The area under hybrid maize cultivation is increasing rapidly across South Asia. However, information regarding the proper nutrient management for modern stay-green maize hybrids in India is not adequate resulting in low productivity. Existing nutrient management practices are not able to capture the momentum change in the scenario of soil nutrient supply capacity and plant nutrient demand for achieving higher yield target. The present study aims at establishing the site-specific nutrient management (SSNM) package for an inceptisol (West Bengal, India). Soil indigenous nutrient supply capacity and nutrient use efficiency was also evaluated by using the nutrient omission plot technique. The experiment was laid out in strip-plot design, assigning three maize hybrids (P 3522, P 3396 and Rajkumar) in the vertical strip and nine fertilizer treatments [50% RDF/Recommended dose of fertilizer, 75% RDF, 100% RDF (200-60-60 kg N-P2O5-K2O ha−1), 125% RDF, 150% RDF, 100% PK, 100% NK, 100% NP and control (zero-NPK)] in the horizontal strip, with three replications. Results of the experiment revealed that the differences among cultivars were generally non-significant. The maize hybrids showed greater yield response to fertilization with N (4.14 Mg ha−1) during winter, followed by K (2.54 Mg ha−1) and P (1.58 Mg ha−1). Indigenous nutrient supply was estimated 107.2, 37.6 and 107.7 kg ha−1 for N, P and K, respectively. Both average agronomic efficiency (AE) and recovery efficiency (RE) were increased with 50% RDF and it decreased with further increase in NPK levels up to 150% RDF. The average internal efficiency (IE) was higher with 50% RDF closely followed by the treatment with absence of N. As grain yields and gross return over fertilizer (GRF) under 75 to 150% NPK treatments were similar, nutrient doses of 150 kg N, 45 kg P2O5 and 45 kg K2O ha−1 were recommended as optimum for maize hybrids.

Integrated crop-livestock farming in the Guinea savanna of West Africa is often assumed to lead to synergies between crop and livestock production, thereby improving the overall productivity and resilience of agricultural production. Whether these synergies actually occur remains poorly studied. On-farm trials were conducted in northern Nigeria over a period of four years to assess the agronomic and economic performance of maize-legume systems with and without the integration of livestock (goats). Groundnut-maize rotations with livestock achieved the highest carry-over of nutrients as manure from one season to the next, covering approximately one-third of the expected N, P and K uptake by maize and reducing the demand for synthetic fertilizers. However, the advantage of lower fertilizer costs in rotations with livestock was offset by higher labour costs for manure application and slightly lower values of maize grain. Overall, no clear agronomic or economic benefits for crop production were observed from the combined application of manure and synthetic fertilizer over the application of synthetic fertilizer only, probably because the amounts of manure applied were relatively small. Legume-maize rotations achieved higher cereal yields, a better response to labour and fertilizer inputs, and a higher profitability than maize-based systems with no or only a small legume component, irrespective of the presence of livestock. Livestock at or near the farm could nevertheless make legume cultivation economically more attractive by increasing the value of legume haulms. The results suggested that factors other than crop benefits, e.g. livestock providing tangible and non-tangible benefits and opportunities for animal traction, could be important drivers for the ongoing integration of crop and livestock production in the savanna.

Several parameters of seed vigour were monitored during seed development and maturation in three contrasting genotypes of soyabean (Glycine max)— the USA cv. Bossier, the Indonesian line TGM 737p, and the cross between these two parents TGx 536–02D—grown in three different temperature regimes. Evidence of a decline in seed quality in the pre-harvest environment was seldom detected until harvest maturity, when seed moisture content had declined naturally to 14–15%. Atypically, an increase in the susceptibility of freshly-harvested shelled seeds to imbibition damage was detected before harvest maturity for cv. Bossier in the two warmer regimes. Seeds of cv. Bossier were also far more vulnerable after harvest maturity to pre-harvest deterioration in the warmer environment than the other two genotypes. From these results and those from two earlier studies, it would appear that the main seed quality characteristic of TGm 737p that has been incorporated successfully into the cross is resistance to soaking damage, rather than enhanced air-dry seed storage longevity per se.

Desarrollo y vigor de la semilla en la soja

Combined socio-economic and agronomic surveys were conducted during two growing seasons with 20 rice (Orgyza sativa) farmers in the irrigation scheme of Guédé, northern Senegal. Farmers' knowledge of recommended cropping practices was relatively poor. The surveys identified sub-optimal timing of N fertilizer application and late harvesting as major constraints. Before the start of the second season, farmers were given field-specific recommendations on timing of key crop-management interventions. Average yield compared with the first season increased by more than 1 t ha−1, which was attributed to a slightly higher recovery efficiency of fertilizer N (REN) (average: 0.47 kg crop N kg−1 fertilizer N), a change in cultivars used (resulting in a better uptake of indigenous soil N) and more favourable weather conditions in general. It is concluded that if farmers are given better access to information, improved rice technologies, inputs and decision making, rice production on irrigated land in West Africa may leap forward rapidly, as potential production gains are still large.

