes collectées dans le champ d'experimentation etaient inoculees individuellement dans les sourris. Une des mouches avaient précocement montré par dissection être porteus de T. congolense alors que les 2 autres présentaient une infection à T. brucei. Une étude comparative des taux de croissance de T. congolense et T. brucei dans les sourris rèvèle que T. brucei eclipse toujours T. congolense. Ces observations montrent clairement l'importance des infections multiples dans l'èpidémiologie de la trypanosomiase africaine.
