NE ME (LECTOR optime) existimes vel famae desiderio (quo sane non conficior) vel praemii invitatum et illectum spe, (quod nunquam concupivi) ad scribendum accessisse. Enimvero non sum ita mentis inops, ita omnis consilii egenus, ut in hac tanta mea vel eruditionis, vel ingenii mediocritate, vel huius perversissimi seculi maledicendi libidine (nam quae tempora inimica magis virtuti?) ullam aut laudem, aut lucrum exspectem. Porro autem cum animo ob eas vitae acerbitates atque aerumnas quas in me simul uno eodemque tempore quasi conflaverat atque profuderat fortuna incredibiliter angerer: omnesque mihi undique venti reflavissent, quo aspirare mens mea tantis malorum montibus circumclusa potuerit certe non reperio.

Quid enim mea intererat, qui qualesve fuerint Norvicenses, unde orti, quibus primum urbs auspiciis nata, quibus deinceps aucta, quos curia Praetores, quos habuerit Ecclesia Pontifices?
