The MudMaster computer program, based on the modified Bertaut-Warren- Averbach (BWA) XRD method, was used in the study of diagenetic evolution of illitic material in shales. The illitic material was characterized by XRD as a mixture of illite-smectite (I-S) and discrete illite. The experimental conditions for complete dehydration of swelling clays, necessary in this method, were established for a climate of high relative humidity (RH >40%). It was found that the distribution of crystallite thickness of dehydrated illitic material of shales is described by the lognormal law, as was established earlier by the BWA method for pure I-S from pyroclastic rocks. The parameters characterizing this distribution evolve with depth: the mean crystallite thickness (Te), the distribution broadening (DW) and the parameter of a lognormal distribution (β2) increase, whereas the percentage of the most frequent crystallite thickness decreases. The observed scatter of values is not random but indicates fluctuations in the characteristics of the illitic material of shales. The results imply that the modified Scherrer technique of measuring mean crystal thickness from the broadening of XRD reflections can be extended at least to some shales.

The Tertiary basin of Feres consists of sedimentary rocks, andesitic-rhyolitic volcanic rocks of K-rich calc-alkaline affinities, rocks with calc-alkaline and shoshonitic affinities and volcaniclastic fall and flow deposits. Volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks have variable concentrations of LIL elements (Ba, Sr, Rb, Th) and HFS elements (Zr, V) due to their mode of origin. The pyroclastic flows frequently show more or less intense devitrification, vapour-phase crystallization and, in some cases, evidence of fumarolic activity, as is indicated by the presence of scapolite. The volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks display various types of alteration including formation of zeolites (clinoptilolite, heulandite, mordenite, and laumontite) and smectite, as well as hydrothermal alteration (development of silicic, argillic, sericitic and propylitic zones) associated with polymetallic mineralization. The behaviour of chemical elements during alteration varies. Some are immobile and their distribution is controlled by the conditions prevailing during parent-rock formation and emplacement, but others, such as Ba and Sr, are mobile and selectively fractionate in zeolite extra-framework sites. The formation of zeolite from alteration of volcanic glass is accompanied by an increase in Mg and Al content, and a decrease in Si and Na content, whereas Ca is not affected by alteration. In certain pyroclastic flows, there is a significant difference in K-content between incipient glass and altered rock, due to K-feldspar formation during devitrification and vapour-phase crystallization.

The diagenetic evolution of clay minerals in a 4249 m sedimentary-magmatic sequence of the Zemah-1 drillhole in the Dead Sea Rift, Israel, was studied, mainly by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The parallel maturation of the organic matter was estimated by the thermal alteration index (TAI) method. Both parameters follow a progressive diagenesis with depth. The original clays, now encountered only at shallow depths, were dioctahedral, and mostly detrital. They transformed into Mg-rich trioctahedral clays starting with a saponite-dominated assemblage, followed by a saponite, ordered chlorite-smectite (C-S), and chlorite assemblage, and finally by a saponite, corrensite, chlorite and talc assemblage. Significant mineralogical composition gaps occur between saponite to corrensite and corrensite to chlorite. Short-range variations within the most evolved assemblage are controlled by bulk-rock composition. Depths of first occurrence and disappearance of minerals indicate a much higher geothermal gradient in the past whereas the TAI values suggest an even higher palaeogradient of ∼708C km–1.

Expanded vermiculite with excellent thermal and chemical stability was investigated as a reliable sorbent for hazardous liquid spillages, including those leading to fire and explosion risks. Many expanded samples were prepared by rapid heating using both different temperatures and dissimilar vermiculite dimensions. Their capabilities for hazard clean-up were correlated with the structural characteristics of expanded vermiculite with slit-shaped porosity. When using optimized vermiculite, the moderate sorption capacities of 1.5–3.0 g g−1 were obtained for various hazardous chemicals, including hydrophilic/hydrophobic organic chemicals and strongly acidic/basic solutions. The sorption capacities depended more strongly on physical properties, such as the pore volume of the sorbent and the density of the absorbed liquid, rather than the vermiculite's chemical composition. The void space interconnected by interparticle/intraparticle pores worked as imbibing pathways due to their capillarity, resulting in the rapid, spontaneous sorption of hazardous chemicals. The hazardous chemicals may be removed from a testing vessel via sorption with an efficiency of >94 wt.% for 10 min. These results demonstrate that the expanded vermiculite may be a potential candidate as a reliable general-purpose sorbent for hazardous materials clean-up under harsh conditions.

The adsorption of C2H4 and H2 gases by bentonite from the Ünye region, Turkey both as raw (B) and as K+-, Li+-, Ag+- and Mg2+ -exchanged forms, was investigated using automated volumetric equipment and pressures up to 100 kPa at 273 K and 77 K, respectively. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and specific surface area measurement (BET) methods were employed to characterize the bentonite samples. The C2H4 and H2 gas adsorption capacities of the original and modified forms were in the ranges 1.817–0.201 mmol g−1 and 0.522–0.388 mmol g−1, respectively. The influence of salt modifications on the gas adsorption properties of bentonite is discussed.

