In situ observations of fossil and living specimens of the calcicolous mosses Bryum pseudotriquetrum, Cratoneuron commutatum and Catoscopium nigritum revealed very fast calcite depositional rates. Rhythmic layering in the fossil mosses corresponding with the seasonal climatic cycle suggests that the moss curtain occupied by these three mosses maintains the deposition of spongeous travertine layers at a mean rate of 4 cm a−1. A mean depositional rate of 4.2 cm a−1 may be calculated from measurements of the loss of bicarbonate from the springwater after it percolated through the moss curtain. These rates suggest that the 8 m high travertine terrace of Checa with a surface area of 800 m2 did not exist two millennia ago.

Mosses could be put to man's use for creating natural overgrowths on artificial surfaces, an idea based on an allusion by Wallner. He observed that the thread-forming, blue-green algae Vaucheria builds travertine deposits at an annual rate of 0.7–1.4 cm. We observed that the mosses Cratoneuron commutatum and Bryum pseudotriquetrum may form spongeous travertine layers at respective maximum rates of 11 and 14 cm a−1. This would reduce the time required to build natural overgrowths on artificial objects to a practical period of months.

Large elongated euhedral olivines, resembling olivines appearing in crescumulates, from dunite bodies of ophiolite mantle sequences have been subjected to a detailed structural and fabric study. Localities from the Semail Ophiolite, Oman and the Vourinos Complex, Greece are described. The studies indicate that the regional mantle flow structures control the shape and crystallographic orientation of the large euhedral olivines, which are elongated parallel to [001] and flattened parallel to (100) due to syntectonic high temperature metamorphic growth. The growth is controlled by the deformation such that grains oriented unsuitable for slip are growing whereas grains with other orientations are selectively deformed. This being so there may be more than one interpretation of crescumulate textures developed in environments that have suffered a penetrative deformation.

Caledonian and Hercynian faults in Iar Connacht have been examined for evidence of Quaternary movements. Dip–slip displacements are detected, both through preservation of scarps and, in areas of greater denudation, through morphological offsets. The principle sites of this phenomenon are the Maum, Clifden and Gabhla-Shannaveara faults. Tectonic scarps are distinguished from those due to differential erosion and glacial scour. Earthquake risk in Iar Connacht, though slight, is not non-existent.

Eight new K-Ar determinations are presented which, together with field relations and previous studies, are used to construct a chronology of the volcanic build-up of Fuerteventura. The earliest island-building volcanics are late Cretaceous to early Tertiary alkaline basaltic volcaniclastic sediments, and these may be correlated with the early gabbro/pyroxenite intrusions which were probably subvolcanic to the early edifice. This was followed by a carbonatitic subvolcanic complex then by two later high-level gabbro/pyroxenite plutons, the latter being early Miocene or older. The emplacement of a subsequent middle Miocene gabbro/syenite ring complex caused widespread resetting of the Ar contents of the earlier rocks, but nevertheless consideration of the mineralogy of the rocks in conjunction with the field relations enables the long volcanic history (c. 80 Ma) to be reconstructed.

Interactive digital processing of multispectral satellite images (Landsat MSS) using principal components transformations and spatial filtering has clarified the position of continuous sutures linking apparently isolated Pan African (late Proterozoic) ophiolites. These have been field-checked and an arrangement of Pan African suture zones is proposed. Spatial filtering has also highlighted faults with various trends which can be related to the late Precambrian tectonics of the Horn of Africa region.

Conodont colour alteration index (CAI) values from Upper Paleozoic rocks in the Cantabrian zone of northern Spain show that temperatures during Hercynian metamorphism locally exceeded 300 °C. Various temperature domains have been defined, which are generally separated by fundamental structures. These domains do not correspond with the tripartite subdivision based on stratigraphic analysis.

The observed CAI values of conodonts are in general agreement with the mineral paragenesis. Areas with high CAI values display extensive alteration and mineralization, and where CAI values exceed 4–4.5 (>200 °C) slaty cleavage has developed.

The Cantabrian zone is an area of very low grade metamorphism, where peak conditions were reached in Upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian times. The characteristics of the metamorphism and its spatial relationship with major faults suggest that fluids were the main source for regional heating and that fluid transport was focussed along crustal-scale structural features.

The overall deformation regime in this part of the Variscan orogen of western Europe is interpreted to be large-scale transtension. This is in agreement with earlier proposed models for the formation of Upper Palaeozoic basins in this area.

The Carboniferous fossil plants from the Severn Coalfield are described for the first time. They indicate a late Westphalian D age for these strata (Lobatopteris vestita Biozone) and are clearly similar to floras reported from the Forest of Dean Coalfield. There is also evidence that they can be correlated with the Grovesend Beds in the eastern part of the South Wales Coalfield. It seems that the start of sedimentation in the Forest of Dean and Severn coalfields is related to Leonian (late Hercynian) earth movements.

Homa Mountain is a well developed ijolite/carbonatite complex of Miocene to Quaternary age. Late stage olivine melilitite occurs as a satellite plug, parts of which show strong deuteric alteration to carbonate resulting in complete pseudomorphing of the melilite.

