Two shrub species, Atriplex halimus L. and Salsola vermiculata L., are considered useful for rehabilitation of degraded rangelands in west Asia and north Africa. They can be established from direct seeding and are capable of self-sowing. In this study, seed storage at different temperatures and the influence of fruiting bracts on seed germination were examined for the two species during two seasons. Fruits (utricles) were stored at 20–22°C (room temperature), 0°C or −22°C. Germination tests were carried out after 33, 56, 90, 152, 272 and 397 d in storage in the first season and after 44, 76, 104, 170, 288 and 412 d in the second season. Seeds were germinated in their fruiting bracts or after bract removal. Bract removal significantly improved seed germination of both shrubs regardless of storage temperature. For S. vermiculata the increase in germination was in the range of 1.3- to 14.7-fold compared with values for the intact fruit in Season 1 and 0.5 to 3.8 in Season 2. Similarly the ranges for A. halimus were 0.5- to 4.2-fold and 0.7- to 5.3-fold in the two seasons respectively. The effect of cold storage was greater on Salsola than on Atriplex. The reduction of the storage temperature from 21°C to 0°C and −22°C increased the longevity of S. vermiculata seeds by 2.8–46.6 times in Season 1 and by 2.9–2.6 times in Season 2. There was little or no effect on the longevity of A. halimus. A leachate prepared by soaking fruiting bracts from S. vermiculata significantly depressed germination (p < 0.01), the effect being greater on Salsola seeds (20% reduction) than on Atriplex seeds (8% reduction). A leachate from A. halimus produced a slight but non-significant reduction in germination.

This paper analyses the organization of the rice seed sector in Guinea with the overall objectives to assess how organizational settings affect seed supply to small-scale farmers and to suggest institutional changes that would favour seed service and uptake of varieties. Data were collected in Guinea, West Africa, using focus group discussions with extension workers, farmers, representatives of farmers’ associations, agro-input dealers, researchers and non-governmental organization (NGO) staff, and surveys of 91 rice farming households and 41 local seed dealers. Findings suggest that the current institutional settings and perceptions of stakeholders from the formal seed sector inhibit smallholder farmers’ access to seed. Seed interventions in the past two decades have mainly relied on the national extension system, the research institute, NGOs, farmers’ associations and contract seed producers to ensure seed delivery. Although local seed dealers play a central role in providing seed to farmers, governmental organizations operating in a linear model of formal seed sector development have so far ignored their role. We discuss the need to find common ground and alternative models of seed sector development. In particular we suggest the involvement of local seed dealers in seed development activities to better link the formal and the informal seed systems and improve smallholder farmers’ access to seed from the formal sector.

Results from field experiments showed that number of mature grains per plant was related to the plant growth rate during the pre-flowering period. This relation was further improved when growth rate was expressed relative to the rate of plant development. This evidence supports the theory that grain abortion is linked with assimilate production.

Accumulation curves for N, P, K and Ca were determined for intercropped maize and cowpeas given different fertilizer combinations. Both species competed for these four elements, with cowpeas suffering relatively more than maize. A concept of a Nutrient Supplementation Index (NSI) was developed to aid studies on fertilization of crop mixtures. Using this index, it was estimated that an additional 9.7, 24.0, 9.7 and 30.6% of N, P, K and Ca, respectively (based on the requirement of sole-crop maize), might be needed to satisfy the combined needs of a 1:1 row maize–cowpea intercrop.

This study was conducted to improve wheat production under vegetative (early season) drought stress. Hydroprimed and osmoprimed (with CaCl2) seeds of wheat cultivars Lasani-2008 (LS-2008) and Triple Dwarf-1 (TD-1), were sown in 20 (narrow), 25 (medium), and 30 cm (wider) spaced rows. Crop was grown under well-watered conditions till physiological maturity or was subjected to drought stress (50% field capacity) during vegetative phase and then grown under well-watered conditions. Drought stress caused substantial reduction in grain and biological yields, related traits, harvest index (HI) and water use efficiency (WUE). Nonetheless, planting osmoprimed seeds in narrowly spaced rows significantly improved the grain yield, HI and WUE. However, wheat planted in wider rows had bold grains. Furthermore, wheat cultivar LS-2008 produced better yield, even under drought stress, than cultivar TD-1. Economic analysis indicated that planting osmoprimed seeds of wheat cultivar LS-2008 in narrowly spaced rows under early season drought yielded maximum economic benefits. In conclusion, planting osmoprimed seeds of cultivar LS-2008 in narrowly spaced rows is a good agronomic option to improve the wheat performance under early season drought stress.

