1 McSweeney's, William recent Roman Catholicism: The Search for Relevance (New York: St. Martin's Press, 1980; xvi + 272 pages, $25.00)Google Scholar is an excellent study of this intellectual ferment. McSweeney is a British sociologist and his work is a nice complement to Gilkey's, LangdonCatholicism Confronts Modernity (New York: Seabury, 1975)Google Scholar which is written from a theological point of view. McSweeney is critical about the murkiness of much of contemporary theological writing but his criticisms are incisively done and free of that hand-wringing which one finds in much conservative reaction to contemporary theological reflection.
