Summary
In religiously diverse countries, polls repeatedly demonstrate that a majority of adults affirm that more than one religion may be “true” and even non-believers may find their way to eternal life in heaven. The questions frequently privilege Christian concerns for dogma and salvation, but the responses indicate a broad desire to interpret religious difference in ways that afford full dignity and equality to all people. Our working terminology for this perspective is “parity pluralism,” where parity denotes comparable merit—not sameness: multiple lifestances are deemed equally sufficient and their variety is beneficial. Chapter 4 explores the substantial discourse in Interreligious Studies that seeks to establish ethical, philosophical, and theological grounds for parity pluralism.
