Summary
Susan E. Babbit passed away at 3 a.m. on the 18 September 2021, in Ottawa, Canada. To those who got to know her well, she was a great example of the benefits of practising vipassana meditation. She maintained a peaceful demeanour in spite of the vicissitudes of life.
In her own words (from her obituary):
Her achievement was to lose some ignorance in 68 years on the planet. A 28-year career teaching philosophy followed 9 years in the 70's as a penniless, confused, self-absorbed hippy. But the latter explains the former. However, she especially valued work after retirement, in the ancient scientific philosophy of early (Theravada) Buddhism. She thanks colleagues at Queen's University, a wonderful family, sacrificial friends who stepped up during cancer, ingenious oncologists at Princess Margaret Hospital, beloved friends in Cuba who taught her for 28 years, special friends elsewhere, and anyone who took seriously ideas gained from Cuba and Vipassana, two areas of philosophy that were, in the end, most useful.