The black teas produced from the field treatments described previously (Cloughley et al., 1983) were evaluated chemically and organoleptically. Increasing N application rates and harvesting larger shoots had adverse effects on the liquor quality as assessed by theaflavin (TF) analysis, and on the value of the product as assessed by tea tasters' sensory examination. There were also large, regular intraseasonal fluctuations in TF content, small values corresponding to occasions of crop peaks. Shoots predominantly of 2 or 3 leaves and a bud harvested from plots given 135 kg N ha−1 generated the largest total cash value. A total value index (TVI), involving yield and quality, is introduced and illustrated.

An experiment was carried out to assess the benefits of native arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) for banana plants cv. ‘Nendran’. The AMF species applied were Funneliformis mosseae and Glomus microcarpum, which were identified in a previous survey as the most common root associates of Musa spp. in traditional monoculture banana fields. Spores of both the AMF species isolated from the natural banana fields were mono-cultured and used in the experiment, individually and in combination, at two inoculum spore levels (2500 or 5000 spores). We evaluated the root colonising potential of AMFs and their effects on plant height, chlorophyll content and leaf N, P and K concentrations at regular intervals up to 90 days after inoculation. All the inoculated plants showed more than 80% root colonisation. Increase in chlorophyll content in the leaves was found significant in all treatments, with the exception of the combination of 5000 spores of F. mosseae and 5000 spores of G. microcarpum each. Increases in leaf N, P and K were found in all the inoculated plants as compared to control (sterile soil without any AMF). While a significant reduction in soil available nitrogen and soil pH was observed in all treatments with inoculation, the soil available phosphorus and soil total organic carbon were increased by inoculation. Overall data revealed positive effects of AMF species in banana, especially during its early growth. As AMF species were isolated from fields differing in relation to banana variety and soil type and have positive effects in banana nutrition, an integrated soil fertility management using AMF appears promising.

Most of the agricultural lands in the highlands of western Kenya are depleted of plant nutrients, particularly phosphorus. This depletion has resulted in a continued decline in crop production in the area. Recent experiments, in which direct application of indigenous phosphate rocks were evaluated, have yielded variable results, depending on the relative reactivity of the rock phosphate tested. The effectiveness of rock phosphate was generally low compared with fertilizers such as triple super phosphate. This is attributed to the relatively low solubility of the rocks as opposed to the readily water soluble phosphorus fertilizers. Phosphate rocks are available locally and are cheaper than triple super phosphate. If the solubility of these phosphate rocks could be improved, the resource-poor smallholder farmers in western Kenya would have an affordable source of phosphorus for their crops. Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of combining different on-farm organic materials with the Minjingu rock phosphate (from Tanzania) on the availability of phosphorus to maize (Zea mays) in western Kenya. The greenhouse results indicated that there were significant positive linear relationships between rock phosphate application rates and (i) the Olsen-extractable soil phosphorus in the soil samples taken four weeks and nine weeks respectively after the application of the treatments; (ii) the dry matter yield, and (iii) phosphorus uptake. Results of the field experiments showed that rock phosphate combined with farmyard manure or crop residues (maize stover) generally increased the Olsen-extractable soil phosphorus, maize yields and phosphorus uptake, particularly in the first season when both the Minjingu rock phosphate and organic materials were applied, but the effectiveness of the materials and their combinations varied between the two sites. Combining Minjingu rock phosphate with the organic materials improved its relative agronomic effectiveness for maize.