The zeta potential and yield-stress behaviour of gels prepared from as-received SHCa-1 hectorite (Ht) containing 50 wt.% impurities, mainly of calcite, dolomite and quartz, were characterized. The zeta potential is negative in the pH range 4–12. At pH <5, reaction of CaCO3 producing CO2 and Ca2+ increased the solution conductivity significantly and reduced the zeta potential. The buffering effect due to this chemical reaction was also observed in the yield stress–pH characterization below pH 8. Low yield stress was observed below pH 6 and above pH 12. The yield stress peaked at pH ~8, where Ht displayed a zeta potential of –20 mV. The relationship between maximum yield stress and Ht content (wt.%) was linear and was not affected by impurities. The ageing behaviour was characterized by an initial phase of rapid yield-stress increase and then by a phase of gradual increase. The Leong model performed better than the two-parameter glassy polymer ageing model in describing this ageing behaviour. However, the empirical power law model was more accurate. The timescale of the ageing process is long, lasting several days. An open cellular microstructure was observed to form in the gels. Impurities appeared not to interact with or bind to the Ht platelets.

Mineralogical properties (XRD, DTG) and chemical compositions of some chlorite-smectite interlayer minerals in alteration products of ophiolitic rocks from the Northern Apennines are presented and discussed. The presence of iron hydroxides and the continuous variation in Al2O3 content suggest that the corrensites are intermediate stages in the process of alteration of chlorite to smectite in an environment characterized by high element mobility. A thermal test to characterize the swelling component of the interlayer species is proposed.

The chemical and mineralogical compositions, the pore-diameter distribution, and the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and infrared spectroscopy of kaolin from Suzhou, China, and the physicochemical and catalytic properties of a catalyst prepared from that kaolin, are presented in this paper. Crystallized microspheres (CMR) containing ~30% NaY zeolite can be prepared from the Suzhou kaolin. The catalyst produced performs better than a standard commercial catalyst in terms of activity, attrition resistance, resistance to passivation by Ni and V and better gasoline and coke selectivity.

A new method for the determination of the base exchange capacity of small samples of clay minerals has been described by H. van Olphen (1950, 1951). The method is based on the exchange of the exchangeable cations against large organic cations; for the latter, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (lissolamine) was used. The point of complete exchange can be detected by an emulsification test: at the point of equivalence the clay becomes an excellent emulsifier for oilwater systems; this is supposed to be due to its being at one and the same time oleophilic at the surface and hydrophilic at the edges of the particles. It was considered of interest to study the adsorption of lissolamine on clay, as this would contribute to our understanding of the method.

Changes in particle organization and pore-spaces with applied mechanical and hydraulic stresses were followed using TEM, SAXS mercury porosimetry and gas adsorption for two Na-smectites, Laponite and hectorite, with similar structural formulae but different particle sizes. The TEM images show that hectorite has particles larger and more anisotropic than those of Laponite. The particles order perpendicularly to the direction of axial mechanical stress and become disoriented under hydraulic stress. According to the SAXS results, Laponite is composed of 1 – 3 small layers and hectorite of more compact (10 – 80 layers) particles. In Laponite, mechanical stress strongly reduces the amount of macropores but does not affect micropores and mesopores; hydraulic stress increases the macropores. In hectorite, the pore-volume is lower than in Laponite. The different techniques used yield complementary results and show the considerable effect of layer dimension on the behaviour and microtexture parameters of smectite submitted to hydromechanical stresses.

Molecular dynamics simulations of different defective kaolinites under tension were performed to reveal the effects of defect location, type, density and temperature on their mechanical properties. Four types of defective kaolinite with Si vacancies were constructed. Based on the atomic-scale deformation and failure processes of defective kaolinite and its stress–strain curves, the Young's moduli and tensile strengths in three crystal directions were obtained and compared with the existing theoretical values from the literature. The defect location at each layer does not affect the mechanical properties of kaolinite and the cracks initiated at the defective sites. The atom density of each model was calculated in order to investigate the defect-type effect on the mechanical properties of kaolinite. The simulation results also showed that kaolinite exhibits brittle failure behaviour and the mechanical properties degrade significantly with increasing defect density and temperature. The influence of temperature on the mechanical properties of defective kaolinite is discussed in detail.

Fully exchanged Ag-clinoptilolite prepared at 100°C using 1 M solution of AgNO3 was studied. The initial sample (Beli Plast deposit, Bulgaria) was enriched in clinoptilolite by a sequence of treatments – crushing, sieving, sedimentation, and separation with heavy liquids to obtain a content of about 93 wt.% of clinoptilolite intergrown with opal-C. Opal-C was subsequently removed by chemical treatment. Maximum cation exchange was reached on the seventh day (4.86(4) Ag atoms per formula unit). Rietveld structural refinement was then carried out on the Ag-exchanged clinoptilolite, and three independent Ag sites were localated in the channels of the clinoptilolite structure. Seven water sites, coordinating the Ag sites, were located. Ag-clinoptilolite is, potentially, a promising low-cost antibacterial material.

