Summary
PREFACE
This appendix is a working document to accompany the text and to assist future study. It includes letters directed to the Humiliati, others which refer to them and in one case (number 1) a letter the existence of which is known only because it is referred to in a later document. Only brief summaries are given, in particular when a letter is discussed in detail above.
References are given to manuscripts, principal published editions, catalogues (regests) and, on one or two occasions, to translations. Citations are given only where these provide substantial information about the document. Similarly, differences between manuscript and published editions are noted only if they substantially change the meaning of the letter or add details of interest.
An asterisk * before the number indicates non-papal documents which are not listed with an incipit in order to avoid confusion with papal correspondence. Some letters of the archdeacons of Monza are included as they enjoyed quasi-episcopal status; a decision by the council of experts in Florence illustrating the response to a papal letter is also inserted (*119).
Finally, a distinction is made between extant originals sent to the recipients and Vatican Register copies which may often have been transcribed into the Register some time after the letter was sent and on the basis of minute rather than the full text. Differences are very minor, but the wording of an original is always adopted.