Four hybrids of pearl millet (Pennisetutn typhoides) were screened for photoperiod sensitivity in a heated temperate glasshouse and the effects of 12 h short day induction on the reproductive development and plant morphology were examined. All the hybrids (BK 560, MBH 104, MBH 110 and ICH 105) responded to 14 short days by a considerable reduction in the time to anthesis, plant height and the final number of leaves produced, without any adverse effect on head development. In another experiment BK 560 required at least four short days for floral initiation and another four for subsequent development. Short day induction had no apparent effect on the rate of leaf appearance. The results were compared to those reported for millets in general and to millets grown in the tropics.

Field experiments were conducted on two soils (clay loam and sandy loam) with varying texture and water table depth to study the effects of two planting methods (dry seeding and transplanting) on the root growth and grain yield of rainfed lowland rice. About 75% of the roots were found in the top 10 cm soil. Root length density at the flowering stage and grain yield in the sandy loam soil, with a water table deeper than 1.5 m, were less in dry-seeded than in transplanted rice, probably because of the greater moisture stress in dry-seeded rice between late tillering and harvest. In the clay loam soil, with the water table mostly at the soil surface, there was no difference in grain yield between dry-seeded and transplanted rice.

Identifying options for the sustainable intensification of cropping systems in southern Africa under prevailing high climate risk is needed. With this in mind, we tested an intercropping system that combined the staple crop maize with lablab, a local but underutilised legume. Grain and biomass productivity was determined for four variants (i) sole maize (sole-maize), (ii) sole lablab (sole-lablab), (iii) maize/lablab with both crops sown simultaneously (intercropped-SP) and (iv) maize/lablab with lablab sown 28 days after the maize crop (intercropped-DP). Soil water and weather data were monitored and evaluated. The trial was conducted for two seasons (2015/2016 and 2016/2017) at two sites in the Limpopo Province, South Africa: Univen (847 mm rainfall, 29.2 °C maximum and 18.9 °C minimum temperature average for the cropping season over the years 2008–2017) and Syferkuil (491 mm rainfall, with 27.0 °C maximum and 14.8 °C minimum temperature). Analysis revealed three key results: The treatment with intercropped-SP had significantly lower maize yields (2320 kg ha−1) compared with maize in intercropped-DP (2865 kg ha−1) or sole-maize (2623 kg ha−1). As expected, maize yields in the El Niño affected in season 2015/2016 were on average 1688 kg ha−1 lower than in 2016/2017. Maize yields were significantly lower (957 kg ha−1) at Univen, the warmer site with higher rainfall, than at Syferkuil. In 2015/2016, maximum temperature at Univen exceeded 40 °C around anthesis. Furthermore, soil water was close to the estimated permanent wilting point (PWP) for most of the cropping season, which indicates possible water limitations. In Syferkuil, the soil water was maintained well above PWP. Lablab yields were low, around 500 ha−1, but stable as they were not affected by treatment across season and site. Overall, the study demonstrated that intercropped-DP appears to use available soil water more efficiently than sole maize. Intercropped-DP could therefore be considered as an option for sustainable intensification under high climate risk and resource-limited conditions for smallholders in southern Africa.

Tall Nigerian Farafara and a dwarf line selected from the cross Combine Kafir 60 × Farafara were compared at Samaru in eight weekly sowings in 1969, which was a wet year, and 1970 which was rather dry. Whereas the dwarf line always gave more grain yield, its advantage over Farafara, and the effect of early sowing on its yield, were greater in the wetter year. In both varieties the date of flowering seemed to be determined mainly by photoperiod, but there was also a small but clear effect of sowing date.

A three-year trial was conducted on a degraded soil in the moist Guinea savanna of northern Nigeria to assess the possibility of improving productivity and economic viability of maize-based systems by incorporating short-season legumes and green manure crops into the cropping pattern. Treatments included double cropping legume-maize systems, full-season sole maize receiving various amounts of nitrogen, green manure crop mucuna (Mucuna pruriens var. utilis) followed by sole maize and a legume-maize system receiving additional rice mill waste. In comparison with full-season maize, the use of early-season cowpea followed by maize improved productivity as well as economic returns of the cropping system, while the use of mucuna, grown as an early-season crop or full-season crop, resulted in poor overall productivity of the system. The addition of rice mill waste as a soil amendment in cowpea–maize systems stimulated maize yields and rice mill waste can form a cheap source of organic inputs for farmers living nearby rice mills. Given the limited growing season of the northern Guinea savanna, it is concluded that timing of field operations is crucial for the successful application of double cropping systems. In addition, high labour requirements are a serious constraint for wide-scale adoption of double cropping systems by small-scale farmers, stressing the need to reduce soil cultivation operations, for example by maintaining a uniform ridge distance for all crops in the rotation.