Under controlled environment conditions a semi-dwarf wheat, Mexico 120, was subjected to temperature regimes representative of the extremes that occur during the dry (winter) season of the Ord River valley in northern Australia. High temperatures (35°C by day: 18°C by night) such as occur at the beginning and end of the dry season were compared with low temperatures (30°C by day: 13°C by night) such as occur in mid-season. Day length was constant at 12 hours. High temperatures from floral initiation onwards adversely affected floret development, and after ear emergence reduced grain filling to nil. Net assimilation rates were reduced by high temperatures. Major effects on yields were caused by high temperatures well before anthesis. The critical temperature after anthesis is apparently between 32° and 35°C.

In order to assess the response of cocoa trees to drought, changes in water status, gas exchange, leaf carbon isotopic ratio (δ13C), photochemical activity, and leaf N and chlorophyll content during the rainy and dry season were measured in 31 Venezuelan cocoa clones (17 Trinitarios, 6 Criollos, and 8 Modern Criollos) grown in a common garden. Drought caused a 40% decrease in water potential (ψ) in all but the Modern Criollos, and a reduction in net photosynthetic rate (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) without an increase in instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) in 93% of clones, and an increase in δ13C (long-term WUE) in 74% of clones; these responses suggest differences in tolerance to drought among clones. A positive correlation between A and both gs and leaf N content was found for all genotypes. Leaf N content, chlorophyll content, and photochemical activity were reduced during drought, suggesting that metabolism was also inhibited. The best performance during drought was shown by Modern Criollos with the highest WUE, while five Trinitario clones seemed to be less sensitive to drought, since neither chlorophyll, N, total soluble protein concentration, nor gs changed with drought, indicating that those Trinitario clones, with lower A, have a conservative water use. Modern Criollos showed no reductions in either ψ or gs; A remained unchanged, as did WUE, which was the highest, suggesting that these clones would be more successful in environments with low water availability. Our results indicate large variation in physiological response to drought over a range of parameters, suggesting possible differences in tolerance among clones.

A simulation model describing the growth and yield of tea (Camellia sinensis L.) is described. The model simulates the behaviour of a population of shoots which develop and extend independently at different rates to simulate the variation observed in natural conditions. The development of each shoot is divided into three phases corresponding to the resting, quiescent and bud-burst phases in temperate trees, with the rate of development in each phase being influenced by temperature, photoperiod and saturation deficit. Photoperiod also influences the onset and release of bud dormancy, and therefore the numbers of actively growing shoots at any one time. As shoots are generally harvested at a specific developmental state or size, the number of shoots plucked at each harvest is the main determinant of yield variation. Sensitivity analysis using annual yields as the output indicated that the model was most sensitive to the values of the two critical photoperiod parameters controlling bud dormancy and shoot development. Good agreement was found between model predictions and observed yields for an experiment in well-irrigated tea in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, but further testing is necessary before it can be used with confidence in a wider range of environments.

Small ruminants are an integral part of mixed-farming systems throughout southern Ethiopia. Yet, they have received little research attention or institutional support. Characterizing the existing small ruminant production systems and analysing their production constraints are important tools to diagnose the status and trends of the systems, and thus to identify areas for future interventions. A survey was conducted between April and July 2004 in the Adilo and Kofele areas of the southern mixed-farming systems of Ethiopia to explore reasons for keeping small ruminants and to evaluate the existing status of and the prospects for the small ruminant sector. Additional information was obtained during discussions with key informants who had experience of small ruminant keeping. Small ruminants fill several roles in the study area. However, the principal purpose of keeping sheep and goats was to generate cash income. Sheep milk consumption was widespread around Kofele unlike most agricultural systems in the country. Nearly all respondents in Adilo reported fattening their sheep before sale, while such a practice was uncommon in Kofele. Informal insurance schemes were evolving among the sheep keepers in Adilo, and these can be considered as entry points for future interventions. The common problem identified from both individual interviews and group discussions was feed shortage. The identification of alternative feed resources and strategic feeding management might be options for development. Small ruminant disease was the major constraint in Kofele, where marshy areas are increasingly assigned for grazing in the rainy season as suitable land is more and more used for cropping. The growing demand for meat from small ruminants, the improving transportation infrastructure and the experience of farmers in small ruminant keeping are providing opportunities to enhance the contribution of the sector. A thorough monitoring of the productive and economic performance of small ruminants is required to capture the full picture of their contribution thereby directing possible intervention areas to maximize benefits to the farmers.