The effects of acid and Al concentration, type of Al salt, treatment temperature and time of removal of Mg from sepiolite have been investigated, as has the use of modified sepiolite as an active fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) matrix. The samples were characterized by N2 adsorption and X-ray diffraction. Mg removal from sepiolite increased with increasing acid and Al ion concentration, treatment time and temperature. The temperature had the greatest impact on Mg removal. After acid and Al modification, 29% of the Mg was removed. When using the modified sepiolites as active matrices in FCC catalysts, the specific surface area, pore volume and mesoporous pore volume of the catalysts increased and they exhibited excellent performance in resisting the effects of heavy-metals as a result of the introduction of Mg oxide from the modified sepiolite.

The clay mineralogy of a sequence of 36 andesitic tephra and associated paleosols dating from 320 to > 100,000 years BP has been studied using XRD, IR, DTA and TEM techniques. The mineralogy and weathering sequence is compared with that of rhyolitic tephra of central North Island, New Zealand.

Phosphorites occur throughout the Negev, southern Israel, within the upper part of the Mishash Formation of Late Campanian age. These phosphorites are part of the Upper Cretaceous-Eocene Tethys phosphatic province. Two units can be differentiated in the Mishash Formation: a lower chert unit and an upper phosphatic unit (Nathan et al., 1979). In the upper unit, rich, economic phosphorite beds with more than 25% P2O5 alternate with chert beds and so-called ‘sterile intercalations’ which contain about 15% P2O5.

Clinoptilohte (Mumpton, 1960), a zeolite of the heulandite-clinoptilolite family, was identified from XRD patterns of air-dried and heated samples of the clay fraction from the insoluble residue (1-20% of the rock) of selected phosphatic samples from the Hor Hahar field, Negev, southern Israel. Clinoptilohte occurred mainly in the ‘sterile intercalations’. Inasmuch as clinoptilohte has not been identified in older formations in the Negev, it was presumed to be authigenic in the Mishash Formation.

Different types of dioctahedral smectites (nontronite, beidellite, montmorillonite) were investigated by X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) and Fourier transmission infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Starting with the chemical composition of the octahedral sheet, the occupancies within the octahedral sheet were adjusted by computer simulations to fit the occupancies derived from FTIR. For both cis-and trans-vacant smectites the AlAl and FeFe pairs are mainly randomly distributed but seem to be aligned along OH-bonded directions. Relative to the chemical composition, AlFe pairs are enriched in cis-vacant smectites and depleted in nontronites. This behaviour can be explained by the necessity to dehydrate and hydrolyse cations when they become incorporated into the structure during crystal growth. The first and second hydrolysis steps are necessary for incorporating cations in trans-vacant smectites, whereas only the first hydrolysis step is necessary for cis-vacant smectites. The corresponding difference in energy may explain why mostly cis-vacant smectites occur in low-temperature environments.

The optical properties of oriented montmorillonite aggregates were measured in both non-complexing and complexing media. The changes observed lead to the following conclusions. Preparing oriented aggregates of clays for optical examination requires considerable care to avoid spurious orientation effects. In determining the optical constants of montmorillonite aggregates the medium must wet and enter the aggregate readily and displace the air, particularly from the smaller pores, otherwise large form birefringence effects of uncertain magnitude will occur. A suitable medium is likely to be one that complexes montmorillonite. The complex it forms must have relatively isotropic interlamellar layers and this is more likely with isodimensional molecules. Consideration of complexes with simple compounds suggests that the intrinsic birefringence of aggregates is overestimated by conventional techniques.

Forming complexes with aromatic compounds usually results in the birefringence of the aggregate being essentially determined by the orientation and anisotropy of the intercalated molecules.

Volume resistivities of various homoionic montmorillonite films and their polyacrylonitrile (PAN) complexes were determined with a high-resistance meter. It was found that: (i) electrical conductivities of the homoionic montmorillonite films decreased in the order: Li- > Na- > K- > Mg- > Ca- > Sr- > Ba-montmorillonite, (ii) conductivities of the PAN-complex films varied with the amount of polymer present in the interlaminar space, and (iii) heating the PAN-complex films for 12 h at 150°C generally resulted in an increase in conductivity due to carbonization of the polymer.

The distribution of 2:1-2:2 intergrade clays has been investigated in some podzolized soils from Norway. In some of the profiles the intergrade clay mineral appears to be concentrated in the A2 horizon; in others, where smectite is predominant in the surface horizon, the maximum accumulation of the intergrade is observed in the B2 horizon. Smectite and vermiculite have been found to be the precursors of the intergrades of the A2 and B2 horizons respectively. A possible explanation to account for the observed variable pattern of occurrence of intergrades in soils is suggested.