Nitrogen (N) is a major nutrient that limits crop production in southern Africa. We hypothesized that coppicing tree legumes, which are integrated in cropping systems, would intercept leaching nutrients and could also increase topsoil N in nutrient-depleted soils. This hypothesis was verified in three ongoing experiments at Msekera (experiments 1 and 2) and Kagoro (experiment 3) in Zambia. Planted tree fallows of Gliricidia sepium, Leucaena leucocephala, Acacia angustisma, and Sesbania sesban were compared with natural fallows and with continuous maize cropping with or without fertilizer (no-tree) controls. Top and subsoil samples were taken in the tree treatments and in the no-tree controls to establish short and long-term tree effects on soil N dynamics. 15N was introduced at various soil depths down to 2 m to determine the vertical root-reach of coppicing trees. Samples taken on two different dates showed that planted trees are capable of capturing subsoil N. The amounts retrieved by trees in experiment 2 did not vary with depth or dates except for A. angustisma which retrieved more N from the top 0.20 m than from the subsoil. L. leucocephala and G. sepium had similar characteristics in terms of coppice biomass production and N content, and both species rooted to at least 2 m. G. sepium in a mixture with S. sesban, retrieved more applied N than when planted alone, implying that mixed fallows may be effective in resource capture. There was more inorganic-N in the topsoil of coppiced fallows was significantly higher than in unfertilized maize plots. Subsoil N accumulation was evident under fertilized maize plots. There was less subsoil nitrate-N beneath planted trees than beneath mono-cropped maize plots indicating that trees probably retrieved subsoil N. Maize yields subsequent to coppicing tree fallows were at least 170% higher than unfertilized controls indicating improved soil fertility status in the tree systems.

Time to flowering of mung bean crops varies appreciably depending on the genotype, and the daylengths and temperatures prevailing during the period after sowing. Relatively little is known about the precise nature and inheritance of flowering responses to photoperiod and temperature. The combined effects of variations in these two factors on time to flowering were therefore evaluated in controlled environment studies on six genotypes and four F1 hybrids. The responses were examined for conformity with hypothesized linear models from which inferences might be made of the genetic control of flowering. The analyses suggest that all the genotypes and F1s tested were quantitative short day plants, with the possible exception of one line which may be day neutral. The analyses further suggest that time to flowering was influenced by four genotype-specific attributes: minimum time to flowering, critical photoperiod (Pc), responsiveness to photoperiod longer than Pc, and responsiveness to temperature. Among the genotypes tested, different values were observed for each attribute. In most instances, the values for the F1s were closer to one or other parent, indicating dominance rather than additive genetic effects. We conclude that, with several levels each, the four attributes provide the potential for a diversity of flowering response types within mung bean. Further, it should prove possible to manipulate the mung bean germplasm to obtain novel combinations of attributes, and thus to breed genotypes adapted to photothermal regimes not previously considered suitable for the crop.

