Summary
On 4 August 1647 a number of Members and peers produced a Declaration or ‘engagement’ justifying their flight to the New Model army for protection during the Presbyterian-inspired counter-revolution at Westminster. There are three different lists of those involved, from LJ ix. 385, HMC Egmont, i. 440 and Rushworth, Hist. Collns. The variations are set out below. LJ also includes three peers who sat at other times in the 1640-60 Commons: William Cecil, earl of Salisbury, Henry Grey, earl of Kent and Edward Howard, Lord Howard of Escrick. HMC Egmont also includes Members serving as ‘commissioners with the army, who (for that cause) signed not the engagement’: Thomas Povey (‘denied it’), Philip Skippon, Sir Henry Vane II, Robert Scawen, William White, Sir Thomas Widdrington.