A combination of agro-ecological and socioeconomic factors gave rise to the current weed epidemic of Phalaris minor, threatening the sustainability of wheat (Triticum aestivum) production and rural livelihoods across a large area of the Indo-Gangetic plains in northern India. This paper presents the results of a system audit describing the current status of the P. minor epidemic in Haryana State, India, in a broad agronomic and socioeconomic context. The audit showed that the P. minor epidemic is a major production constraint for many farmers, and seriously affects farm profitability. It suggests that the epidemic is closely entangled with geographic factors, as well as farm management systems and farmers' socioeconomic positions. Since the farmer community is not a homogeneous group with respect to P. minor management, nor in ability to change farm management practices, farmers are not equally receptive to technical innovations aimed at improving sustainability of wheat production.

Farmer-managed trials with browse trees were undertaken at two locations in southeast Nigeria. The fast-growing tree species Leucaena leucocephala and Gliricidia sepium were either inter-planted with crops as alley farms or planted in pure stands as intensive feed gardens. At both locations, most of the trees established successfully under farmer management. However, the quality of establishment was uneven, and the rate of utilization generally poor, especially at one site. The limited success of the trials is traced to a number of related sociological, institutional and edaphic factors. These include poor soil fertility; the incompatibility of established cropping patterns and rotation practices with the planting of trees on farms; the division of labour and organization of decision-making within the household; and land and tree tenure rules. It is argued that farmer-managed trials are necessary to reveal the importance of sociological and institutional factors in farmers' decision making, and that such trials require a high level of farmer autonomy in their management.

Grain yield of maize (Zea mays L.) was decreased by 30, 38 and 34 kg ha−1 for each day by which sowing was delayed after the first planting in March in 1978, 1980 and 1981, respectively. Yield reduction was associated with reduced plant size (plant and ear heights, tassel weight and branch numbers), ear number, ear weight, grain weight, ear length, ear diameter and kernel weight. High yields can thus be obtained by planting with the first rains of the year, especially if a good rate of emergence and seedling vigour under relatively hot, dry soil conditions can be ensured either culturally or genetically.

The residual effects of subsoil compaction (below 0.15 m depth) on soil properties, growth, yields and nutrient uptake by irrigated wheat (Triticum aestivum) and cotton (Gossipium hirsutum) are reported. The study was initiated during 1997 on a sandy clay loam soil in a semiarid region of Pakistan. Results showed that the adverse effects of subsoil compaction on bulk density, penetration resistance, total porosity and air-filled porosity of soil persisted for at least four years. In the third and fourth years after the imposition of treatments, compaction decreased yields of wheat by 12–18% and by 7% for cotton. The corresponding reductions in nutrient uptake by wheat were 11–16% for N, 11–15% for P and 5–10% for K. For cotton, the values were 9% for N, 3% for P and 7% for K. Subsoil compaction decreased nutrient use efficiency by 16% in wheat and 5% in cotton. The reductions in water use efficiency were estimated to be 11% in wheat and 7% in cotton. Wheat root length density was also decreased in the subsoil.

Boron deficiency in cotton occurs widely in northern Nigeria, where its extent and severity appear to be increasing, particularly under intensive agriculture. The deficiency may be aggravated by fertilizer application, specially nitrogen. Soil boron status varies greatly but is generally very low and often less than is considered necessary elsewhere. Superphosphate containing added boron corrects deficiency safely and satisfactorily.

The design of field trials sometimes raises queries (which often go unanswered) about alternative designs and the best ways of allowing for environmental variation in the area allotted to the experiment. It is shown how recent developments in iterative methods for working out analyses of variance make possible the determination of error for systems of blocks other than the one actually used, and also for the row-and-column case. Some suggestions are also made for judging the error to be expected if plots were made larger.

Reports of cassava root rot disease from different African countries have increased in recent times. Field studies were conducted from July 1998 to October 1999 to determine a reproducible disease assessment method that would allow the comparison of results from different locations and an evaluation of the relationship between disease severity and root yield. Single point disease assessments at 6, 9, 12 and 15 months after planting (MAP) were compared to multiple points assessment based on the area under a disease progress curve (AUDPC). Single point assessments at 12 and 15 MAP, and the AUDPC identified continuous variation (p≤0.01) among the genotypes. However, a consistent result across trials was obtained only with the assessment based on AUDPC. Root dry yield (DYLD) at 15 MAP showed a strong negative correlation with AUDPC (r=−0.74). Regression analysis also confirmed the negative relationship between yield and root rot severity. The five genotypes compared were separated into resistant (91/02324, 30572 and 92/0427) and susceptible (92/0057 and TME-1) groups. It was concluded that root rot disease may cause significant yield loss; however, the magnitude of the yield loss will depend on the susceptibility of the cassava genotype.

