After outlining the achievements of photographic sky monitoring at Sonneberg Observatory we describe a concept of a future CCD-based sky patrol. We suggest a world-wide network of 6 identical observing stations which cover the entire sky down to a limiting magnitude of ∼ 18TO and with a time resolution of between 8 and 24 hours. A preliminary technical design is proposed, and the astrophysical and general impact of such a project is briefly discussed.
