Summary
Good Morning, Ester (Morning, Day 10)
I froze when I read the newspapers this morning. The plot is much deeper than I suspected. I don't know exactly what is going on but I do know that there are people out there plotting against me in a big way. I'm talking about the murder of Cezmi Kenan. The newspapers have finally got round to writing about it, and what a piece they turned out. This is what the third page of İkdam newspaper wrote:
A mysterious murder in Langa! Retired Army Captain Cezmi Kenan, who it transpires had been living alone, has been found dead in his home, the victim of a stabbing… After searching the premises, the police found an extensive haul of ammunition in the dry well in his garden. It is still unknown why there was such a cache of rifles, pistols and hand grenades stored on the premises. Noting that the victim was formerly a member of the İttihat ve Terraki movement, the Committee for Union and Progress, the authorities suspect that the arms may have been intended for use in an operation with a political aspect. The investigating authorities have also announced that they have identified photographs of the victim with Kara Kemal, one of the former leaders of the CUP, and that the murder may be linked to the attempted assassination of the President in the city of Izmir. As one of the suspects in the Izmir case, Kara Kemal committed suicide in the house in which he was hiding in July of last year when he realised he was about to be captured and detained.
Cumhuriyet and Vakit gave similar accounts of Captain Cezmi's death. Clearly the reports had been written by the same person and then passed on to the press. There was nothing surprising or untoward about that. We used to do the same when we were in the Teşkilat-i Mahsusa. What was astonishing was a marked man like me not being noticed in such an important murder investigation. If one was to go along with the newspapers’ reports, I had long since been arrested and questioned. And yet the two policemen that turned up yesterday barely even saw me as a suspect! So what were they up to? Well, what else could it be but Mehmed Esad trying to gain some time?
