GENETIC SELECTION FOR AND EVALUATION OF NONDIAPAUSE LINES OF PREDATORY MIDGE, APHIDOLETES APHIDIMYZA (RONDANI) (DIPTERA: CECIDOMYIIDAE)

Abstract

Four lines of Aphidoletes aphidimyza (Rond.) were selected for nondiapause (one for 50 generations) under L:D 8:16 and 21 ± 1°C. In three selected lines, diapause incidence dropped rapidly in the first four or five generations, with means of 3–11% thereafter. There was no clear response to selection in the fourth line. Neither morphology nor sex ratio was affected by nondiapause selection in any lines, nor was fecundity affected in the longest-reared line. Reciprocal crosses indicated that the diapause trait was dominant; the effect of relaxing selection pressure was a gradual increase in diapause incidence after eight generations. There was a correlation between increased diapause incidence and slower development in selected lines. Diapause larvae took longer to develop than nondiapause larvae from the same line. Selection for nondiapause under L:D 8:16 with fluctuating thermoperiods was unsuccessful.

Résumé

On a sélectionné quatre lignées d’Aphidoletes aphidimyza pour l’absence de diapause sous L : D 8 : 16 à 21,1°C (dont l’une pour 50 générations). Dans trois des lignées, l’incidence de diapause a diminué rapidement durant les quatre ou cinq premières générations, avec une moyenne de 3 à 11% par la suite. La quatrième lignée n’a pas réagi de façon évidente à la sélection. La morphologie et le ratio des sexes n’ont pas été affectés par la sélection contre la diapause dans aucune lignée, et la fécondité ne l’a pas été dans la lignée maintenue le plus longtemps. Des croisements réciproques ont indiqué que le caractère diapausant est dominant; un relâchement de la sélection a amené un accroissement de l’incidence de diapause après huit générations. On a observé une corrélation entre l’accroissement de l’incidence de diapause et le ralentissement du développement dans les lignées sélectionnées. Les larves diapausantes ont montré un développement allongé par rapport aux larves non-diapausantes de la même lignée. La sélection contre la diapause sous L : D 8 : 16 avec thermopériodes fluctuantes n’a produit aucun résultat.
