Summary
No one could ever say of Poland what Metternich did of Italy, that it was a 'geographical expression’. The Polanie (people of the fields) founded Poland as a distinct political entity pegged out on the great North European plain. Climb to the top of the modest rock outcrop at Mount Sorrel in Leicestershire and look east - there is nothing higher between there and the Ural mountains. On that plain there is much to be gained and lost. Not only Polish, but Russian and Prussian history attest to that. Poland today has a position and shape closer to those of its beginnings than any since the mid-fourteenth century. Glance at a series of maps and see what sprang into life as a relatively large yet ethnically uniform state and became a multi-ethnic ‘Commonwealth’ - an empire in fact, which at its zenith extended two thousand miles along the north-west to south-east line from the Baltic to the hinterlands of the Black Sea. Witness the Central Asian rampages in Europe during the thirteenth century for the crowning proofs of grand movement on the plains. Polities so situated as to face the prospects of attacks from powerful enemies out of the wide open spaces were absolutely obliged to engage in the age-old imperialist practice of attack by annexation as the best form of defence. Due north of the basic Polish homeland, the Baltic precluded expansion. Defence against the Swedes and various brands of Germans had to begin at its shores. To the west, the plains were at the very outset heavily invested by those in the orbit of the Holy Roman Empire and its effective regional successors. In the south, maximal Jagiellonian limits included Bohemia, Hungary and Moldavia besides the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but the norm was for Poland to be north of the Bohemian and Carpathian ranges. And Moldavia (until detached by Ottoman expansion) represented the only sustained ‘deep south’ Polish power thrust outside the Ukraine. The great frontiers were, of course, those of the east, north-east and south-east. There lay the vast opportunity, the greatest necessity and the direst dangers.
