TAKING THE AFOREMENTIONED characteristics of BetäƎsraʾel monasticism into account, we can now proceed todiscuss the complexes built to serve this unique monastic movement. We willbegin with a general overview of monastic life and architecture in Ethiopia,which will serve as a frame of reference for an examination of BetäƎsraʾel monastic architecture.