A second satellite centre exposes a grey carbonate tuff and accompanying dykes, all of which exhibit relic textures after an elongate, rectangular mineral also formerly believed to be melilite. Comparison with other recently described occurrences indicates however that the second centre erupted alkali-carbonatite and that the chief mineral originally present was nyerereite (Na2Ca(CO3)2). The field relationships and petrographic characters of both rock types are described and criteria are given which permit distinction between carbonated melilite and calcitized nyerereite. It is concluded that olivine melilitite and alkalicarbonatite are closely related in space and time.

Chlorite–mica stacks in the Wenlock turbidites have been studied using backscattered electron microscopy and electron microprobe analysis, combined with thin-section work and bulk rock chemical analysis. The stacks occur in fine sandstones and silt–mud turbidites and range in length from < 30 μm to 1.5 mm. They consist of interlayered packets of Fe-rich chlorite and mica.

Combined textural and chemical data suggest that many of the stacks represent altered detrital biotite micas. A four-stage alteration sequence is proposed:

(1) Subaerial alteration of biotite, in the source area, to interlayered biotite–hydrobiotite/vermiculite.

(2) Post-depositional collapse of vermiculite to form a mica phase under conditions of high K+/H+ in the sediment pore waters.

(3) Decrease in K+/H+ ratio, possibly due to H+ build up in the fermentation zone, causing alteration of biotite layers to chlorite.

(4) Kinking of the stacks and pressure solution of chlorite early in the development of cleavage.

The Northern Suture is a fault separating the Cretaceous Kohistan island arc terrain (northwest Himalayas) from Palaeozoic sediments of the Asian Plate to the north. The Kohistan arc includes volcanic and sedimentary rocks (andesitic lavas, tuffs, volcaniclastics, slates and limestones), metamorphosed to greenschist facies and intruded by the two-phase Kohistan Batholith. Asian continental margin sediments are mainly of shelf type, are variably metamorphosed and intruded by the Karakoram Batholith. The Northern Suture is a zone of melange from 150 m to 4 km wide, and contains blocks of volcanic greenstone, limestone, red shale, conglomerate, quartzite and serpentinite in a slate matrix. It has a strong planar fabric; but in many places bedding is preserved in blocks and matrix, and depositional rather than tectonic contacts are seen between the two. The melange is inferred to be an olistostrome largely derived from the Kohistan arc, formed in a small back-arc basin between Kohistan and Asia. Limestone blocks in the melange are dated as Aptian–Albian; post-tectonic intrusions yield radiometric ages from 111 to 62 Ma. The Northern Suture therefore probably formed in the early Late Cretaceous during closure of the back-arc basin. The Tethys ocean lay south of Kohistan, where the Main Mantle Thrust represents the westward continuation of the Indus–Tsangpo Suture.

The swarm of Palaeocene inclined sheets around Loch Scridain in southwest Mull includes basaltic sheets which contain abundant metasedimentary xenoliths that show evidence for having been partially molten. In contrast with the majority of dyke-like conduits worldwide, which have essentially planar margins, the contact of one of these xenolithic sheets with Moine metasediments is irregular along a segment where it crosses interbedded psammites and pelites. Relatively fusible mica schists have been excavated by the magma, on either side of a massive refractory quartzite horizon. Furthermore, the dolerite of the sheet shows only a slight reduction of grain size, through a zone 0.5 m wide, adjacent to its margin, in contrast with the pronounced marginal chilling which characterizes most intrusions of the Loch Scridain swarm. These field relationships are interpreted as evidence that the basic magma which formed this sheet flowed with local turbulence during its emplacement. The estimated liquidus of the magma (1130 °C at 1 atm) is approximately 200 °C above the solidus of pelitic horizons in the country rock, but far below the solidus of the quartzites.

The second derivative of gravity anomalies of the Qattara area was analysed and statistically studied for determining the tectonic elements. Zones of zero second derivative were considered as the locations of possible faults. The analysis of a constructed tectonic map portrays the predominance of N45°W, N85°E and N45°E fault trends in addition to less pronounced N15°E and N–S faults. The NW–SE faults are very old and inherited from the basement structures. They acted as first order right-lateral wrench faults during the Alpine tectonism. Second and higher orders of faults, developed as a consequence of these movements, are represented by the N85°E and other less abundant trends. Vertical movements along the existing fault system, in addition to the horizontal displacement, is supported by the analysis of the pronounced anomalies of the second derivative map. The subsurface structural picture of the area is composed of uplifted and downfaulted adjoining blocks.

Wall rocks on either side of narrow fluorite veins cutting Dinantian Limestones at Butts Quarry, Derbyshire, exhibit unusual and spectacular alteration structures. Buff, ‘blackened’ and grey limestone lithologies, containing significant amounts of euhedral quartz crystals, occur in a zoned sequence adjacent to the veins. The alteration structures are attributed to a two-stage process involving silicification and subsequent re-mobilization of silica by fluids passing along the vein.

Facies descriptions and environmental interpretations are given for outstanding sections of marine Tithonian to Hauterivian strata in the High Cordillera of the central Chilean Andes. Comparisons are made with correlative strata in other regions in Chile, and with the Neuquén Basin of west central Argentina. The rich and partly endemic bivalve fauna, which has strong African affinities, shows no change up the stratigrapic sequence that cannot be related to local facies. Water depth is recognized as the main variable controlling the distribution of the bivalve and ammonite faunas. Utilizing data from both Chile and Argentina, a model is put forward for the late Jurassic to mid Cretaceous sequence whereby the facies distributions are accounted for by the interaction of global sea-level changes and regional tectonics in a shallow back-arc basin.