Projections suggest that annual per capita water availability in the Indo-Ganga Basin (IGB) will reduce to a level typical for water-stressed areas. Producing more crop and livestock products, per unit of agricultural water invested, is advocated as a key strategy for future food production and environmental security in the basin. The objective of this study was to understand the spatio-temporal dynamics of water requirements for livestock feed production, attendant livestock water productivity (LWP) and implications for the future sustainable use of water resources. We focused on three districts in the IGB representing intensive (higher external inputs, e.g. fertilizer, water) and semi-intensive (limited external input) crop-livestock systems. LWP is estimated based on principles of water accounting and is defined as the ratio of livestock beneficial outputs and services to the water depleted and degraded in producing these. In calculating LWP and crop water productivity (CWP), livestock, land use, land productivity and climatic data were required. We used secondary data sources from the study districts, field observations and discussions with key informants to generate those data sets. Our result showed that the volume of water depleted for livestock feed production varied among the study systems and was highly affected by the type of feed and the attendant agronomic factors (e.g. cropping pattern, yield). LWP value was higher for intensive systems and affected by agricultural water partitioning approaches (harvest index, metaolizable energy). LWP tended to decrease between 1992 and 2003. This can be accounted for by the shift to a feeding regime that depletes more water despite its positive impacts on animal productivity. This is a challenging trend with the advent of and advocacy for producing more agricultural products using the same or lower volume of water input and evokes a need for balanced feeding, by considering the nutritive value, costs and water productivity of feed, and better livestock management to improve LWP.

Cotton–wheat (CW) is the second most important cropping system after rice–wheat in South Asia. Sowing of wheat after cotton is usually delayed due to late pickings coupled with time needed for seedbed preparation, resulting in low wheat yield. Lack of suitable machinery is a major constraint to direct drilling of wheat into the heavy cotton stubbles. An innovative approach with much promise is the ‘2-wheel tractor-based self-propelled relay seeder’ with seed-cum-fertilizer attachment. On-farm trials were conducted at four locations during 2009–2010 and at 10 locations during 2010–2011 to evaluate the following four wheat establishment methods in CW-dominated areas of south-western Punjab, India: (1) zero till seeding in standing cotton using a self-propelled relay seeder, (2) relay seeding in standing cotton with a manual drill without prior tillage (2010 only), (3) relay broadcast seeding in standing cotton following light manual tillage and (4) conventional sowing of wheat after cotton harvest (conventional tillage and sowing with a seed–fertilizer drill). Planting of wheat under conventional practice was delayed by 20–44 days compared with relay seeding. Seed cotton yield was also significantly higher with relay seeding due to opportunity for one additional picking. Yield of wheat sown with the self-propelled relay seeder was 41.2% and 11.8% higher than with conventional practice in 2009–2010 and 2010–2011 respectively. The increase in wheat yield under relay seeding of wheat was primarily due to higher spike density and more grains per spike. The net income from the CW system was 28.2% higher for the self-propelled relay seeder than with conventional sowing.

Post-anthesis trends in yield and forage quality of dry matter in components of the maize shoot were studied in experiments with barren and fertile plants grown at 10 plants/m2. In fertile plants, which had a maximum shoot DW 6 or 7% higher than barren ones, the stems (including leaf sheaths) yielded 5 t/ha (42% shoot DW) 30 days after flowering, declining to 3·5 t/ha (26% DW) at final harvest 60 days later. During this period the ear increased by more than 4 t/ha, from 23 to 50% of shoot DW, whereas in barren plants there was little change in DM distribution, with the stem representing about 48% shoot DW, leaf and husk together 40–45% and the ear (rachis only) less than 10%. DM percentage of shoots was similar in barren and fertile plants until maximum DW was attained about 60 days after flowering, after which fertile plants dried more rapidly. In vitro dry matter digestibility was as high in barren as in fertile plants, and the analytical data on forage quality do not suggest that it was positively associated with grain content.

Four standard Nigerian varieties of sorghum were grown in trials together with local varieties representative of sorghums from each of the five main ecological zones. Analysis of the data showed a relation within each zone between mean yield and time of heading. When the standard varieties and the local varieties flowered simultaneously, yields were similar. When the standard varieties flowered later—or in some cases earlier—than the local varieties, the local varieties out-yielded them.