Low soil pH and associated soil infertility problems are considered to be amongst the major challenges to barley production in the highlands of Ethiopia. In response to this, an experiment was conducted at low soil pH (< 5 H2O) site on the effects of different levels of lime and phosphorus (P) fertilizer on soil pH, exchangeable aluminium (Al3+), grain yield and yield components of barley during 2010 and 2011 cropping seasons. The experiment comprised factorial combinations of five lime rates (0, 0.55, 1.1, 1.65 and 2.2 t ha−1) and four P rates (0, 10, 20 and 30 kg ha−1) in a randomized complete block design in three replications. The amount of lime that was applied at each level was calculated on the basis of Al3+. Results of soil analysis after 2 years of liming showed that liming significantly (P < 0.05) increased soil pH, and markedly reduced exchangeable Al3+. Liming at the rate of 0.55, 1.1, 1.65 and 2.2 t ha−1 decreased Al3+ by 0.88, 1.11, 1.20 and 1.19 mill equivalents per 100 g of soil, and increased soil pH by 0.48, 0.71, 0.85 and 1.1 units, respectively. Amongst the liming treatments, liming at the rate of 1.65 and 2.2 t ha−1 gave significantly (P < 0.05) the highest grain yield and yield components of barley. However, grain yield obtained by applications of 1.65 and 2.2 t ha−1 lime was statistically comparable. By additions of 10, 20 and 30 kg P ha−1, grain yield of barley increased by about 29, 55 and 66% as compared to control (without P). During 2010, however, the combined applications 1.65 t ha−1 lime and 30 kg P ha−1 gave 133% more grain yields of barley relative to control (without P and lime). Therefore, sustainable barley production on acid soils in the central highlands of Ethiopia should entail combined applications of both lime and P fertilizer.

Broad sense heritabilities were estimated in three long-term cocoa clone trials in Ghana, with 20, 18 and 15 entries. They were 0.15, 0.05 and 0.15 for yield in pods per plant, and 0.26, 0.19 and 0.40 for incidence of ‘bad’ pods, mostly due to black pod disease, caused by infection with Phytophthora spp. The low heritability of single plant yield, which has been known for 80 years, has been widely overlooked in cocoa research and extension, compromising the success of clone selection programmes. The heritability of the incidence of black pod disease is high enough to justify mass selection where family level data are not available. The findings will be applied in a new large-scale programme in Ghana to select clones that are high yielding in the presence of P. megakarya.

The growth of improved short varieties of rice with low and high tillering capacities was compared under a wide range of nitrogen levels and spacings. A high tillering variety performed better than a low tillering one under the experimental conditions tested. Leaf area index values as high as 10 to 12 were not detrimental to grain production unless the crop lodged.

Five types of mulches (black plastic, stone chippings and three types of grass) and a control were used on young clonal tea plants following transplanting. Soil temperature differences were observed in the first two years but disappeared when the tea canopy had developed to cover over 40% or more of the soil surface. Stem diameter, yield (during the first two years) and total dry matter production were positively correlated with soil temperatures over the range 14–21°C. Beneficial effects of raising soil temperature by black plastic mulch were short-lived, but the detrimental effect of reducing temperature by grass mulches was more severe and long lasting. Grass mulches induced shallow rooting, as a result of which the tea was more susceptible to drought.

The practice and management of subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) on heavy clay soils is poorly understood. Over-irrigation can lead to excessive runoff and drainage, with associated negative environmental consequences. Experiments were conducted in 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) in a Vertisol in Australia to evaluate the effect of SDI at various application rates on cotton yield and quality, and the results were compared with those for conventional furrow irrigation. Irrigating with SDI that supplied 50% or 75% of daily crop evapotranspiration (ETc) maintained a dry upper soil profile throughout the season. SDI at 50% ETc could potentially capture 250mm more rain during the season compared to SDI 90% ETc, and even more than furrow irrigation. However, supplying only 50% ETc with SDI hastened the maturity of the crop by on average 25 days compared with furrow irrigation and higher SDI rates, fewer bolls were set and yields were lower than in the other treatments. Nevertheless, a shorter season, if yield sacrifice is acceptable, favours logistics when integrating winter crops with summer cotton. It also reduces the number and cost of pesticide sprays and irrigation. Yield plateaued when 75% or more of daily ETc was supplied by SDI. The two drier treatments (SDI at 50% and 75% of ETc) had consistently higher water use efficiencies (WUE) for lint production compared with those of the two wetter SDI treatments (SDI at 90% and 105/120% ETc). All SDI treatments were also more efficient in the first year in the use of water for lint production than was furrow irrigation, but improved irrigation management in the form of faster irrigation and reduction of tail water in the second year obviated the advantage of SDI. Irrigation of cotton with SDI at 75% ETc offered significant benefits in terms of saved irrigation water over wetter SDI treatments, resulted in the highest average WUE for lint production over the two years, and reduced drainage and runoff compared with higher SDI rates and furrow irrigation.
